noisebleed··on Too Much Experience to Be Hired? Some Older Americans Face Age Bias
The article references this study: http://www.frbsf.org/economic-research/publications/economic...

... which is based on the rate of response to resumes that were identical except for age, submitted to thousands of job openings.

There's also the whistleblower info that forms the basis of the RJ Reynolds lawsuit, which states they explicitly told recruiters to avoid experienced candidates in favor of people two or three years out of college.

This allegedly resulted in a unusually low number of people over 40 being hired (19 out of 1000). Similar statistics have been used recently in lawsuits against Yahoo and Google for alleged gender and age discrimination (still pending, afaik)

noisebleed··on iPad mini
Even "resolutionary"?
noisebleed··on iPad mini
I don't know if it qualifies as "good", but the internet has coined a term for it: http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=wahjah
noisebleed··on Stanley Kubrick held his own camera, so why shouldn’t you?
The accompanying coffee table book is pretty great too.
noisebleed··on Richard Stallman Collapses At Barcelona Conference
Bringing up a comment he made on pedophilia and some vague allegations about him inviting young guys into his room is certainly sticking your finger somewhere.

But oh, right, other people said those things, not you. You're just reporting, in a comment thread about the man's uncertain physical health, asking if it's "acceptable" to wish him well.

noisebleed··on JQuery knobs
Well, they also have the benefit of being compact which can be beneficial in complex audio applications, but I agree that they generally suck and would almost always be better off as a slider.
noisebleed··on Demo of how to debug code inside a mobile webview
You mean, for example, using Safari to debug mobile Safari / webview-based apps? That'll get you about 80% there, but environment differences (i.e., memory and processor limitations) on the device and quirky rendering behavior in mobile webkit almost always result in weird bugs that traditionally have required a lot of poking around blindly to fix. Differences between the simulator and the actual device are fairly common too.

It's only fairly recently that useful debugging tools like this and the built-in iOS 5 stuff have emerged.

noisebleed··on Demo of how to debug code inside a mobile webview
I thought that didn't work on the actual device, which frequently is different enough from the simulator that Catalyst could still be extremely useful.

Also, I've never looked into it, but is there any comparable built-in debugging method for Android?

noisebleed··on Demo of how to debug code inside a mobile webview
Yup, same here. Still, the overall concept is interesting and potentially useful enough that I'm going to try it out.
noisebleed··on Save 50% on all oreilly's ebooks and videos (today only)
I haven't gotten far enough to give a good review, but you do know they have the whole thing online for free as an "Open Feedback Publishing System" project, right? http://ofps.oreilly.com/titles/9781449398583/
noisebleed··on South Korean military starts iPhone ban in its major buildings, permits Android
You're seriously citing an unsubstantiated article where the central analogy is literally "Apple = Nazis"? I normally skip the Gawker bashing because it's pretty played out by now, but that has got to be one of the worst examples of tech journalism I've ever read. Even if that sort of security sweep does happen at Apple, I honestly can't think of a worse way to present the information.
noisebleed··on PhoneGap vs. Native: Some Thoughts on Going Native
Yeah, that's a super useful program. The feature it's based on was only introduced in iOS 5 ( http://hiediutley.com/2011/11/22/debugging-ios-apps-using-sa... ) .. it would have saved me countless hours of misery over the past couple of years if it was possible before.
noisebleed··on Aziz Ansari releases DRM-free standup special for $5
I don't think anyone is debating that music can be recorded cheaply, the point is about standup being easier to produce (from a technical perspective), and unless you're thinking of a solo acapella singer, music requires a lot more production value, even just to get something sounding "decent".
noisebleed··on Aziz Ansari releases DRM-free standup special for $5
Sure, the two can be comparable if you're recording a solo accapella

'not much' for a 'decent' sounding album

noisebleed··on Aziz Ansari releases DRM-free standup special for $5
I'm curious as to why you hold that opinion. It contradicts most things I've witnessed about either artform.
noisebleed··on Daring Fireball: iPad (3)
Well, the SD card simply isn't going to happen on any Apple iOS device, but what are your objections to jailbreaking? It's easy and addresses all of your software concerns. Yes of course it would be great not to have to do it at all, but how is it different than the rooting process you have to go through with most Android devices?
noisebleed··on There is no point to distributing music in 24-bit/192kHz format.
Trent Reznor / Nine Inch Nails has done it several times: http://www.ninremixes.com/multitracks.php

Plenty of other artists have as well, but this is the most high profile example I can think of. I agree it would be great if it happened more often.

noisebleed··on Save My House From Apple
Oh, yeah, so it is. I didn't notice initially. Probably explains why I was so reminded.

Again though.. I hate to see devs getting screwed over in any context, and I wish Bryan the best, but personally I think he's making his point poorly. Apple is not trying to take his house, and his birthday is irrelevant to their actions.

noisebleed··on Save My House From Apple
Somewhat tangental, but this is the second post I've seen here recently that plays up the ".. and this happened on my birthday!" angle ( this being the first: http://lunduke.com/?p=2206 ).

