occamrazor··on Italian privacy regulator bans ChatGPT
The president of the Italian privacy watchdog graduated in 1968, and became full professor in 1980. [1] This may partly explain tjeir approach to novel issues…

occamrazor··on Pause Giant AI Experiments: An Open Letter
Something curious: among the top signatures there are a few people affiliated to DeepMind (an Alphabet subsidiary) but no Googlers.

German also has almost deterministic pronounciation rules. Italian too, except for the position of the stress.
occamrazor··on The secret joke at the heart of the Harvard affirmative-action case
I have met manu Japanese, and a few Chinese, working for Japanese (resp. Chinese) financial companies. All of them were proud of the position they reached, even those that were not too happy about the working conditions (very long hours, slow career progression)

For Korea I only have indirect information.

While I agree that culture and education are not just means to the end of getting a lucrative job, I think that GP’s point is that it is easier for a white American, _even if they only care about money_, to appear as if they cared about other values.

For many people grown and socialized in some Asian cultures (including Japanese, Korean and Chinese), a good job in a prestigious company is considered a worthwhile objective, not something that needs to be disguised.

occamrazor··on We need a new economics of water as a common good
They are already taking their water from rivers and lakes, where else would they get it?

DO NOT LIE FLAT! You want to touch the ground in one point only, crouch/squat wit the feet close, if possible far from trees and on lower ground.
occamrazor··on USDC depegs as Circle confirms $3.3B stuck with Silicon Valley Bank
That right now they don’t have enough cash to buy them, because the cash is locked in an SVB account.

Last time I checked, a few years ago, the rules where:

- A single pet unrestrained in the back seat, or in a harness in the passenger seat.

- Two or more pets: in individual cages, physically separated from the driver.

occamrazor··on Night Train Map with all regularly served night train destinations in Europe
There used to be a Milan-Barcelona night train, with Talgo stock, but it has been discontinued a few years ago.

The problem with Spain is that the majority of the network has non-standard gauge (approximately everything except the AVE high speed trains).

occamrazor··on Cashless society in Switzerland? People to vote on keeping cash forever
I don’t think I understand what you mean. There are certainly fringe leftist groups in the world and in Switzerland, but this [1] is not one of them.

occamrazor··on Cashless society in Switzerland? People to vote on keeping cash forever
To add some context: the group that promoted this initiative is a fringe ultraconservative one. Among other things, in 2020 they were denying the existence of Covid and in 2021 they did an anti 5G campaign.
occamrazor··on MIT No-AI License
Most likely yes, because it imposes additional conditions about the use of the code.
occamrazor··on Why dark matter feels like cheating (and why it isn’t)
BTW, to strengthen your point: all space missions use Newtonian dynamics, not relativistic.
occamrazor··on How the Wealthy Save Billions in Taxes by Skirting a Century-Old Law
That’s why I suggested public companies only. Their stocks can be easily sold at any time.
occamrazor··on How the Wealthy Save Billions in Taxes by Skirting a Century-Old Law
Yes, tax would be paid on the net capital gain for the year. If negative, it can be carried forward to the next year, without limitations.

I don’t know if offsetting non-capital income with capital losses should be allowed. My intuition says no, but who knows.

occamrazor··on How the Wealthy Save Billions in Taxes by Skirting a Century-Old Law
Why not tax, at least for publicly traded stocks, the unrealized capital gains? (taking e.g. the last price of the year as basis)

In addition to the problem mentioned in the OP, this would also solve taxation for buybacks.

occamrazor··on Making chloroform so I can sleep better at night [video]
I remember reading (can’t find the source anymore) that ether would work as knock-out drug, and that indeed it was used as a plot device in crime books as chloroform is used in movies today. The problem is that ether can be highly toxic at relatively low dosage, and then it was replaced by chloroform in fiction to avoid giving dangerous ideas to people.

Is there any truth behind this theory?

occamrazor··on Facebook tracking is illegal in Europe
It’s not that simple, because of adverse selection. I wrote another comment about it https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=33924689
occamrazor··on Facebook tracking is illegal in Europe
There is an adverse selection problem: the users who would pay are probably the richer -and most profitable- ones. The only equilibrium is a very high price to opt out, far above the average revenue per user, and essentially nobody would pay for it.

Insurance has similar problems since a long time: search for Stiglitz and “unraveling“ for literature on the topic.

occamrazor··on FX swap debt a $80T 'blind spot', global regulator says
CDS are credit derivatives, not insurance contracts. There is credit insurance, but it only covers a company’s own receivables (or payables).

Trustcor is apparently connected with a spyware/malware company. Trustcor denied that, but didn’t convince Mozilla and Microsoft.
occamrazor··on Dimming the Sun to Cool the Planet
Geoengineering is our plan B, or even plan C.

It’s a bad solution, but I guess it’s good to have it ready in a drawer if things start going really wrong.

occamrazor··on Discord fined €800k for failing to comply with several obligations of the GDPR
I think Teams shows a pop-up the first time its window is closed.
occamrazor··on Open-source software vs. the proposed Cyber Resilience Act
The regulation looks reasonable: if someone is selling software, or products containing software components, they have to certify the security of their products.

OSS developers who don’t charge for the software have no obligations. If their software is used in a commercial product, the seller of that product is responsible.
