noisebleed··on I helped drive Adobe's acquisitions of Typekit and Nitobi. AMA
You're absolutely right. I've spent hours debugging strange form input behavior related to quirks in Mobile Safari / UIWebView which are hardly Phonegap's fault. It really comes down to optimization and ironing out all of the wrinkles, though it can be a bit painful since most mobile browser quirks aren't well documented online.
noisebleed··on The forerunners of Facebook: an ode to the BBS
Last year I found a backup of my early 90s WWIV BBS on 20-ish 3.5" disks. I thought about trying to retrieve the data, but decided it wasn't worth the effort.. so I just tossed them. This article makes me a bit sad about the decision.
noisebleed··on The post-Jobs era: Tim Cook brings philanthropy back to Apple
I always figured Jobs was trying to maintain a neutral position with regards to charity, contributions, etc. It's hardly uncommon for people to donate to personal causes anonymously to avoid the politics and potential perceived tackiness with what's intended to be a generous act.
noisebleed··on Why Turntable.fm is the most exciting social service of the year
There are hundreds of ways to get free music that haven't had the same explosive growth rate as turntable. I think the article is right in that they've done very well with subtle but surprisingly deep social aspects.

I do think they have a huge legal problem looming, especially with regards to letting you play tracks others have uploaded. Google and Amazon are already fighting the 'public performance of copyrighted works' issue, and turntable is far more blatant.

noisebleed··on Dear Record Labels: Focus on Buyers, Not Thieves
Some people have different use cases than you. Why do you think high-capacity portable music players are still made?
noisebleed··on Ask HN: If you owned MySpace what would you do with it?
Genuinely curious, what do you think a "modern programming framework" would change?
noisebleed··on Money Won’t Buy You Health Insurance
I mentioned it above, but the closest I've seen to this idea is Freelancers Union / Insurance ( freelancersinsuranceco.com )
noisebleed··on Money Won’t Buy You Health Insurance
I've been using Freelancers for about a year, paying ~350/month for a decent PPO and dental. Not incredible, but it's the best option I could find apart from high deductible plans. NY only unfortunately, and I'm not aware of any similar things elsewhere.
noisebleed··on iAd Producer from Apple
I know as a fact that Adobe intends to try, but I can't help but think whatever they cook up is going to be only marginally useful for serious development (which frankly is my first impression of Producer as well, though it does have potential)
noisebleed··on iAd Producer from Apple
I think publicly releasing this application is pretty solid proof they intend to open it up soon.
noisebleed··on This Kid Will Do Whatever You Want in Antartica
Wow, I'm extremely curious how that will pan out. Going to Antarctica has been a lifelong dream of mine, and I always thought it was relatively difficult to do, but I suppose there aren't border guards.

Incidentally, I'm from North Dakota so I know we're supposed to be mortal enemies, but I do wish you the best of luck.

noisebleed··on Implementing a HTML5 canvas-based, tilt sensing snow globe
Yes, but there's been a common workaround using window.orientation for a while:

noisebleed··on Kinect by Microsoft Keeps You Entertained Hands Free
The dance game is a pretty ridiculous amount of fun, assuming you like these sorts of things at all. The casual gamer appeal that made the Wii a success is pretty immediately obvious when you see it in action, and they definitely nailed the technology.

That said, the $150 price tag seems a bit steep ($400 with a console). Early sales do look pretty strong, but I'm not entirely convinced this will get more people to buy a 360, especially if they already have a Wii gathering dust.

Personally I'm most interested in the hacks people will inevitably come up with that take advantage of the technology in different contexts.

noisebleed··on Ask HN: Best place to start in San Francisco?
A lot of people will suggest avoiding the Tenderloin (as you can see in the other comments), but I know several people who live there and haven't had any particular problems. Yes, there's a bit of a zombie infestation, but as long as you keep your wits about you and don't stumble around drunk at 3am you'll likely have no problems. It does get sketchier the closer you get to Market, so a little further up in "Lower Nob Hill" (aka the "Tendernob") is a better choice overall.. still fairly cheap, centrally located, and not quite as rough.

If it's feasible in your situation, I'd definitely recommend subletting for a month and getting a feel for the different neighborhoods. December isn't the greatest time to look for places since most people aren't moving unless they have to, so the extra time would also be a big benefit.

noisebleed··on Ask HN: US-based freelancers - how much is health insurance?
If you happen to end up in New York, check out Freelancers Union: http://freelancersunion.com/

I'm paying around $300/month for a decent basic PPO and dental (for just myself)

noisebleed··on San Francisco is getting a smarter parking meter system
Part of the hope is that it will reduce overall car traffic by shortening the amount of time people are just driving in circles (distractedly) looking for parking. Apparently this makes up a surprisingly big percentage of the time spent in cars in SF.
noisebleed··on Try Ruby (in your browser, now with 1.9)
Yeah, for whatever reason the command key doesn't register on the page
noisebleed··on The New Mighty Mouse: The Magic Mouse From Apple
The apparent lack of middle click is pretty much a deal breaker for me.. I find it too useful for tabbed browsing. Shame, everything else about it looks pretty good.
noisebleed··on Knob Creek's Unusual Marketing Campaign: We ran out of whiskey
It usually goes for about $30 / 750ml, which isn't the cheapest option but not really expensive relative to a lot of whiskey.
noisebleed··on Apple kills off DRM for whole iTunes music catalog
Based on how FairPlay works, and how quickly the conversion happens, I think itunes probably just gets permission from Apple's servers to permanently decrypt the files: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FairPlay#How_it_works
noisebleed··on Ask YC: PHP6?
It's definitely planned. Here's an interview with Zmievski about it: http://www.fosdem.org/2008/interview/andrei+zmievski
noisebleed··on Ask YC: PHP6?
According to Andrei Zmievski, greatly improved unicode support is a big priority too, which of course will be nice for i18n stuff.
noisebleed··on Aviary - 18 different web-based graphics tools
There's a short review and a link to some invites here: http://www.webware.com/8301-1_109-9868874-2.html

The writer I spoke to about Phoenix, the photo app, said it was mostly eye candy. I think the problem is that with so many projects they'll all be mediocre at best, if they happen at all.
