nnutter··on Apple: Open Source
Oh Johnny Ivy... you strike again.
nnutter··on Apple: Open Source
That's where the ambiguity of "major computer company" comes in. Probably the same with IBM. They are probably implying "major personal computer company" but couldn't say "major PC company" because PC = Windows.
nnutter··on Superfish 2.0: Now Dell Is Breaking HTTPS
I think the problem is the private key is accessible AND machines were already setup to trust it (because of the cert). So what s_henry_paulson said is technically correct but it's conceptually wrong.
nnutter··on Superfish 2.0: Now Dell Is Breaking HTTPS
It annoys me that this is being so directly compared to Superfish. Yes the technical aspect is similar but the intent is very different. Intent matters.
nnutter··on How Azure scaled to 2,000 employees on GitHub
I'll make an effort to take notes over the next few weeks and put something up on the issue tracker. To be absolutely clear I think GitLab is pretty good I'd just prefer and recommend GitHub still if self-hosted and cost weren't the primary requirements.
nnutter··on Panicparse: Crash your Go app in style
I'm not super confident but I think the stdlib flags are a POSIX implementation. However, POSIX is not what most people are used to. For example, POSIX says flags/options come before arguments but most Linux shells allow you to put the flags/options after arguments as well, e.g. `ls ~ -lh`.
nnutter··on Panicparse: Crash your Go app in style
You could view the standard/core library as the minimum need to make a language pragmatically useful. You could also view it as trying to prevent fragmentation. However, the stability of standard/core libraries is also what causes them to be "where things go to die" because changing them is very hard to do without breaking things.

In the case of Go they also prefer to let third parties experiment and determine which design works best rather than trying to guess.

So it's all a bit subjective hence the differing opinions. The point is it's people trying to balance trade-offs.

nnutter··on Microsoft's Software is Malware
I agree with you but I think there argument would be that you could maintain the software "yourself" or hire someone to do so; presumably not at exorbitantly high rates.
nnutter··on How Azure scaled to 2,000 employees on GitHub
Having used both GitHub and GitLab pretty extensively I could only recommend GitLab if self-hosted and cost are your primary requirements. That being said GitLab is an impressive product given the development forces behind each.
nnutter··on What will be the legacy of Go?
Seems like FUD. 549 contributors according to GitHub. Open Source. Fork it. https://github.com/golang/go

nnutter··on Apple doesn’t allow Chaos Computer Club tvOS application
Does CCC have an app on Fire TV? On Chromecast (Android)? It bothers me that Apple has this power but is there even another choice in this specific example?
nnutter··on Are tarballs obsolete?
Another issue with GitHub's automated release tarballs is that they do not include submodules. Though, I've also found that submodules are often overlooked when cloning.
nnutter··on Dell XPS 13 with Skylake (Non-Developer)
Anyone know what the odds of running Linux on these would be? Were there any hardware differences between the Developer Edition and the Windows Edition in the previous generation?
nnutter··on Dell XPS 13 with Skylake (Non-Developer)
I must be out of the loop but I thought Apple said they couldn't update the CPUs in the 21.5" iMac because Skylake with integrated graphics wasn't out yet.
nnutter··on Apple CEO Tim Cook: 'Privacy Is a Fundamental Human Right'
Does it let you install binary apps or do you have to compile from source? Do they still have to be signed? Who verifies the signature?
nnutter··on Apple CEO Tim Cook: 'Privacy Is a Fundamental Human Right'
Apple might just be better at covering it up. I would rather see it implemented like GateKeeper on OS X is. Safe store with the user having the power to decide if they leave the store or not.
nnutter··on OS X El Capitan on the Mac App Store
I can't verify but that would be awful it did as `/usr/local` is meant to be exactly not that.
nnutter··on Temporary Visas, Meant to Import Talent, Help Ship Jobs Abroad
Another thing to think about is how this affect families with one or more parents on H1B visas.

Another fun way to test is to press with your nail compared to pressing with your finger tip.

nnutter··on Toyota ad hijacks Siri to switch off iPhones while driving
My phone got part way through the process while watching the video. The lock screen prevented it from working.
nnutter··on If you've nothing to hide, you've got nothing to fear
Maybe in that future you'll be able to 3D everything but if we lose the right to bare arms don't you think that would limit the supply of arms when that time came?
nnutter··on Our beautiful fake histories
I think merge commits are sufficient but I thought a tool/script could help so I made [git-pinch][1]. It makes it easy to make merge commits without having to go through the trouble of making a branch. I wouldn't say others should necessarily use it but maybe it's a start. One thing merge commits add in complicating one's workflow is rebase requires options to preserve them and sometimes doesn't play nice.

nnutter··on Show HN: Highlander – Stop Overlapping Python Cron Jobs
Does that add value to stop overlapping from jobs?
nnutter··on Why I Defaulted on My Student Loans
What was wrong with the knowledge that an in-state college would have provided?
nnutter··on Why I Defaulted on My Student Loans
I only skimmed the article so I don't really deserve to comment but this was my impression. He took private loans to go (initially) to a private college then went to acquire more debt in graduate school and then thinks that it's the System's fault. He straight up says he thinks the affordable path that most of us take was beneath him and that he deserved to go to a private college.
nnutter··on John Nash Has Died
The metro buses I ride in to St. Louis do not have seat belts, do not have soft seats, and are not high but they drive on the freeway at 65+ MPH. It's even legit just to stand which I've done when the bus is crowded. None of this has ever felt safe to me but I assumed someone had determined that it was. For instance, I had not known how effective school busses' high, padded seats were at protecting its passengers until reading this thread and had assumed similarly that they didn't seem safe but must be.
nnutter··on Apple ResearchKit on GitHub
I'm laughing at the irony of my own comment.
nnutter··on Apple ResearchKit on GitHub
"Strongly Anti-Apple Bias here" was something you assumed that may or may not be correct.
