oinoom··on Altman tells staff OpenAI is open to slowing AI development
You know… I agree. I haven’t found it to be as great as reported.
oinoom··on Altman tells staff OpenAI is open to slowing AI development
I’m curious why you use this language of “appears to match or even beat”, seemed pretty clear from the benchmarks that it’s well ahead of Fable. Do you doubt the reporting?
oinoom··on On the Navier–Stokes Millennium Prize Problem
its important to read it anyway because there have been and will continue to be errors in the construction of the proof software itself. which leads ai and humans alike to prove things that arent true

Losing that amount of money would be very uncharacteristic of wsb
oinoom··on How I feel about AI
The author having mistral review the seven paragraphs in their short article is wild to me. It’s not like it’s a doctoral thesis

oinoom··on GPU World
The premise of the story is silly. If AI gets cheaper and faster, then it certainly will get smarter (just not in the raw sense) as harnesses, tool access, memory, etc. improve. You can’t hold intelligence as a fixed variable but then imply other aspects of it improve
oinoom··on Ask HN: Any blogs/personal notes from game devs who self-published a game?
Not written form but ThinMatrix on youtube is a delightful watch [1]

What is a humanist font?

oinoom··on Ask HN: I've quit six systems for tracking my illness. What works?
I make an app called Reflect [1] which is geared towards tracking these kinds of things. Admittedly, sticking with the habit and forming it in the first place can be hard. If you’re interested in talking about it, let me know! We have a discord that we link to in the app and that’s the fastest way to get a hold of me.

oinoom··on Auto-research with codex: How I achieved a 232x Faster Kernel
this is the first time ive heard of beam search. i would have reached for a genetic algorithm of some sort, although it seems like some stochastic versions of beam search exist to avoid local minima. i wonder if there are any good frameworks for building these that agents can construct and use.

> I mean, installing packages and type checking can surely be slow. But, at least in my career, I've never seen a galactic blow-up.

Have you ever tried building an iOS app? The compiler gives up after a sufficient time because typechecking can be so slow

oinoom··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (August 2026)
Reflect [1], it’s a local-first privacy focused self tracking and data analysis app where you can set goals and run self experiments

You also don’t need it to be trained on it specifically, just give it some docs or links to docs or source code as reference

very clean and well done!

> we don’t know what to do, so we’re going to throw spaghetti at the wall

My opinion is that the money is in the verticals as the models and harnesses built around them become commodities. Specializing in a vertical, especially where hardware is involved, creates a buffer between companies and the frontier labs. The frontier labs are spreading themselves thin trying to capture verticals like finance or legal but aren’t narrow enough to be as competitive as a company that is going for a more targeted approach.

oinoom··on Twenty One Zero-Days in FFmpeg
Funny, John Carmack was just admiring the creator of ffmpeg the other day for being a better programmer. https://x.com/id_aa_carmack/status/2064095424420487226?s=46
oinoom··on Textbooks Should Be Free
I read this book cover to cover after purchasing it with money, despite it being free online, and loved it. I think it’s pretty clear that the author was in a position where they could afford to put this out there for free. But not everyone is and I think people should be compensated for their time and efforts if that’s what they want.

what was the prompt for this, did you use a CAD/threejs skill or grab a model from somewhere?
oinoom··on A Man Who Reads Books for a Living
I started to find this article interesting but every time I tapped “x” on an ad to dismiss it, no more than five seconds later, the same ad would appear at the bottom and distract me. Over and over.
oinoom··on Agentic Mfw
I’m getting some serious Frank Grimes vibes here [1]. I think the slop is causing people to lose their minds because the cognitive dissonance they have seeing it proliferate while hating it so much.

oinoom··on Ask HN: How much AI is in your writing?
I’ve used AI to help me understand and build technical solutions but I draw the line at writing about it. If I can’t put it into my own words, I don’t understand it enough to share it with others. I don’t even use AI to spell check or suggest ways to organize my writing.
oinoom··on Aether: High-performance, formally-verified storage engine written in Rust
The part that’s not clear to me is, does the spec actually align with what’s been implemented, or has the spec only been formally verified. I think the risk with vibe coding this sort of thing is that claude assures you the rust code implements the spec when it doesn’t
