niea_11··on It's Not All In Your Head
I'm not a native english speaker. First time I encountered the word ecumenical in a tv show (Frasier) and understood it in the same way it was used by gp.

Maybe it's specific to american english.

I checked cambridge dictionary and it confirms that definition : tending to support and encourage unity among different religions

Merriam-webster has a similar definition : Worldwide or general in extent, influence, or application

Also collins dictionary : interreligious or interdenominational

https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/ecumenic...

I think @White_Wolf is talking about a study [0] done in 2020 by the university of Barcelona. But at the time the study was still in peer review phase.

The discovery of virus genome presence so early in Spain, if confirmed, would imply the disease may have appeared much earlier than the scientific community thought.

There was the potential for a false positive due to the virus’ similarities with other respiratory infections.

The research has been submitted for a peer review.

niea_11··on Apple’s Mistake
the gp comment doesn't say that OCR is used. It says that the devices have the capability. Which is the case for recent iPhones : https://9to5mac.com/2021/06/10/how-iphone-live-text-ocr-work...

There is so much rich information in your photos, from memorable places you’ve visited to handwritten family recipes. iOS 15 uses secure on-device intelligence to help you discover more in your photos, quickly find what you’re looking for, and relive special moments.

niea_11··on Everything has changed in iOS 14, but Jailbreak is eternal [pdf]
It's a comment from a correspondence between Donald E. Knuth and Peter van Emde Boas (meant as a joke I think).

You can find it in this pdf at the end of the 7th page : https://staff.fnwi.uva.nl/p.vanemdeboas/knuthnote.pdf

Knuth mentions it in his FAQ (at the end) : https://www-cs-faculty.stanford.edu/~knuth/faq.html

niea_11··on Notepad++ drops Bing after “tank man” censorship
As I said in another comment, for me it seems unlikely to be deliberate because of the bad publicity it will generate.

I'm not defending Microsoft. It just seemed to me a little bit weird to "punish" them for a one time mistake. But as another commenter showed me, this kind of stuff happened before.

Still, I'm finding it hard to believe it was deliberate. Mistakes happen. (maybe I'm naive :))

niea_11··on Notepad++ drops Bing after “tank man” censorship
Thanks for the link. I presumed it was a one time thing.

As other commenters said, may be it's intentional but the change was supposed to be visible only inside China and then someone messed up and it leaked to search results outside of China. (for example : a bad update to the rule censoring the subject inside china made it visible worldwide)

For me, it seems unlikely that they did it on purpose. not because they are good but because no company wants this kind of publicity.

niea_11··on Notepad++ drops Bing after “tank man” censorship
From the article linked in the commit :

Microsoft said the issue was "due to an accidental human error and we are actively working to resolve this."

It was not intentional and not a result of a request from China, so why ban the search engine?

Clang was created by Apple, LLVM wasn't.

From wikipedia:

The LLVM project started in 2000 at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign, under the direction of Vikram Adve and Chris Lattner. LLVM was originally developed as a research infrastructure to investigate dynamic compilation techniques for static and dynamic programming languages. LLVM was released under the University of Illinois/NCSA Open Source License, a permissive free software licence. In 2005, Apple Inc. hired Lattner and formed a team to work on the LLVM system for various uses within Apple's development systems. LLVM is an integral part of Apple's latest development tools for macOS and iOS.

Apple chose to develop a new compiler front end from scratch, supporting C, Objective-C and C++. This "clang" project was open-sourced in July 2007.

niea_11··on Send: A Fork of Mozilla's Firefox Send
I think this has something to do with the repo being a fork.

The parent repo doesn't have this issue. The "languages" list doesn't mention Freemarker on https://github.com/mozilla/send

niea_11··on Send: A Fork of Mozilla's Firefox Send
I can't find any freemarker templates on the project, but apparently it's using i18n files with an ".ftl" extension which is the default extension for freemarker templates.

I think it was more than one person, the original thread that started this is here : https://archive.md/YwxsS

I wish that people used energy like this to do something more useful (well, 'useful' from my POV).

niea_11··on Internet Archive Infrastructure
I agree that getting more people involved (by crowdsourcing or other ways) will be beneficial to the project. But it'll depend on how the effort will be organized.

My experience with the website is that the original uploader can edit some part of the "metadata" (not all) of the uploaded document like title, description, topics/tags ..., but they can't move it to a different collection (initially the document is uploaded the "community" collection).

If they want to put it in a different collection they have to contact archive.org's staff.

Sometimes the staff notice the new files and move them to the correct collection or even create a new one for them (the latter case happened to me).

niea_11··on Publisher Nacon Cracked and Pirated Our Game: The Sinking City
Still, the court ordered frogwares to give the binaries to Nacon. They didn't give permission to Nacon to download and patch a binary, from another distributor, which is probably provided under a EULA that forbids what they did.
niea_11··on Internet Archive Infrastructure
To be fair the linked document was uploaded just today to a collection that seems be considered a "waystation" collection so probably the document will be moved later to a permanent collection.

And I think they have bots that process the uploaded documents to do OCR and create previews.

I made a comment about this here with the relevent part of the decision in french: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=26314681

Edit:

The relevant part in french:

Sur la livraison des formats manquants :

— ordonner à Frogwares Ireland de lui livrer les deux masters du jeu 'The Sinking city’ sur format PC DRM Free et Steam sous astreinte de 50.000 euros par jour de retard à compter du 5 ème jour suivant la notification par e-mail de la décision à intervenir

niea_11··on Publisher Nacon Cracked and Pirated Our Game: The Sinking City
I don't think the court ordered them to deliver the source code.

I didn't read the full decision linked by @ernesth, but this part says that they have to deliver two "masters", one drm free and one for Steam.

I think the meaning of master in this case is Gold Master : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_release_life_cycle#RT...

niea_11··on In two incidents, F-16 aviators were rendered unconscious, but saved by software
I agree. The tv series is better because with 50+ episodes, the creator(s) were able to present a more detailed version of the future described in the movies (I'm talking about the first one from 1995 and Innocence).
niea_11··on In two incidents, F-16 aviators were rendered unconscious, but saved by software
This reminds me of an episode of Ghost in the shell (the serie, season 2 episode 4).

from the description of the episode:

the pilot of the helicopter suffers a massive heart attack, and the Jigabachi begins to spin out of control. The on-board Artificial Intelligence gets the helicopter back under control, and the military officers running the drill decide to abort it out of concern for the safety of their troops. However, the AI aboard the Jigabachi refuses to acknowledge the order to return to its parent JMSDF aircraft carrier. Acting on the assumption that the chopper is under attack, the AI overrides the flight controls of other armed Jigabachi aircraft, an air tanker from the carrier, and several nearby military bases, ordering these units into a tight defence formation in the heart of the Niihama Refugee Residential District.