I'm extremely sympathetic to anyone who's struggling, but seriously, why should a birthday matter in this context? You can debate Apple's app store policy, but should they be expected to factor in stuff like birthdays when they enforce it? It just seems like a cheap pity play that, for me at least, undermines whatever point is being made.

noisebleed··on Headphones for Hackers
Check out Etymotics.. they have a few. I really like my HF3s.
noisebleed··on Headphones for Hackers
Yeah, I was going to menton Etymotic as well.. easily my favorite in-ear isolating headphones.

I have the HF3s and while of course they sound better with an amp (I use a FiiO E7 at home), it's not necessary. I use them without one at work and while walking around and they're still great.

noisebleed··on The Forgetting Pill Erases Painful Memories Forever
Agreed that the title (and opening graphic) are irritatingly sensationalist.

Still, a better understanding of the chemical association between event memory and emotion is very interesting. Even if it's not used to develop widely available drug treatments, being able to manually and precisely knock out the link has great implications for developing effective psychological treatment of PTSD, depression, etc.

noisebleed··on All Web Developers Should Stop Doing This Immediately
You honestly think they "deliberately break the web browsers in their mobile devices" and are "making it actively difficult for web developers"?

Most of my professional work over the last two years has been targeted at mobile webkit, usually Safari, and while I have frequently felt the urge to defenestrate an iPad due to some weird quirk, I never reached the conclusion that someone had consciously crippled them. Mobile Safari's DOM rendering is all sorts of wacky and requires a frustrating amount of non-intuitive workarounds, but with regards to the orientation issues you mention, browsers haven't really had to deal with rotating displays until fairly recently. So, I can understand not liking the implementation decisions someone made, but attributing it to malice seems a bit absurd.

.. and unless there are some undocumented tricks I haven't come across, I've found web development for Android devices to be a truly unholy mess, significantly worse than Safari.

noisebleed··on Cathode: A terminal app for mac that looks really cool
Agreed, that would be awesome.. though just the fact that the angle of the reflection changes as you move the window around was the 'shut up and take my money' moment for me.
noisebleed··on Cathode: A terminal app for mac that looks really cool
I'm surprised to see so many complaints about the price. I was happy to pay $10 just to reward the effort for such an impressively geeky toy when it first showed up a year ago, even though I've never used it for real work.

I will be complaining if the developers only support the App Store version now though.

edit: I hadn't thought about it from the perspective of not being able to play around with it before buying. I wouldn't have based on three screenshots and a one-sentence description. As gammarator mentioned above, there's a free version on the developer's site that's well worth checking out. The granular control of the effects and overall attention to detail is really cool.

noisebleed··on "I haven’t been drunk in 3 years... and I’ve been partying way more than you."
So, I completely agree with you regarding the observable counterproductive nature of over-restrictive substance laws, but I'm curious why you put "problems" in quotes. I ask because I've seen a tendency in some cultures to feel that alcohol addiction doesn't exist, or that it's an issue that is severely overstated elsewhere.
noisebleed··on Don't Get Grinfucked By Your Users
It's very common to be willfully (as opposed to reflexively, as you would with a friend) nice in the US, though it depends a lot on the context and region.

I grew up in the upper midwest, and the politeness there is almost pathological. It seems to be mostly conflict avoidance. In California, I've seen more people wanting to paint everything a peachier shade than reality might otherwise indicate, due to optimism. In NYC, friendliness without cause is commonly looked at with suspicion, and there's a tendency to treat it like the 'grinfucking' in Suster's original article.

So, you might get the best feedback in NY (assuming someone doesn't have reason to exploit you). In terms of quality of life, I think there's a lot to be said for the California approach, which is why I live here and (in my opinion) why the bay area has a better culture of innovation. For the purposes of this article, the Midwest 'just trying to be nice' mentality is pretty ubiquitous (though more glaringly obvious there), and well worth being aware of.

noisebleed··on MPAA Publicly Threatens to Stop Writing Checks
The EFF make it their job to look for issues like this. They were the first place I heard about SOPA and PIPA, and I doubt I'm the only one. I certainly wasn't spending time monitoring congress and reading proposed legislation, and even if I was I'm not sufficiently versed in US law to know what the bills might imply.

Obviously it's difficult to measure, but I would be surprised if the EFF weren't critically instrumental in the earliest stages of awareness about the implications of these bills, which led to people taking action.

How would you propose they could have made a more significant contribution?

noisebleed··on Apple’s iOS 5 Update Now Available For iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch
Yeah... trying to update has actually completely screwed up my phone. I can't even get it to restore.

edit: finally got it to work again after going through the 'force into restore mode' process about a dozen times.

noisebleed··on Steve Jobs Book Excerpt: Why he wore the black mock turtleneck uniform
Interesting.. I had never heard that, or anything about the Steven P. Jobs Foundation at all really. Now I'm curious to see the logo but I'm not having much luck finding it.
