nnutter··on Meta takes down a critical video about meta AI Glasses after filming at Meta
I don't like it but it's totally normal, especially for youth, to have their cell phones out in locker rooms. Targeting only glasses with this concern is largely out of touch with current behavior.
nnutter··on Meta takes down a critical video about meta AI Glasses after filming at Meta
Which Meta Glasses try to counter by making it obvious when someone is recording with the recording light; arguably more obvious than cell phones.
nnutter··on Nobody pays for FOSS, we can force them to
Netscape basically died and was replaced by Firefox which doesn't/can't effectively charge users for the software so instead makes money by selling default search engine, etc.

Netscape existed as the internet was coming into existence. You used to have to buy a physical copy in the store to install it. People barely knew how to use their computers so the activation cost for bypassing their "pay wall" was high enough.

nnutter··on The Twelve-Factor App
Note that at the bottom of a page is a "Download ePub Book" link, <https://12factor.net/12factor.epub>.
nnutter··on Omacom Foundation funding hits $10M
I had to swap my Wi-Fi card and/or stop using the HDMI module in order to get my Framework 13 to stop locking up. I had to install an "obscure" app called `unpalm` to get my cursor to stop jumping random locations while typing. The fan randomly spins up to full speed which is ridiculously loud.

This is on a laptop whose manufacturer claims I am running a an officially supported OS.

I'll be a lot more likely to convince my family to switch to Linux if I could trust it for myself.

nnutter··on Green card seekers must leave U.S. to apply, Trump administration says
Looks like it applies to all visitors.

From https://www.uscis.gov/green-card/green-card-processes-and-pr...,

> Adjustment of status is the process that you can use to apply for lawful permanent resident status (also known as applying for a Green Card) when you are present in the United States. This means that you may get a Green Card without having to return to your home country to complete visa processing.

nnutter··on Texas woman arrested for Facebook post about town water quality
It seems suspicious to me that they do not include the "offending" Facebook post. It seems like this is it, and it seems completely in the realm of journalism,

nnutter··on Pope Leo XIV’s first encyclical Magnifica humanitas to be published May 25
On top of that, submissions are not supposed to modify titles. Original is "Pope Leo XIV’s first encyclical Magnifica humanitas to be published May 25".
nnutter··on Best Gas Masks
Yeah, this is quality content right here,

nnutter··on Are we all plagiarists now?
I'd highly recommend RiP!: A Remix Manifesto [Grokipedia](https://grokipedia.com/page/rip_a_remix_manifesto) [YouTube](https://youtu.be/quO_Dzm4rnk). It's been a long time since I watched it but I'll have to re-watch it. Keep in mind this came out almost 20 years ago, well before LLMs. I don't know where we'll land but humans are also remix machines, that's what creativity is, I think the beauty of what LLMs are is the first technology that has captured some essence of creativity. Of course, it's lacking direct emotion/sentiment but I also think people are failing to understand the role of the human in using the LLM. We are the final filter that is recognizing quality, projecting emotion/sentiment, etc.
nnutter··on Anthropic: Developing a Claude Code competitor using Claude Code is banned
Anthropic showed their true colors with their sloppy switch to using Claude Code for training data. They can absolutely do what they want but they have completely destroyed any reason for me to consider them fundamentally better than their competitors.
nnutter··on Resistance training load does not determine hypertrophy
Has anyone really ever walked to failure on a regular basis? I typically have to stop because of blisters not muscle failure. (The furthest I've done is 12 miles with +10% weight.)
nnutter··on You’re not burnt out, you’re existentially starving
It's so simple it's hard to really appreciate. Accepting what is and acknowledging that all you can do is your best and other mindful practices can really help. Easier said than done. I'd highly recommend the Healthy Minds app as a nice, no cost place to start learning. It grew out of a University of Wisconsin program and, as far as I know, is funded by donations and grants.

nnutter··on You’re not burnt out, you’re existentially starving
That's a pretty short period in the grand scheme of things. Before you know it they'll be driving and just a year or two from leaving the nest and you'll wish you could have had more time with them.
nnutter··on Get an AI code review in 10 seconds
My team uses draft PRs and goes through a process, including AI review, before removing the draft status thereby triggering any remaining human review.

A PR is also a decent UI for getting the feedback but especially so for documenting/discussing the AI review suggestions with the team, just like human review.

