njl··on Best-Selling Author Cancels California Affiliates
Momentum, I suspect.

At some point, increasing demands from local government are destined to provide a competitive advantage to businesses in other locales. The interesting question is how much of an advantage being located in Silicon Valley is, as compared to the cost. By their nature, bureaucracies tend to ratchet themselves larger and larger. At some point, the balance has to tip.

njl··on Google Reveals Its Stealth Social Project, Google+
No. Facebook created a collection of small social networks centered around existing real-world communities, then finally linked up all of those small social networks into a single, larger social network. This allowed them to reach saturation on a campus-by-campus basis, until they had finally progressed far enough to reach a tipping point in society at large.
njl··on Ticketmaster: Rocking The Most Hated Brand In America
That seems disingenuous. It is my understanding that the fees are kicked back to the venue owners only if they make TicketMaster their sole agent. If you sell tickets anywhere other than your box office or TicketMaster, you're not going to see a dime of those TicketMaster fees.
njl··on JQuery Mobile Beta 1 Released | jQuery Mobile
It's passable on my OG Droid. It was a weekend hack, and I need to revisit it with an eye towards speeding things up. Overuse of the Google Maps Javascript API is probably the source of a lot of the pokiness...
njl··on JQuery Mobile Beta 1 Released | jQuery Mobile
I built http://spotwoo.com in a couple of days using jQuery Mobile. Some weird gotchas, but I really enjoyed how quickly I could make something that looked decent. Congrats to the jQuery Mobile team.

I've got a couple of clients who've been mumbling about needing mobile apps, and I'm probably going to steer them to jQuery Mobile instead.

njl··on The 10:10 code - global position in ten characters
http://spotwoo.com/

My weekend project a couple of weeks ago, an attempt to solve this sort of problem. I was picking up a friend, and there was no easy way for his smart phone to tell me where he was. So I wrote a site to let 'im. I haven't finished testing it, but folks might be interested.

njl··on 1 in 5 APIs Say “Bye XML” - JSON gaining ground
I think JSON's power comes from the fact that it is a subset of a programming language. I organize data in arrays and hash tables (or objects, which can be implemented as hash tables), and that is what JSON provides.

I remember teaching classes in '99 where I needed to explain XML. I could do it in five minutes -- it's like HTML, but you get to make up tags that are case-sensitive. Every start tag needs to have an end tag, and attributes need to be quoted. Put this magic tag at the start, so parsers know it's XML. Here's the special case for a tag that closes itself.

Then what happened? Validation, the gigantic stack of useless WS-* protocols, XSLT, SOAP, horrific parser interfaces, and a whole slew of enterprise-y technologies that cause more problems than they solve. Like COBRA, Ada, and every other "enterprise" technology that was specified first and implemented later, all of the XML add-ons are nice in theory but completely suck to use.

XML has changed from a mildly verbose but eminently human-readable and machine-parsable data representation into a "technology" that has become over-specialized and covered with encrustations to the point that it is approaching regex's on the "now you have two problems" scale. JSON just gets back to a format that both the machine and I can read reliably and with ease.

njl··on Show HN: My startup: code4cheap.com, a code marketplace
Somebody on here built http://impossibility.org/, which I've found to be fantastic. You give it a word, it sticks other words around it. I found about half a dozen better names in just a few seconds worth of work.
njl··on Startups Open Sourced, 1 Week Later: $10,000+ in Revenue
I wouldn't read the emails after day three, I'd probably have them automatically filtered by day five.
njl··on Russia's Crime of the Century
This is the sort of case that should be Amnesty International's bread and butter. They were an amazing organization throughout the 70s and 80s, insisting that repressive regimes treat dissidents as humans, with dignity.

I think they lost their way after the end of the cold war. I didn't find any mention of Magnitsky on their website. It's rather depressing.

njl··on Perlin Noise
I wrote a rough-and-ready jQuery plugin that sticks Perlin noise in the background of an element. This is a great writeup, I wish I had it when I was figuring everything out.

njl··on Entreporn, The Fallacy That Wastes Your Life
The only VC was a guy named Marquardt. His firm had a 6.2% stake at the time of the IPO. I don't know when he invested.
njl··on C? Go? Cgo
I find Go's channels a much more natural way to express things than Javascript callbacks, so I've been using it where everybody else is using Node.
njl··on Djangy is shutting down
I wrote one of these a few months ago, and decided not to pursue it because I was one guy and just couldn't keep up on my own. I keep thinking I need to just shove what I wrote up on GitHub so people can at least look at it. It's a very interesting set of decisions you need to make.
njl··on Questionable Science Behind Academic Rankings
My last startup was in higher ed, and the stories about manipulating ranking are amazing. Everybody knows what goes into the rankings, and everybody manipulates the inputs.

As an example, one of the inputs is percentage of alumni who donate. So one large school has a gigantic push every year to get just one dollar from every alumni that they can. I actually sat in on a seminar where somebody from the university broke down all the bizarre things they were doing with admission, freshman retention, alumni relations, and so-on, just to game US News and World Reports.

njl··on No Life Insurance for Bull Riders
I like Cringely, but I thought he was a little hyperbolic on this one. Then I read this line:

"If an ETF is comprised of large cap stocks like Microsoft and Dell, that’s fine, but if the index is composed of smaller companies like the Russell 2000 index, those companies with very few shares outstanding are in for a wild ride. One ETF, IWM-Russell 2000, is the largest shareholder for more than 800 of the companies in that index."

