nsporillo··on Building a static serverless website using S3 and CloudFront
Certainly not a bad idea, but in my case I care to own the domain because I also use it when naming Java packages for the projects I write. Since I'm already paying for the domain, I figure I might as well use it for my actual website too. I've found S3 and Route53 to be the most cost effective for my particular use case.
nsporillo··on Building a static serverless website using S3 and CloudFront
The last time I tried to maintain a personal VPS I was using it for a Jenkins build server so users could obtain the latest artifacts of some open source programs I work on. That burned me after it got exploited using a Jenkins RCE and a bitcoin miner was installed on the VPS.

Also, the cheapest VPS you can find likely won't ever achieve the level of scale your static website in S3 could achieve. In the rare event you get a lot of web traffic, you're only hosed if AWS is hosed.

I have my personal website deployed to S3 and my DNS in Route53 with a Travis CI commit hook that will upload my files and update the permissions automatically when I push changes to Github.

Only costs ~$27/year to have a domain($15) and a static website deployed to S3/R53 ($1/month), which I've found to be fairly reasonable for the level of reliability I can expect.

I admit it is complicated up front but once it is setup and updates are automated it is really nice to not need to worry about self hosting, hardware, VPS', etc just for a simple website.

nsporillo··on AMD Threadripper 3990X 64-Core beats dual Xeon Platinum 8280 in benchmark leak
I have the AMD Ryzen 9 3900x (paid $499 at launch). Last I checked it is now $469, so prices will likely inch down as time goes on. I would probably wait until the next AMD launch sometime this year if you want to get a sweet deal on a great chip.

nsporillo··on The Fed Has Bought 70% of Net Treasury Issuance Since October
I agree it is a bubble and believe once the cheap easy money ends, all the money chasing yields will be sucked out of stocks.

I think HN shares some skepticism, but in general isn't quite as right leaning as ZH seems to be. I enjoy reading both for viewpoints along the entire political spectrum.

I can confirm there is loads of trash you need to dig through to found interesting content. I browse daily to find counter viewpoints to mainstream media, and there is a lot of useless junk.

nsporillo··on Huawei expected to surpass Apple to become world’s No 2 phone maker
Precisely. When you can manufacture dirt cheap, steal the innovation of others, then work your white collar to the bone (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/996_working_hour_system). It is not surprising they can afford to undercut competitors and dump goods onto the market.

Why innovate if you can wait for someone else to and simply steal the result of expensive research and development?

nsporillo··on Cut global emissions by 7.6% per year for next decade to meet 1.5°C Paris target
Sure if one is counting just their personal impact, but in reality the developing nations will have no problem replacing you and the children you choose to not have with their own and it'll be a wash. Those resources don't disappear, the market will move them around.

Is the argument to have less kids to save the planet not just population control propaganda?

nsporillo··on Cut global emissions by 7.6% per year for next decade to meet 1.5°C Paris target
Call me cynical, but suppose 300 million westerners decided to stick to this pledge. What is stopping those newly freed up resources from being consumed by the remaining 7.4+ billion?

Cratering energy prices makes it more affordable for developing nations to rapidly industrialize which is a one way street towards massive emissions until a sustainable solution is realized.

Climate Policy is a classic example of how the prisoner's dilemma can cause a tragedy of the commons. I personally don't see how it can be solved in a world where there is intense competition.

nsporillo··on The Real Class War
Average voter doesn't care about the merits of competitive advantage. Maybe if the Chinese actually opened their markets up to competition would we see true benefits in the west. The problem of course is preventing the majority of the wealth going straight to the top.
nsporillo··on China
Hong Kong is still extremely important to the CCP. Tariffs can be reduced by first moving exports through Hong Kong because of a first sale rule[0]. The recent bill passed in the US congress puts some of these rules under scrutiny[1].

nsporillo··on Disney+ hit by technical glitches on launch day
I bought an HD antenna that gave me roughly 20 local channels with crystal clear picture and no buffering for $28 - no subscription. I'd highly recommend it for cord cutters to augment their streaming with local news and sports on national tv (world series, super bowl, sunday night football, etc).

You're also far less likely to receive a fraudulent product buying direct from the company versus Amazon thanks to the third party sellers and commingling of inventory.

nsporillo··on Advice to Junior Developers
As a junior developer myself I've spent the past 4 months exclusively working on a project that began development right after I on-boarded. Initially a massive team effort, the team was re-organized such that I ended up spending the most time and becoming an expert in the new system.

This has been a tremendous experience since I've clearly shown my technical competency, but with all the depth in one area I've lost the breadth of knowledge of all the components we work on. The article mentions learning the business, and I feel like that's at odds with becoming an expert in one area at least in a short period of time.

nsporillo··on Being Bored Is Good
It might be controversial to mention, but isn't there an underlying feeling of "us versus them"?

Consider the movie Idiocracy, where the high-IQ couple decided to put off children until they were unable to conceive - contrasted with a trashy man who had dozens of children with many different women.

Do you want the world you live in 20 years from now to be one with people like you or unlike you? Regardless it reduces to people being selfish, but I dont think it's inherently wrong to want to raise children into upstanding citizens.

nsporillo··on Raspberry Pi 4
I run a pi-hole as well and I have to say it's been an absolutely great addition to my home network.

It essentially blocks tracking and advertisements on all devices, not just my computers with ad block. Just need to keep the block lists up to date every couple weeks, but it's honestly great.

Seems like the laseregg 2+ at best detects PM2.5, but something like the PurpleAir sensor can detect PM1.0 for roughly the same cost. Have you or anyone else used it? I'm interested in purchasing one.
