nroets··on Show HN: Beeper Mini – iMessage client for Android
Beeper will know only a small number of valid serial numbers

If it ever becomes popular, there will be a lot of duplicate serial numbers. That's easy to detect and ban.

nroets··on Show HN: Beeper Mini – iMessage client for Android
Apple can break Beeper without relying on the secure enclave: If Apple devices just send their serial number (IMEI for their GSM products), their servers can refuse to talk to hardware they didn't manufacture.
nroets··on 23andMe confirms hackers stole ancestry data on 6.9M users
I'm only suggesting password complexity as a compromise so that websites wouldn't need to implement OAuth. (Do you have a better comprise ?)

Password complexity encourages the use of password managers. They in turn remove the need to reuse passwords.

nroets··on 23andMe confirms hackers stole ancestry data on 6.9M users
Cookie consent is just a nuisance.

Like the cancer warnings in California.

Isn't it time governments start to regulate passwords ? (They already regulate a lot of privacy issues like medical and financial history. Some governments even regulate the use of finger print authentication of employees)

For example, any website that allows users to choose normal, easy to remember passwords should meet a long list of requirements: For example security audits, bug bounties, capital reserves to deal with class action suits.

Then small websites will start either implement Open ID or encourage their users to use password manages.

nroets··on Booking.com hackers increase attacks on customers
If a property asks you to cancel your booking on Booking, please make sure that Booking knows the real reason.

(I'm leading a very nomadic lifestyle and I've used Booking over 50 times)

nroets··on Files Suggest UN Climate Summit's Leader Is Using Event to Promote Fossil Fuels
Then they should lead by example and buy carbon offsets from a reputable source.

AFAIK, Bill Gates is the only 1% er who does this.

nroets··on Mapped: The Migration of the Millionaires in 2023
Chinese millionaires are not leaving because they fear instability.

They are leaving because they want the luxuries of the West: Suburban lifestyle with cars, freedom to travel, freedom to invest globally, access to the best universities, access to technology like Facebook, Google and latest gadgets.

nroets··on Mapped: The Migration of the Millionaires in 2023
If all the millionaires moved to the same country, global inequality won't change. But the wealth of the individual countries will equalize.

Many countries would no longer have the tax revenue to pay for education, healthcare, feeding schemes etc.

nroets··on I made a website that tells you which human foods are toxic for dogs
Humans have been cultivating grapes for millennia and dogs were there, literally enjoying the wind fall.

So feeding your dog a few grapes doesn't make you a bad person.

nroets··on I made a website that tells you which human foods are toxic for dogs
Even toasted whole wheat bread is marked as toxic.

Unless you add raisins. Then suddenly it's okay.

In the real world (third world) street dogs thrive of garbage.

nroets··on 'Energy independent' Uruguay runs on 100% renewables for four straight months
He gets downvoted because the real question is if burning wood causes climate change. Instead, he prefers to debate the exact meaning of closed loop.

Wood burning does not cause climate change provided it's matched by reforestation efforts.

As others point out, the real problem with wood burning is it's effects on air quality.

nroets··on World's largest aircraft breaks cover in Silicon Valley
With the advent of Star Link, those 45 hours will be somewhat productive.
nroets··on Starlink Direct to Cell
The most valuable use case is not emergencies, search and rescue.

It's tracking vehicles (big and small) in third world countries with the aim of support, crime detection, asset recovery and law enforcement.

nroets··on Earth had hottest 3-months on record; unprecedented sea temps & extreme weather
In China, the life expectancy already exceeded that of the US. They don't need to spend more on healthcare!
nroets··on Earth had hottest 3-months on record; unprecedented sea temps & extreme weather
Europe may have many cars, but they are smaller and drive shorter distance.

Perhaps air travel is cheaper. But wages are lower meaning people need to work more hours before they can take a flight.

nroets··on Earth had hottest 3-months on record; unprecedented sea temps & extreme weather
Europe doesn't have food insecurity. Health is pretty good and there's a safety net. Even China scores pretty well on those points. Yet their per capita emissions are much lower than the US.
nroets··on Australia to give cats a curfew because they are murdering so many other animals
The cats I met will just take the 5 th.
nroets··on DC Grids
Lights and TVs need a fraction of the power than they did 30 years ago.

That means they can run off USB C even though it's only speced to 180 W.

Converting an electric geyser to run from USB C should even be practical: Especially if it's a bachelor who typically only use it for showering.

nroets··on Worldcoin ignored initial order to stop iris scans in Kenya, records show
Governments regularly do terrible things in the banking system: Printing money, capital controls and mind boggling amount of red tape. With this red tape they can punish anyone who disagrees with them.
nroets··on Worldcoin ignored initial order to stop iris scans in Kenya, records show
Is it "white savior complex" or is it a belief in laissez faire capitalist ideas ?
nroets··on Every phone should be able to run personal websites
I registered a domain, paid for word press hosting, learned the set up and started writing my travel journal there. The photos display in full HD without ads.

But most family and friends forget to visit it, because Facebook is not promoting my website.

nroets··on STL: The Vector
The CS101 implementation of a Vector is that the data is only moved when the size of the vector reaches k*a^n where n is an integer and a is usually 2.

Then the time it takes to move the vector to a new location is amortized as the vector grows. Then push() takes constant time.

So the CS101 is optimal for the study of computer science.

nroets··on Plans to plant billions of trees threatened by undersupply of seedlings
If we start doing it at scale, a lot of people will assume it will work and think it's okay to make cross country trips in a big RV.

Already there are people who think recycling will save the planet.

nroets··on Oregon County Sues BP, Chevron, Shell, Exxon for $51B Climate Damages
"An inconvenient truth" and Greta Thunberg hardly had any effect in changing policy.

So don't tell me the lies of the oil companies had any effect on policy. Congress saw the conflict of interest, but didn't want to do anything that raise gas prices.

nroets··on Oregon County Sues BP, Chevron, Shell, Exxon for $51B Climate Damages
Oil companies also know that their products are critical to the production and distribution of food and a long list of other modern day necessities. Should they cease operation and let us starve ?
nroets··on Born in Babylon: The spread of Rastafari
Also ask them who the indigenous people of Southern Africa are. They will never acknowledge that it's the Khoisan and that the Bantu are colonizers.

nroets··on French govt. says users of uBlock Origin, Signal etc. are potential terrorists
Agreed! Next they will arrest anyone critical of the government and lock them up for using end to end encryption on WhatsApp.
nroets··on Fallen Flag Railroad Photos
Yes, Microsoft really need the brand exposure /s
nroets··on Starlink v2 reached the brightness reduction target recommended by astronomers
I'm guessing it will also make airline passengers more productive.
