nullify88··on Monitoring My Homelab, Simply
Grafana Cloud have quite a nice free tier. If you use Alloy, you don't need any persistence locally. Everything just gets shipped off.

Similar to the author, I want to run a minimalist monitoring setup and currently just use Glances. But Grafana Cloud might be my first choice if I need to expand the setup.

nullify88··on Bitchat – A decentralized messaging app that works over Bluetooth mesh networks
I commonly Signal call my partner when we are at opposite ends of the house. I can see something like this being useful to prevent using some remote Internet server to facilitate a very local call.

I wonder if there's a home lab / self hosted solution for this.

nullify88··on Ask HN: What's the 2025 stack for a self-hosted photo library with local AI?
I'm only now just starting out my on prem photo library and have a couple of thousand which sqlite with WAL seems to have no problems with.

Also considering the type of workload, I imagine photo albums to be write heavy upon photo imports but read heavy afterwards which sqlite should excel at. I'll mostly be syncing pictures from our phones, and it'll be me and the wife using it. Postgres is overkill for my needs.

What about having to do db migrations across major updates?

nullify88··on OpenFLOW – Quickly make beautiful infrastructure diagrams local to your machine
Whoa as an infrastructure guy I had always dreamed of diagrams like this. And while I've used Miro and some OSS homebrew stuff, nothing was as polished as this. Well done.
nullify88··on Ask HN: What's the 2025 stack for a self-hosted photo library with local AI?
I wanted to like Photoprism because unlike Ente and Immich, it supports SQLite databases and doesn't require postgres (I want to keep home lab maintenance to a minimum) but the UI was difficult to like and I couldn't get hardware encoding working on my Intel N100 GPU.

nullify88··on bootc-image-builder: Build your entire OS from a Containerfile
I've been very excited on progress on bootc. I've tried to make my own coreos distro and its quite complicated in comparison.

I've used this to start from a minimal base and added what I've needed on top. Best of all, updates are delivered via a container registry.

nullify88··on Games run faster on SteamOS than Windows 11, Ars testing finds
According to some benchmarking removing the storage filters offers a mild boost when compared to adding an exclusion and you don't have the benefit of some AV protection when other processes are accessing the volume like steam etc.

nullify88··on Games run faster on SteamOS than Windows 11, Ars testing finds
You can also achieve nearly the same level of performance by adding exclusions to Windows defender. I typically exclude the game process as I still would want folders scanned when updates / downloads are running. There's a noticable improvement to load times, streaming texture latency, and CPU utilisation.

I don't believe ReFS is contributing so much to the performance improvements seen when using Dev Drives. Removing storage filters from volumes can go a long way.

I'm on Windows 10 LTSC which will receive updates until 2032. You'll likely have to add stuff to the OS to install the Windows Store and UWP apps but otherwise regular apps just work.
nullify88··on Waymo rides cost more than Uber or Lyft and people are paying anyway
Worth knowing that Uber bought Dantaxi, Denmark's largest Taxi company a couple of weeks ago. The Uber app will tap in to Dantaxi driver pool. https://www.uber.com/en-DK/newsroom/dantaxi/

I wonder if strong worker unions and regulations forced Uber to buy an existing company rather than starting their own presence.

nullify88··on Frequent reauth doesn't make you more secure
Ohh. I guess that's what Windows does when a user wants to change their own password in the domain.
nullify88··on OpenSearch 3.0 Released
It's possible but you need to buy in to the Elastic ecosystem. Stuff like *beats, logstash, etc, they can configure all sorts of index templates, and ingest pipelines depending on what you've configured it to receive.

These days, getting data in and out of Elasticsearch is quite easy with dynamic field mapping. Its keeping it performant which is tricky.

nullify88··on Sneakers (1992) – 4K makeover sourced from the original camera negative
It's a beautiful scene, and I had to buy Hong Kong Massacre after I read it was an inspiration for that scene. Its got some good beats to shoot to.
nullify88··on Sneakers (1992) – 4K makeover sourced from the original camera negative
A great example of this is Hard Boiled 1992, the Hospital Shootout.

I think audiences are beginning to appreciate continuous scenes and are becoming more frequent in western films. The most recent one I can think of is John Wick 4, when it goes top down.

Some of the recent Michael Bay movies are so aggressive when it comes to cuts, the average shot length must be 2 or 3 seconds.

Heavily referenced in Uplink, the hacker video game by Introversion Software.
nullify88··on Sneakers (1992) – 4K Restoration
I mostly see a lot of stuttering. Either during high action scenes or when there's little happening at all. It's especially noticable on HBO / MAX at 4k DV. I assumed it was due to aggressive encoding.
nullify88··on Sneakers (1992) – 4K makeover sourced from the original camera negative
There are some great stills from that movie. In particular the close up of a person's face with reflections of computer text in glasses often sticks with me. I know Timecop also has a similar scene just after the time jump. I think it looks really cool.

My brain is weird.

Well, those that are on the Windows 10 IoT LTSC builds will enjoy updates until 2032.

nullify88··on I won't connect my dishwasher to your cloud
Yes, I have the same one and I'm surprised the switch to disable it's Internet connectivity was missed and instead everyone's raging about IOT. The app is able to establish a local connection to the dishwasher and it's one of the few that can do this.

I'm very happy with the app. If you didn't already fetch electricity prices, it can display them in the app and automatically delay washing until it's cheapest. The dishwasher can also be extended by downloading additional wash programs.

It seems to be well thought out. LGs app in comparison is absolute pants and has no option for local connectivity.

Condemned was pretty atmospheric too. Good to see they are still making games.
nullify88··on Yocto, RockPi and SBOMs: Building modern embedded Linux images
I would suggest taking a look at bootc https://github.com/containers/bootc which enables you to use OCI / Docker containers as a transport and delivery system for OS updates. That makes available much of the tooling used to build and deliver container images for the purposes of delivering os updates.

Such possibilities include the various registeries available for storing OS updates and branches. Tooling for security scanning, sbom generation, signing Docker or podman for building the image.

It's important to note that the container image itself is not executed upon boot, but rather unpacked before hand.

nullify88··on Intel's Battlemage Architecture
