oceanghost··on Cooking food in your home and selling it is legal in Cali. with a license
Oh I'm going to need you to elaborate on that.
oceanghost··on Cooking food in your home and selling it is legal in Cali. with a license
Well, the problem is... food safety is a medical nightmare when safety practices aren't observed.

As a personal note, the sickest I have ever been in my life was from food poisoning. The details are horrific, but imagine 3 days of violent diarrhea while at the same time throwing up. I couldn't even hold down water. My arms looked like, its hard to explain... the skin was draped over them. You could see every sinue of the musculature like I was a body builder, except I was a fat 30 year old. I went to the hospital and took 4 liters of saline.

All I did to earn that punishment was eat a few slices of pizza that had been left out too long.

If you please, the saga of the "pink sauce", which is the exemplar of why food safety has to be regulated:

My ex was a nurse... she did home visits. A patient had a life threatening injury. She understood the situation, stabilized him and got him to a hospital. The company awarded her a $5 gift card.

I would argue $5 is worth than nothing.

oceanghost··on Blacklist is not a racist word
That's all very interesting but I don't think it has anything to do with if the phrase "master" is racist.

A quick search reveals the following English idioms:

master master plan master of ceremonies master key master class master baker master of arts baggage master past master grand master zen master puppet master master of fine arts master of science master sergeant chess master old master master builder master bedroom harbor master master of literature master copy master cylinder master at arms master of library science sailing master master race question master master of arts in library science master hand master file master of divinity master of theology master mason master of architecture master of arts in teaching master of education property master master switch drill master master lease master in business master of the rolls master cast ballet master master in public affairs master mechanic master stroke master vibrator master chief petty officer master of laws riding master harbour master job master rattlesnake master assay master master notes master of science in engineering master and servant wreck master dance master games master kong the master master plans bus master master in business administration master mind master tape senior master sergeant station master the master master slave mint master special master wagon master forage master jack of all trades and master of none master in chancery master keys quarter master three master two master be own master been own master dock master dutch master fencing master master electrician master of the horse writing master bush master corrected master cast gang master is own master master classes master gland master lode master switches master tap master two step exercise test

oceanghost··on Blacklist is not a racist word
What's dumb about that is, I'm sure it refers to the definition of master as:

adjective main; principal. "the apartment's master bathroom has a free-standing oval bathtub"

oceanghost··on Sad Trek – How an exhausted liberalism killed sci-fi’s sunniest franchise
This article get Star Trek, barely right.

First of all, they're based on the Horatio Hornblower novels-- they're basically those in space.

Second of all, Star Trek, the core before it lost its way (Enterprise and anything after it) is about aging. Either intentionally or unintentionally.

TOS, and TNG, both have a space alien telling humanity to stay home. In "The Cage" which is literally called The Cage (metaphor for not advancing), the telepathic aliens warn humanity about the dangers of space, while sheltering (parenting) a disfigured human woman. In my theory, this is the adolescent humanity.

In TNG, literally, a race called the Q warns humanity to stay home, we defy him and suffer through our teenage years straining against a well meaning but no longer welcome parental figure.

DS9 and Voyager, to me doubly so since they ran concurrently, are about middle to late age. DS9 a younger middle age where you're still in your prime but you have children now you have to think about and there are hard decisions to be made.

Voyager, because it starts with literally, "The Caretaker" dying (parents) and deals mostly with spirituality and ethics, and in my theory is placed later in life.

*This is my theory and my theory alone. I will take all shit :-)

So what's wrong with the new Star Trek? It's not liberalism, it's not lack of liberalism it's the same thing wrong with Star Wars and a lot of other entertainment out there-- its not GOOD.

The entertainment industry has lost and idea of subtlety or complexity. If TNG offered me loving viewpoints that were beyond their time ad now and then preachy (the trans episode for instance--where Riker falls for an alien who doesn't have a clear sex)... things like Discovery and Brave New Worlds just bludgeon you with bullshit, and then when you don't like the mess they're serving you-- they blame you for that.

I'd point to the Captain America debacle as the exemplar of this-- Brie Larson tells everyone the movie is for little girls (this was a deeply narcissistic, cynical and most of all dishonest viewpoint) and literally said she didn't care what 40 year old men thought about her movie and it "wasn't for them." Then she demonizes the same demographic for not showing up to see the movie she told them not to see.

We're in a weird growing-pains stages of society. I am a card carrying, Bernie Sanders progressive, and I can't tolerate most of this bullshit.

oceanghost··on Purdue Starts Comprehensive Semiconductor Degree Programs in U.S.
This tracks for me.

I worked for a supplier for AMAT/Intel/Samsung etc. and was basically on-call 24/7. I had to carry two laptops with me at all times (my personal one and a work one).

I didn't care because I was young, and well compensated, but they decided that they'd cut my pay by a third by converting me to a salaried employee. The unpaid overtime (previously paid as a contractor) lost its luster quickly. Once I realized I was subsidizing bad management because I was filling the gaps left by often intentional shortcuts taken-- for free, I bailed. That took... two months I think.

oceanghost··on China 'must seize TSMC' if the US were to impose sanctions
I worked in a clean room for a couple of years-- you are correct that any contamination could cost months of cleaning. Possibly even losing environmental control of the facility. A lot of people don't realize clean rooms have temperatures/humidity factors that must be maintained.

That being said I'm sure the real risk is the Chinese capturing the machines-- it is acknowledged they are about 15 years behind the state of the art.

oceanghost··on Court upholds $573k penalty against CA homeowner who fixed cars in backyard
Right? If you've never lived on a farm you don't know what rats are.

The wort thing is, if you can kill the rats in your barn, you create a power vacuum for the rats around you to invade.

