notdang··on Color Photos of Stalin-Era Soviet Union Taken by a US diplomat
Gulag period ended with the death of Stalin. After that no mass incarcerations and deportations were happening on the industrial scale.
notdang··on Color Photos of Stalin-Era Soviet Union Taken by a US diplomat
No,in this case it's different, the ice cream is still made in the ex-URSS countries and you can still try it and you can still not find anything like this outside.
notdang··on Color Photos of Stalin-Era Soviet Union Taken by a US diplomat
In the defense of the "plombir" ice cream, I still think that there is no better ice cream. Plombir is still made in that region and whenever I go back there, I eat it in industrial quantities. I could not find anything close to Plombir in the western world.
notdang··on U.S. to give away free lighthouses as GPS makes them unnecessary
There is a big problem with your dream: stairs.

Once you hit a certain age, the stairs become an obstacle that cannot be solved. Have seen it with my grandparents and parents in normal houses. Now imagine the stairs in a lighthouse.

notdang··on Evidence that the shingles vaccine prevents a good chunk of dementia cases
Same fears for me. Wondering if there is a kind of a dead men switch for it.
notdang··on Electric cars prove we need to rethink brake lights
Hyundai/Kia will do the minimum necessary to comply with the local laws.
notdang··on Germany Falls into Recession
Not sure about Germany, but in my country of 120mln people I don't see many EVs, but I see a lot of Chinese ICE cars lately, those cars are good enough and with the latest cars price increase, a lot of people prefer them over the Japanese/US/EU manufactures
notdang··on Europe’s biggest city council faces £100M bill in Oracle ERP project disaster
They changed from SAP ERP to Oracle ERP. There were no 20 different utilities to begin with.
notdang··on The Diary of a Ukrainian Filmmaker-Turned-Soldier
Here is a less patriotic and a more realistic one from the same location: https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2023/05/29/two-weeks-at-t...
notdang··on Ask HN: Has anyone switched from a professional job to a more manual one?
not the op, but one I know of is epilepsy, screens can trigger seizures in some people.
notdang··on Bilingualism affords no general cognitive advantages: Study
Don't know how ridiculous it is, but I live in a Spanish speaking country, using English at work, consuming English part of the internet, occasionally using Russian during the day (because of Russian "refugees") and no one around me speaks my native language. There is a cognitive load.
notdang··on Bilingualism affords no general cognitive advantages: Study
Completely agree with you, I have the same experience, just that instead of French, it's Spanish for me. In French I am not fluent, but it still adds up to the mess.

p.s. adrenalin from IRC?

notdang··on Double-slit time diffraction at optical frequencies
I was referring to the double slit experiment with a single photon and the explanation of the result by MWI.
notdang··on Double-slit time diffraction at optical frequencies
Because of parallel universes?
notdang··on Moving from Rust to C++
My memory mught be failing me but I think Google anounced Gmail with 1GB(which was unthinkable at that time) on April 1, and the majority were sure that it was an 1st of April joke.

When it appeared it felt like magic and wad still unbelievable. It's sad that the things turned out as they are.

notdang··on India Shut Down Cell Service for 27M During a Manhunt
Is being a separatist something bad?

For example imagine you are part of the USSR, but not Russia, instead you are in Latvia. Not wanting to be part of USSR, makes you are a separatist. Is there something bad in it?

notdang··on Cashless society in Switzerland? People to vote on keeping cash forever
All good and convenient untill some governmental agency decides that you cannot use the cashless methods and by that time cash is not available because no one protested since it was so convenient.
notdang··on ‘I will show you how safe Telegram is’
From what I've heard from my Russian colleagues quite a lot of people have an alternative number they register telegram with. The SIM card is never stored in the main phone. Also it was popular to buy a phone number in countries like Finland and keep it alive by making small payments. Obviously you never use this number directly in Russia. The was a method to read the SMS messages online.
notdang··on Ask HN: Are you going to shell out $42 for ChatGPT pro? Is it worth it?
Ask an AI: "the meaning of life, the universe, and everything"
notdang··on Ask HN: How many of you are open to Piracy again?
I usually choose not to watch. And not because of morals, but because the life is sad when so much effort goes into consuming content.
notdang··on Lingua Graeca Per Se Illustrata
yes, the content is very different. The Italian version is more like what the subject of this post is, Ørberg style.

The Italian edition is an expanded version of the original textbook, but they don't have permission to sell it in other markets.

notdang··on Lingua Graeca Per Se Illustrata
As an alternative, there is the Spanish translation of the Athenaze Italian edition, which is very close to the Italian one, and not like the English one.

Currently slowly trying to go through it.

notdang··on What Is the Secret of Chernivtsi?: A Conversation with Ihor Pomerantsev
Chernivtsi (Cernăuți) and the region as a whole has a quite big Romanian population which is being tried to be assimilated by the country those territories currently belong to. And ironically the article mainly complains about the same thing, but performed by soviets.
notdang··on AI Homework
After I corrected the chat bot:

Q: this is wrong, John Locke believed in separation of powers, Hobbes was a proponent of absolutism.

A: I apologize if my response was not accurate. Thomas Hobbes was indeed a proponent of absolutism, which is the belief that a single, central authority should have complete control over a country. Hobbes believed that this central authority should be an absolute monarch, who would have the power to make all decisions for the country and its people. He did not believe in the separation of powers or in a system of checks and balances. My knowledge cutoff is 2021, and it is possible that my response was based on outdated information. If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

notdang··on The Sounds of CDMX
Well, these sounds are all over Mexico and Mexico is not reduced to its capital.
notdang··on 10 years of Ecce Homo, the worst artistic restoration that changed a city
I've seen this pattern when searching for local news in English in non-English countries. Those sites are basically getting the news in the local language and auto translate them into English.
notdang··on Mexican Loan Apps, Extortion, and the Google Play Store
They don't approve the loans automatically. They go through your photos, social networks, calls, etc. to make sure it's a real account.
notdang··on How the Path to Home Ownership Runs Through Mexico
You can never live a full life like this. Without a residency permit you won't open a bank account, won't buy any property, won't by a car for example, renting outside Airbnb is difficult, won't be using any governmental services.
notdang··on I made an app to find great food trucks near you
Tried to use the app but the only thing I see is a Google form. So cannot give my opinion on it.

I went through the FAQ and could not find aanything about where this will be available available. Is it US only?

notdang··on Inside the longest Atlassian outage
it seems that it worked as intended, thus they have a QA process. The problem was in the wrong IDs provided and I doubt that at their scale they have a staging environment that duplicates the customer data.
