occamrazor··on Hash tables in Go and advantage of self-hosted compilers
I’m curious, what was the rationale for forbidding it?
occamrazor··on US labour watchdog halts Apple cases after group’s lawyer picked for top job
Apple group of companies, rather than a specific legal entity. A common distinction in financial journalism.
occamrazor··on US accidentally sent Maryland father to Salvadorian prison, can't get him back
FYI: Lex, not Rex.

But a Rex Talionis is an interesting concept too.

occamrazor··on Gemma 2: Improving Open Language Models at a Practical Size [pdf]
On prompts only, with answers presumably from the teacher model (Gemini).

It was not trained or RLHFd on Arena replies or user preferences.

occamrazor··on Sharing new research, models, and datasets from Meta FAIR
How so? Maybe in the past, but nothing announced today is open.
occamrazor··on Terence Tao on proof checkers and AI programs
For Tao, spending 10x time on aproof still means spending 5x less time than an average postdoc. He is incredibly fast and productive.
occamrazor··on Man creatively sneaks onto Delta flight, but gets caught
On all flights I have taken the flight attendants count the passengers on board before taxiing and check the lavatories. This method wouldn't have worked even with available free seats.
occamrazor··on Jpegli: A new JPEG coding library
Zopf means “braid” and it also denotes a medium-size bread type, made with some milk and glazed with yolk, shaped like a braid, traditionally eaten on Sunday.
occamrazor··on DBRX: A new open LLM
I like:

- “open weights” for no training data and no restrictions on use,

- “weights available” for no training data and restrictions on use, like in this case.

occamrazor··on DBRX: A new open LLM
It‘s more likely to be incompetence than malice: even their 73.7% is closer to 72% than to 74%.
occamrazor··on Google Scholar PDF Reader
Scholar is heavily used internally, it’s unlikely to be discontinued even if it has never brought any money to Google.
occamrazor··on IBM and NASA build language models to make scientific knowledge more accessible
Note that the model is based on RoBERTa and has only 125m parameter. It is not competing against any of the new popular models, not even small ones like Phi or GeMMa.
occamrazor··on Don't Invent XML Languages (2006)
Pedantic remark: HTML 4.0 is an SGML profile, but HTML 5 isn’t anymore.
occamrazor··on Biggest airport to open by 2030 with 6 runways and 120M passenger a year
They have fixed the image now.
occamrazor··on Antarctic English
For German there is an international body. Regional language differences are officially acknowledged. For example, Swiss High German has no Esszet and in Austria January is spelled "Jenner" instead of "Januar".
occamrazor··on Encoding tic-tac-toe in 15 bits
It doesn't work. There is no encoding for "OO".
occamrazor··on Haskell is Useless (2011) [video]
> Microsoft keeps paying the bills

For those who may not know it: SPJ was employed at Microsoft Research for a long time. He recently moved to Epic Games, where he co-developed the Verse language.

occamrazor··on Memory leak proof every C program
Probably because some people find it funny.
occamrazor··on Facebook incorrectly reports personal blog to DigitalOcean for phishing
Because there is no _intent_ to slander.
occamrazor··on Firefox Sync actually works
Hijacking the right click is useful for web apps like word processors, text editors, spreadsheets, image editors.
occamrazor··on Record global temperatures and U.S. billion-dollar disasters
Because total dollar cost is dominated by major hurricanes, which are rare, therefore any underlying trend would be invisible under the stochastic noise.

Frequency at a moderate severity level is much more stable and can give better insight.

As other posters already pointed out, the severity of the events should be adjusted for inflation, building characteristics, and total exposure.

occamrazor··on We investigated France's mass profiling machine
You also do random audits, to check that the targeting follows the actual risk.
occamrazor··on Othello Is Solved?
AFAIK there are no good bridge computer programs. A crucial difficulty is making sense of the bidding phase, and of signals during the card playing phase.
occamrazor··on MathJax: Beautiful and accessible math in all browsers
KeTeX is faster, but supports a limited subset of LaTeX. MathJax supports essentially everything.

For most mathuses in blog posts KaTeX is going to provide a bettter user experience, but if you want to put a math paper on a webpageMathJax is the way to go.

occamrazor··on Austria rail operator OeBB unveils new night trains
The shoe thing is an American peculiarity. In Europe I never had to take off my shoes, even when I flew to the US. And now some airports (eg LCY) don’t even require taking liquids and laptops out of the luggage.
occamrazor··on The Greening of Milan: Porta Nuova and Vertical Forest
About 10k EUR/sq.m.
occamrazor··on Nanofluidic device generates power with saltwater
It looks like they didn’t even build a PoC. All the results are simulated.
occamrazor··on 33% of Gamers Are Disabled
It is a claim made in the art (around the middle of the text).

There is no reference to the source of that information however.

occamrazor··on Let’s not encrypt (2019)
Has there been any known successful MITM attack with forged certificates since the introduction of CT? I am not aware of any.
occamrazor··on Let’s not encrypt (2019)
OP keeps repeating tha Google is making money from certificates. I don't think Google sells certificates, and even if they do the revenue is insignificant for them. Does anybody know what OP may be referring to?