That's messed up.

njl··on So I made something that's pretty stupid but had fun doing it
"Der Fuehrers Face" is a fascinating watch.

njl··on Structuring a "build this for us - for free" deal
Why would you do a deal with somebody who doesn't have any skin in the game? You're going to burn runway while you work on a product that you can't sell personally. They are going to have the right to sell it and not put any money in? I don't see any upside for you.

If I were in your position I would structure your take as a percentage of the gross sale price. They should pay you an advance[1]. That gives them some skin in the game, and keeps you from eating up your runway making money for somebody else.

[1] Be careful that things are constructed such that you keep the advance if they screw up in any way.

njl··on Ask HN: Review a startup - Grafighters
There is something really cool and compelling here, but I found it deeply disappointing that I wouldn't be controlling my drawings in battle. That makes it less of a game and more of an animated art gallery.
njl··on Heroku clone for Django?
The front end dispatches requests to a Varnish, which is in front of a router that queues up requests and sends them to available copies of the desired application. Persistence is Postgresql, and delayed and scheduled jobs are handled by celery over RabbitMQ.

My number one goal is to provide a deployment environment with as few additional restrictions on the developer as possible.

njl··on Heroku clone for Django?
I've been working on my Heroku for Django (or Python more generally) for a month or two now. It's good to see somebody else thinks this is a good idea.
njl··on Ask HN: please give feedback on Fashionista Pals
I like the idea, but you've got a lot of work ahead of you.

First and foremost, your design is lacking. I'm not good enough at design to explain exactly what's wrong, but I can kinda wave my arms and say it needs more texture, some richness. You need a design partner on this with some illustration skills, I think. The grey and orangey-pink isn't working for you. I think for a site like this, you need a bit of richness. A nice picture-frame for your users, without being too overt... If you can't get somebody with enough graphic skills to chip in, maybe you need to get starker. Black and white and one bold accent color, maybe.

Most of the links are broken when I'm not logged in. You need to be super-friendly to non-logged in users. Talk me into doing some work putting together some awesome catalog of what I like to wear, so I feel like I'd lose it if I don't create an account. Maybe you have that already, and the broken links are keeping me from seeing that.

If those are actual people using the site, and not models, you've got to have some of your less attractive and model-looking friends provide you the initial seed ;)

All that said, good luck! I've been pondering how there are possibilities for some sort of fashion site like this. I was thinking more along the lines of having people assemble clothes from Amazon and then running daily contests for best outfit... Buttons to share via facebook and twitter, all that stuff. I think what you've got here has a lot of potential! Sort of a wardrobe reddit...

njl··on Ask HN: What are you working on (hacking)?
My Django hosting service. I looked at Heroku and thought, "I want that for Python." Yesterday, I got most of the http request path finished. There is some node.js work left, and I still need to do some more work on Varnish. I'm hoping to get to the Postgresql stuff next week, then on to the website and API...
njl··on Ask HN: Will there ever be an eHarmony for finding friends?
More like, "Lets find interesting new people together."
njl··on Ask HN: Will there ever be an eHarmony for finding friends?
The algorithm is quite doable. A good-enough algorithm would be fine -- I have higher standards for those I exclusively date than for those I grab an occasional beer with. An opportunity to meet some new and interesting people would be great.

The viral loop probably lies in encouraging people to sign their existing friends up so that we can better classify the kind of people a user gets along with. I think people would use it, given that it had some mild game mechanics and some real social benefit. I'd push hard against making it in any way useful for dating and hookups at first, otherwise it would quickly get a stigma.

I had an interesting chat with some salesguys a couple of months ago, where we talked about an application that lets you say, "I'm in Denver on a layover for four hours. I'd love to grab a beer with somebody who sells into the enterprise software space and has some time to chat." That's one possible revenue source. Permission marketing is another one.

If I were to go the social-media-startup-route, this is the problem I find most interesting.

njl··on Charity Just Got More Daring
From the FAQ, "Our transaction fee is $0.99 + 9% of each payment."
njl··on How to Lose Time and Money
Frequently, when I'm uncertain or ambivalent about a binary decision, I'll flip a coin. When the coin lands, I feel that moment of happiness or annoyance at the result. I then use that feeling to make my decision. If I realize that I really don't care, I just go with the result of the coin flip.
njl··on Rethinking the Whiteboard
I've been pondering hanging sheets of glass on my walls. I've been taking notes on my bathroom mirror with a dry-erase marker for a while. The ability to get out real cleaning products and get the writing surface really, really clean is compelling.
njl··on Set a Rotating Picture of the Earth as Your Ubuntu Wallpaper
This is basically telling you to let somebody else run xplanet for you, then download the results every four hours. Pining for my xearth root window of yore, I wrote up how to run xplanet on your local machine, rendering out a nice new version every few seconds. This makes your desktop a useful global clock.

njl··on Ask HN: User Verification Suggestions?
I built this using twilio yesterday. It took maybe an hour, from research to code to commit.
