Ok, are you leaving or are you staying?

ohyeshedid··on Ask HN: Twilio suspended account because someone sent us a fraud text
...or the complaints that caused the account suspension didn't come from Twilio. More than likely, the employee cell carrier noticed the spam and sent an automated complaint to Twilio, and then Twilio acted.

That doesn't excuse poor support, and the lack of resolution, but it changes a lot of the assumed processes.

ohyeshedid··on How did LastPass master passwords get compromised?
Your example would've caused a much larger response, no? By most accounts, it didn't trigger for most users, so a simple flub like that should've triggered on more accounts.

I'm viewing this through the lens of multiple days of differing social groups poking at this, and the crowdsourced information that's yielded.

> ...shown wrong, you continue to spread misinformation.

You haven't shown anything wrong: neither of us know what actually happened. nor am I spreading misinformation, nor making statements as to what happened; I'm questioning it. Is there some reason you're so accusatory?

> Also, you are referring to LP functionality which to my knowledge doesn't even exist, and when asked you say you don't know the software being discussed.

[1]. I haven't touched LP in, ehhh, 10ish years, and it was a feature even back then.

[1]: https://support.logmeininc.com/lastpass/help/lastpass-accoun...

ohyeshedid··on How did LastPass master passwords get compromised?
I don't have a link handy, nor currently familiar with LP's site or extensions:

The part of the site that shows the recent connections to your account, with IP's. People were sharing those IP's and thoughts in the linked thread.

That data came from somewhere; if it's related to this bug then this bug is also pushing incorrect data into other parts of the service. It's also entirely possible that it wasn't a bug, and instead a security issue, and that data is correct, and they're bending words to play it off as just a bug.

I can understand a bug triggering a warning system, but when it's also presenting related data in the account security logs; it's either a complicated bug or there's more to the story.

ohyeshedid··on How did LastPass master passwords get compromised?
I was referring to the IP's being shown to users.[1]

So then; Is the bug also responsible for pushing bad data to the users dashboards? If this is really a bug, it's a complicated one. I'd be curious if those IP's are still being shown on the users end.

ohyeshedid··on How did LastPass master passwords get compromised?
I'm curious how that balances with everyone sharing random IP's from attempted account access. Where did those addresses come from? Why are users seeing them? Did the bug they're talking about cause bad data to be pushed to users dashboards?

ohyeshedid··on Tell HN: You are not alone this Christmas
Not OP, but:

Ancient oak trees, with canopies the size of houses, gingerly cartwheeling down the street, until a wind shift sends it rolling through the neighbors(empty) house. Watching their entire lives evaporate into projectiles that peppered everything downwind.

Modern garage door being sucked out, thrown over the house, to impale itself into the house behind it, evaporating it a few seconds later.

Large trucks, turning side-over-side, like logs rolling down a hill.

A cast iron bench being launched like a rocket into a neighbors window, turning the contents of that room, window, frame, and window air conditioner into a debris field; something from with-which punched a hole through a stop sign.

The roof of my house being lifted 6-10 inches directly upward, rotated about 30 degrees, and slammed back down. Like a sonic boom went off 10ft over-head.

Front support column being blown through my living room window, glass embedding itself into the walls opposite.

The physics of your everyday environment radically and violently change, you see things that you can't see anywhere else. I was on a few drugs while everything was going on, and there's so much more, but none of that was what really messed me up.

I don't know if other people have ever seen something that their brain couldn't understand at all. Like all context does not exist, this is entirely new to human experience kinda thing:

My house had a big ditch behind it, then a set of train tracks that were about a foot lower than my land grade, then another big ditch, then a state park. A very large state park that was miles and miles of ancient oaks, swamps, etc.

I walked out behind my house when the storm cleared, and I froze because I couldn't understand what I was seeing: Imagine an eldritch-old forest, you see it everyday, and now where an impenetrable wall of wood was, is now white horizon. It had been flattened, or erased. My eyes were seeing the white horizon while my brain was struggling with my memory and anticipation. It's the most disassociated I've ever felt without advanced chemistry.

Sure, but OP wasn't pointing out they use NaCl/libsodium.

It doesn't align with their marketing terms: "Never have a data breach", "Core benefits: Zero Data Breaches", etc.

Promises like that, with liability waivers in the fine print, are always worthy of suspicion.

ohyeshedid··on ADSL works over wet string (2017)
From previous personal experience in building new plants, and expanding existing plants: Cost of deployment and slow roi are the primary drivers of stagnating local networks.

Complicated corporate accounting, carrier incumbency, and weak governments are the core causes. Carriers being publicly traded companies really screws up incentives to fix these problems. It seems to be mostly a binary decision at the top; more profit or better service?

Hey friend, some people learn about corrections the hard way, so it's not assumptions and appeals to authority, it's a lived experience.

The approval processes of any vendors come with product restrictions, which function as bans.

ohyeshedid··on The American prison system’s war on reading
Unqualified people fail upward, qualified people make mistakes, and some people are just crooked.