AI review is also not equivalent to linter and static checks. It can suggest practices appropriate for the language and appropriate for your code base. Like a lot of my AI experiences it's pretty hit or miss and it's non-deterministic but it doesn't have much cost to disregard the misses and I appreciate the hits.

nnutter··on Garmin beats Apple to market with satellite-connected smartwatch
I didn't realize this. Just verified on my Forerunner 965, if I put my phone in Airplane Mode, turn off Wi-Fi, leave Bluetooth on, then Garmin Connect disabled the sync button and says "No Internet connection".
nnutter··on Updates to Consumer Terms and Privacy Policy
This is disappointing. I thought Anthropic was a more privacy and safety focused company and so I had chosen to use Claude Code over their competition. Now they are less privacy focused than Gemini Code, which only does this for the free tier. My work was already providing GitHub Copilot but I was rooting for and supporting Anthropic. Now I'll either just use GitHub Copilot or Gemini Code both of which are still private for paid tiers.
nnutter··on Mexico to US livestock trade halted due to screwworm spread
I appreciate you citing the USAID funding but you seem to be trying to prove a point rather than get to the truth. Screwworm detection and prevention was not halted because of the USAID shutdown, USDA is actively working on it, one can see this by going to usda.gov and searching for "screwworm". I really appreciate ajmurmann's edit which acknowledges this.
nnutter··on Aspartame aggravates atherosclerosis through insulin-triggered inflammation
Diluted juice is still a useful suggestion as an alternative idea. I don’t get why people would down vote; that’s not what down vote is for. I like diluted juice quite a bit, 25-50% tastes fine, it’s akin to tea to me. It would be interesting if more beverage companies made a “add your own sweetener” version which is how unsweetened Kool-Aid drink mixes come. They have maltodextrin in them but say they are 0 calorie so I’m not sure if that means it’s a tiny amount or if it somehow gets away claiming zero calories. Just be aware Kool-Aid has sweetened versions as well. I still mostly drink water but some variety is nice.
nnutter··on Independent directors of 23andMe resign from board
I would say it's a little more murky than that. My anecdotal experience is in the context of Ancestry.com. Effectively, I might not consent to having my information shared but if my uncle, nephew, etc. does it is effectively still being shared.
nnutter··on jq 1.7
I just installed from Git the other day to use this feature. It’s very useful!
nnutter··on To opt out of Google Analytics you have to install a browser extension
Thank you, your comment helped me realize I was misinterpreting the article.
nnutter··on To opt out of Google Analytics you have to install a browser extension
After seeing tjpnz's comment and re-reading and reading the linked Mozilla announcement I was misinterpreting the article. I thought the article was just saying that they would continue to support Manifest v2 while adopting Google's Manifest v3 and then was saying Manifest v2 was going to be retired around a year later. However, the Mozilla announcement makes it clearer that they are implementing a fork of Google's Manifest v3.
nnutter··on To opt out of Google Analytics you have to install a browser extension
If only. Even just the headline makes it clear that Firefox has no leverage and are capitulating. Plus, that was just one example.
nnutter··on To opt out of Google Analytics you have to install a browser extension
Is Firefox really a solution anymore? Recent news about Firefox implementing [Manifest V3](https://9to5google.com/2021/05/28/firefox-manifest-v3-extens...) with "Manifest V3" appearing to be another attempt from Google to kneecap privacy extensions. I've been considering Brave which I had pretty much ignored but I honestly don't know who to trust. I think it's basically common knowledge we can't trust either Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge.
nnutter··on Grand jury subpoena for Signal user data, Central District of California
The ACLU is not what it once was. I will not donate to them. Even the EFF is growing questionable. I would definitely be curious what recommendations people have.
nnutter··on If I could bring one thing back to the internet it would be blogs (2020)
This is sort of a perfectionist perspective. Search engines use the same “gamification” and suffer the same problems you’re “predicting” but that doesn’t mean you don’t use search. It does mean it’s an arms race between the engine and the abusers. Weighting the agents instead of the content is no different than a popularity contest and is essentially an “appeal to authority” (or a lot like cancel culture). Just because someone has weird opinions about X doesn’t mean they can’t be brilliant about Y. If you ranked the content then their X content can sink and their Y content can rise. The problem with Twitter, etc. is that their incentives are not as aligned with their users’ goals as we would like. Probably the best part about blogging was that it wasn’t centralized and so wasn’t subject to one person’s definition of what those trade-offs should be. But, of course, now we’re trying to discuss fixing one of its weaknesses without losing too many of its strengths.
nnutter··on The 'megacomet' Bernardinelli-Bernstein is the find of a decade
Wikipedia more-or-less disagrees with you.
nnutter··on Hydrogen lobbyist quits, slams oil companies’ “false claims” about blue hydrogen
Physics Girl just made a video comparing hydrogen fuel cell and batteries. The weight to energy ratio makes it extremely clear to me that there is a place for both. As far as blue hydrogen vs. green hydrogen I don’t know the details.
