You generally don't "own" any software anyway. If you read the terms of use/service, you'll probably see it is simply a license from the actual owner.

(this is the same with movies and music btw)

nkristoffersen··on Show HN: Use Google Spreadsheet as a Database
Using google spreadsheets is a favorite of mine for prototypes. Especially without building out an admin app.
nkristoffersen··on Diskhash – Disk-based, persistent hash tables
Ok, I know this doesn't help the conversation, but I kept reading "Dickhash - Dick-based, persisted hash tables".

I was so confused.

nkristoffersen··on iOS 11 turns the iPad into a different machine
I would try spending time with an "average user". They do not use right click, nor keyboard shortcuts (which have also been around for ages). The average user is a basic user.
nkristoffersen··on Seattle's minimum wage may actually cost restaurant workers
Not a very viable solution: but you can apply for unemployment for those missing hours.
nkristoffersen··on Comparing Bandwidth Costs of Amazon, Google and Microsoft Cloud Computing
And people don't have to! People can self host instead :-)
nkristoffersen··on Top Static Site Generators of 2017
Static sites can live on S3 which means never worrying about your server crashing (except for that one time!). It's really a stress free way of handling sites :-)
nkristoffersen··on Ask HN: Starting a project today, which web framework would you use?
"Global" state should live on server. Only local state lives on client. I'm not sure how you are against react, angular, etc, since they only manage "local" state.
nkristoffersen··on “MP3 is dead” missed the real, much better story
I wouldn't be surprised if people prefer the low bitrate MP3 songs because that's how they've always heard it. Most people have never heard "good" audio.
nkristoffersen··on Root – Programmable bank account for software developers
With simple I get push notifications :-)
nkristoffersen··on Lilium – Electric vertical take-off and landing jet
It totally looks like a rendering.
nkristoffersen··on Facebook and the Cost of Monopoly
That article is cool! Was fun reading the comments on the just-announced iPod
nkristoffersen··on Juicero May Be Feeling the Squeeze
To be fair, plenty of printers are >$400
nkristoffersen··on Juicero May Be Feeling the Squeeze
That doesn't work in an office environment. The "K" coffee makers are a dream in breakrooms everywhere.
nkristoffersen··on Toshiba Pares Losses on Report of Apple Investing in Chips
The benchmark runs either single core or multi core. Is not a single core iPhone.
nkristoffersen··on What’s New in Bash/WSL and Windows Console
This statement made me giggle :-)
nkristoffersen··on Removing Home Internet Is the Most Productive Thing I've Done
As a digital nomad for the past several months, Facebook has been crucial in keeping in touch with friends and family back home, but also a perfect platform for staying in contact with new friends I make on my travels :-)
nkristoffersen··on Unkown Unknowns: Why you should release early
I'd say it's most important that you are solving an important problem. If you solve the problem well, no one will care if the product is ugly as shit. So long as you are the only or the best solution out there, it doesn't matter. :-)
nkristoffersen··on Dolphins' elaborate octopus-hunting strategy
And pretzels :-)
nkristoffersen··on Ask HN: What are you working on?
Project: Resume builder that is very opinionated. More focused on underemployed and unemployed. Folks who don't know how to sell themselves well. http://jobhero.org It is open sourced on github.

Problem: Need more (good) resume template designs. Want to move to react to learn react (angular 1.6 currently). Will move to JSON Resume standard for storing the resume. Will include a login provider instead of the current uuidv4 url as auth. Need to build a landing page and better on-boarding.

nkristoffersen··on Reddit’s April Fools’ experiment
Doesn't seem odd as the symbol was used for thousands of years before the nazis. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swastika
nkristoffersen··on Tim Berners-Lee wins Turing Award
I trust google reasonably well when they say they do not scan G Suite (paid) products for advertising. https://support.google.com/work/answer/6056650?hl=en
nkristoffersen··on Does CSS Grid Replace Flexbox?
I still use:

    .mytable{display:table}
    .myrow{display:table-row}
    .mycell{display:table-cell;vertical-align:middle;}
Simply because it's been the fastest and easiest way for me to vertically align stuff. Plus very backwards compatible. But I think I'm in the minority by not using the flexbox, etc.
nkristoffersen··on Android overtakes Windows as the internet’s most used operating system
Ironically the smartphone brings proper computing to everyone's fingertips. Hell I use my iPhone as a SSH terminal, or even a hotspot for my laptop when programming away from wifi.

The Information Age would be a dud without constant access to said information from anywhere for anyone.

The smartphone has also made it super easy for the average person to enjoy the fruits of programmers labor via app stores. Overall it has been a positive for the world.

nkristoffersen··on About the security content of iOS 10.3.1
on the topic of neverssl.com, just use example.com as it is not privately owned.
nkristoffersen··on Show HN: Is It Snappy? – Measure latency with your iPhone's 240 Hz camera
At least with my magic trackpad 2, when plugged into USB on my macbook pro, it communicates over USB instead of bluetooth. So worth using USB to cut some bluetooth lag out.
nkristoffersen··on Amazon Planning a Microsoft Office Killer
Google docs(drive) is already the online killer. So much better than office 365. I doubt amazon can outdo google here.
nkristoffersen··on Show HN: Is It Snappy? – Measure latency with your iPhone's 240 Hz camera
Very cool use of standard tech!
nkristoffersen··on Tesla Passes Ford by Market Value
Judging by the electric motor portion of the telsa manufacturing I would say it is much more simple than ICE https://youtu.be/AVCCroN7vS0

Also, I would argue electric motors have been around far longer than ICE because it is simpler. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electric_motor

nkristoffersen··on Post-FCC Privacy Rules, Should You VPN?