I wonder if the same folks banning books in prisons are the same folks that sell access licenses for trash pseudo-documentary tv shows in prison? You know the ones, they usually show you inmates using or trading dope or they'll show off some weapons. This is considered entertainment television programming.

I wouldn't be making appeals to others expertise without some skepticism, friend.

I don't know if using exports is anywhere near the industry totals.

According to NOAA, in regards to US totals[1]:

"Overall, the highest value U.S. commercial species were salmon ($688 million), crabs ($610 million), lobsters ($594 million), shrimp ($531 million), scallops ($512 million), and Alaska pollock ($413 million)."

ohyeshedid··on Cloudflare Pages goes full stack
Fwiw, consensus, in some circles, is that's a very limited offering and they like to entirely delete accounts after the trial if you don't respond to their sales/onboarding emails.

They may even continue to email you reminders about your trial expiring and tell you that you can still use all the free tier offerings, even though you can't log in anymore because the account is gone.

ohyeshedid··on Show HN: You.com, private search engine that summarizes the web – built for devs
You aren't communicating in good faith now, Dan. You're speaking through a communication framework, using conversational tactics. Those tools are wonderful when used to better ones own communication: be aware it becomes manipulation when used as a control on other's. This isn't confrontational, this is just direct and purposeful dialect.

Let's run this back, and this is the last time I'm engaging with you on this specific topic.

I said what I said, you responded that I broke the guidelines, and accused me of disrespect. Respect is a currency earned in grave experiences, to me. I understand you don't know that, but as a policy in this world: quickly questioning someones respect can be inflammatory. For clarity: Everything I say to you is with respect, care, and purpose.

I responded that it wasn't disrespectful, and voiced my disagreement.

You responded to that by cherry picking and scare-quoting collections of words, irrespective of the context of the entire comment, and flow of the conversation at the time.

That's against the spirit of HN: you already know this. The framework you're communicating through: seeking clarity, I don't understand, etc; entirely disingenuous when you actually know better. You violated the rules to make a point, while trying to tone police me, and coach me on how to communicate in a style you prefer.

Respectfully: "nobody knows who the fuck you are"

Absolute truth with levity, as a combined response to several posts by the OP repeatedly responding with incredulity that everyone wasn't happy to install an undisclosed extension while they advertised a search engine service on a website. It's an entirely obvious and honest response.

"<some gibberish about google evil here>"

Levity, brevity, and actually a small kindness. [1][2][3][4][5] Those are just the google related comments. To expound: that's childish circular logic, manipulative talking points, immature tribalism: gibberish is not out of bounds here. This isn't a garage project, this is a corporate venture with major backing; the second thread using other's names as social currency. Poor communication style: avoidant, defensive, while being deceptive: what about guidelines? Respect the house.

[1] https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=29168500 [2] https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=29167981 [3] https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=29169534 [4] https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=29168719 [5] https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=29166408

"you created this problem for yourself"

Follow the thread, I refuse to engage with you when you're choosing to ignore conversational flow. They created the undisclosed requirement, the requirement was the most mentioned complaint: they created this problem. That is not a slap, it's a valid observation, and an opportunity to adapt early. Which they have, despite some other questionable ongoing issues.

"the more you respond"

Read my last response, and follow the conversation, they reverted to repeating the same meaningless statements.

"this is some poorly thought out"

They marketed a search service hosted on a website, without disclosing the extension requirement: and further we sink into your missing context; it was user capture.

"you don't understand"

His job title is CEO; is it proper form to question a CEO about deployments, or do we live in world where people have domain expertise in specific fields? Again, you fired from the hip without paying attention to context. Your bias, as I pointed out originally, intellectual dishonesty, and not in the spirit of HN.

If I hadn't made it clear, I'm taking the ding either way. It's your house, but at some point you need to ask yourself if your tao of communication became the site guidelines over time.

Then the actual major issue, that you refuse to acknowledge or engage on: predatory marketing and dark patterns in Show submissions, and your inaction in regards to them. This topic is going to come up again, as it predates this thread. This is a community concern.

Best interpretation is just a mistake, fully respective of workload and personal life. That's great, maybe then you and the community can have a conversation about better processes and ways for us to respond and we can build a solution together. Perfect is an enemy of good just as good enough is an enemy of better. Maintain the house respect.

The only alternative is you're complicit, and intellectually honest reasoning: company policy, employment requirements, etc. This is one of those binary things; the shades of grey begin after the fork.

Disambiguate intent: agreed; now, please. You mentioned damage, and here we are. We can disagree about the tree, and let it be, but I'm also talking about the seemingly untended fire in the forest.

Like I said, I respect the house, I respect the mission, I respect you and the work you do. You quote the show guidelines, they broke the show guidelines: you quote the house guidelines, you break the site guidelines; practice what you proselytize. Do as I say, not as I do is near the peak of intellectual dishonesty. Securing the flock is a shepherds first job responsibility.