It's a maddening problem.

oceanghost··on Court upholds $573k penalty against CA homeowner who fixed cars in backyard
I agree over-regulation sucks but let me give you a counter example.

A friend of mine who was very poor (single mother of 3, blah blah blah, lots of bad choices mixed in there). She took her broken car to a local "good guy" who ran a repair shop out of his house. He was a veteran, single father which he traded on heavily-- but he had no idea what he was doing. He broke every law there was, from waste disposal to licensing to code/zoning to required practices for mechanics (such as written estimates).

So my friend hasn't had her car for months and this person can't fix it, and he is running advertisements on craigslist to sell it. I call him up and say, "You've failed to fix the car, whats your time worth on this one?" He hems and haws, saying he's put thousands into it (and hasn't fixed the problem). I tell him "not my concern, I'll fix the car myself, what do you want?"

He then threatened me mentioning that he was an ex-marine. I told him I didn't care, that I would be presenting all of this to the police in the morning and having him arrested for conversion if at all possible. His tune suddenly changed, and $80 would be acceptable for services. He immediately called my friend who owned the car and tried to extort her for a few hundred dollars.

I eventually got the car, I recognized the symptoms immediately-- bad crank shaft sensor-- keep in mind, I'm a software engineer. I took it to a trusted shop and the whole thing was resolved or $250 and in 4 hours. He'd been trying to diagnose it for 3 months. Replacing parts in the car because he didn't know wtf he was doing, and then trying to charge the customer for his ignorance, and trying to extort them, and trying to defraud them.

I turned him in to every agency in California that enforces these things, and he was forced to at least obey the law, which meant getting a shop.

I'd love to say this all ended up well, but the antagonist in the story abruptly died. The poor SOB had a heart attack and that was that. I send a few hundred bucks a year to his kids. The real victims in all of this.

Stories like this are why we have regulations.

oceanghost··on Ask HN: How to Deal with ADHD?
Hi, I have ADHD. I went to a doctor for a long time for it and I ended up on this treadmill where I was constantly taking higher doses of meds and layering meds on top of each other to get the same "effect." I was on vivance and then adderall, and every few months the doctor was stepping up my dose of these.

I got a lot of relief from Modafinil, and I think its the best drug for ADHD. Any stimulant will develop a tolerance. Its just a fact of life. I've had good results mixing Modalert and Pseudoephedrine. Pseudoephedrine is cheap, and effective. The molecule contains a portion of the amphetamine structure. If you choose to go the drug route. Caffeine also works wonders, but I personally find in my middle age I can't tolerate large doses anymore (I get acid reflux and anxiety at moderate doses).

But, now I have to give you the hard truth. Drugs can help you in the short term, but they're no cure, and they put the wrong idea in your head-- that drugs can fix you.

You have to take control of your mind. You can look for relief from drugs but largely that will result in an addiction to stimulants. I think the only viable treatment is self discipline and meditation and that won't be perfect. Please feel free to discount this, but I believe our minds have an "interior" which can be explored.

oceanghost··on Parents sue Apple over AirPods, alleging Amber Alert damaged son’s hearing
That was the conclusion I came to. The concept of Amber Alerts, emergency alerts, is fine, but the devil is in the details.

And that devil as you have said is-- context. If my velocity is over 5 mph, perhaps I don't need the loudest sound there ever was? :)

oceanghost··on Parents sue Apple over AirPods, alleging Amber Alert damaged son’s hearing
I had a nearly disastrous event with the Amber Alerts on the iPhone--

a few years back, I was traveling at 70mph down the 55, heavy traffic, iPhone paired via bluetooth to my car. I was listening to music I think at a low volume.

Then, a sound as loud as an earthquake shook the car. I was beyond terrified. I jerked the steering wheel from the startle reflex and very nearly hit the divider.

It was of course, an Amber Alert, and an irresponsible one at that. I say that because it was for a county 300 miles north of where I was.

I don't know if it is still this way-- but the Amber Alerts used to play at full volume no matter what the phones settings are.

I am unsure of the wisdom of potentially startling every human being within a few hundred miles, at basically the same time.

oceanghost··on New York rolling out noise law, listening tech for souped-up speedsters
Of course its a joke. It's a reference to a "The Simpsons" episode where the comically evil "Mr Burns" jokes that he wants to murder someone for some mundane reason. I can't find the scene on youtube.
oceanghost··on New York rolling out noise law, listening tech for souped-up speedsters
I lived for a few years in "Orange, California". Every night around 11pm the loudest motorcycle you could imagine would come by.

I could handle the noise, but when the wife and I had a kiddo who was a light sleeper-- our lives were hell for a 18 months or so.

Imagine, having a newborn and a motorcycle drive by emitting 110db of noise against her windows 5 nights a week, for a year.

If I had murdered this person I would have been, "the bad guy."

oceanghost··on Ask HN: How did my brain get me home during blackout?
Medically there are two separate phenomena here.

You may have "passed out" -- which is a loss of consciousness.

At some point you recovered from being passed out (if you were-- we can't trust your memory), but you still had enough alcohol in your body to be "blacked out" which is the inability to form memories.

People can be surprisingly lucid during a blackout.

You also could have gone home mostly sober and drank enough you can't remember the evening.

oceanghost··on GrubHub offered $15 off orders from 11am to 2pm in NYC without notifying workers
Grubhub once accepted and completed an order for me, for a restaurant that was closed. They kept closing my support ticket too and I was never able to resolve the issue.

I explained my issue, sent a pic of the restaurant with chains on the doors, and they closed the issue as solved and wouldn't let me reopen the ticket.

This does not surprise me in the least.
