oevi··on A writer fabricated a series of stories for Atlas Obscura
There was a similar scandal surrounding German news magazine „Der Spiegel“ with at least 14 articles fabricated: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Claas_Relotius
oevi··on The XML spec is 25 years old today
XSLT 3.0 allows streaming for large XML files. See e.g. https://www.saxonica.com/html/documentation10/sourcedocs/str...
oevi··on Voith Schneider Propeller
The German Wikipedia article has some very nice animations to demonstrate the principle: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voith-Schneider-Antrieb
oevi··on iPhone 12 Models Won't Include Charger in Box, Power Adapter Sold Separately
The article says a Lightning to USB-C cable will still be included. So you can use any USB-C charger which can delivery the necessary power (as with the iPhone 11).
oevi··on Animating URLs with JavaScript and Emojis
This got me thinking about some standardized control elements websites could put in the address / menu bar.

Something like media controls, progress bars or even consent banners. This way they would have an unified appearance and could be user scriptable.

oevi··on Why was it so hard to take a picture of a black hole?
A very good explanation on what we are looking at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zUyH3XhpLTo
oevi··on Zero-shot transfer across 93 languages
In the field of Technical Writing there are whole books written on how to write for human and machine translation. Main takeaway: consistency and unambiguity.

Controlled languages try to solve this with constraints. There is quite a bit of researcha round this topic: https://scholar.google.de/scholar?q=controlled+language+tran...

oevi··on “Diagram of All Space and Time” by Carl Sagan (1960s?)
"The X axis represents time [...] and the Y axis represents scale" - Isn't it the other way round?
oevi··on Show HN: A mobile-friendly, web-based, countries of the world game
Another good "countries of the world game" which is more based on maps is: http://click-that-hood.com/

Especially the Africa variant: http://www.youdontknowafrica.com/

oevi··on Amazon in Running to Acquire Landmark Movie Chain
A bit like Daimler-Benz between 1985-95 when they tried to get into aerospace and electronics under CEO Edzard Reuter, which failed miserably and cost the company around 25 Billion dollars. Some called it the biggest destruction of capital in Germany in peacetime
oevi··on “Pinterest needs to be removed from Google IMO”
Because it implies an association with the W3C
oevi··on Most images of black holes are illustrations. Here’s what our telescopes capture
Black holes are an excellent example for so called "cognitive metaphors".

Because we found no better analogy, we named them "holes" despite the fact that they are basically the opposite: an object with enormous mass.

This influences our thinking and our language when we discuss problems concerning black holes. We talk about "inside the black hole", "light cannot escape the black hole" or "spitting things out of the black hole".

I think it is really interesting how these cognitive metaphors can sometime limit our ability to think about a problem, because they often restrict the properties of the described thing to the properties of the analogy.

oevi··on How Dropbox handles downgrades
It is also interesting how the handle forced downgrades. I just lost some GBs from previous promotions (like Dropbox Campus Cup) and are now stuck with the following situation:

- all files are still there, downloads are possible

- they disabled syncing between devices and sharing

- in case of upgrading to a paid plan I can continue as before

oevi··on Taiwan ban single-use plastic straws, plastic bags, disposable utensils by 2030
Here is a suprisingly comprehensive list of countries which have programs to reduce plastic bags: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phase-out_of_lightweight_plast...
oevi··on Show HN: Web scraping page analyzer
Nice work! It seems that it only supports microdata and not RDFa at the moment?
oevi··on SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy successfully launches
Here they are in full resolution: https://www.flickr.com/photos/spacex/with/25254688767/
oevi··on Germany vs. Elsevier: universities win temporary free journal access
another one still working is their .hk domain.
oevi··on Documenting the Web together
There is also mdn.io which can be used as shortcut in every browser like this (for a search for 'await'): http://mdn.io/await
oevi··on Tesla Model 3 First Drive Review
Or the Renault Twingo for an even more minimalistic approach:

http://i.auto-bild.de/ir_img/1/1/3/2/4/4/5/Renault-Twingo-72...

oevi··on The Rise and Fall of Yik Yak
There is Jodel [0] which is quite popular among students in Germany. It has strict guidelines [1] which try exactly this.

oevi··on Ask HN: How can I do social good through programming?
Teach coding to children and those who want to learn it.
oevi··on Ask HN: Should I Sign an NDA??
Not OP, but also in software consulting. Working with software means in most cases working with customer data, which is sensible by nature (either because it contains some kind of knowledge or employee details).
oevi··on Unpaired Image-to-Image Translation using Cycle-Consistent Adversarial Networks
Because this is B2B business and usually done by specialized software companies. These companies do not publish or open source their solutions because it is either against their own or their customer's interest.

Examples are the whole Predictive Maintenance sector, the medical sector (Computer Aided Diagnosis) or insurance companies which use NN to for all kind of analyses.

oevi··on Show HN: Web Bluetooth
This talk revolves around exactly this question: https://www.destroyallsoftware.com/talks/the-birth-and-death...

You might enjoy watching it.

oevi··on Ask HN: Who is firing?
Gameforge?
oevi··on Concorde
Actually, it's not that much of a deal. You will barely notice it. The whole transrapid ride from/to the airport is a bit.. underwhelming.

For me, Hong Kong and especially its skyline was much more futuristic and fascinating. If you've never been there, go for it!

oevi··on Nintendo Switch – New Video Game System [video]
My girlfriend instinctively used the TV remote to control the video playback on the PS4, and to my surprise it worked. It's a Sony TV and I can even control the PS home menu.
oevi··on Tesla envy grips Germany’s giants
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hidden_champions#List_of_selec...
oevi··on Ask HN: What are the cool life hacks for Developer?
Someone on HN mentioned (or even built) http://mdn.io for that, so you can just type mdn.io/array into the address bar and it takes you straight to the right JS docs page.

Bonus: works in every browser or environment.

It was from 1900 - 1936:
