Seems like a better investment, market can't be that deep for $55k iphones.
nicpottier··on 200-year old heat pump technology is back
If you are oversized you may also run into problems of short cycling in warm weather, where you won't be able to dehumidify because it will be cooling too quickly. Who installed your system, they should be on the hook to fix it.

nicpottier··on How a heat pump works
This is FUD. I live in climate zone 5 in a 100 year old house that has high heating demands and our air source heat pump has been awesome, even when it dipped into the negatives briefly this year. Our heat pump is over 100% efficient down to 0F.
nicpottier··on Show HN: I made a tool that turns screenshots into dramatically angled photos
Are you new here? Perhaps I can introduce you to one of our heros, patio11 who made an entire business out of making bingo cards. I don't particularly think this is a great business but my gosh, this is the right audience to "show it off"
nicpottier··on Ask HN: Employers, why do you want us back in the office?
Live in a city, get a bike, take a job you can bike to.
nicpottier··on Ask HN: Employers, why do you want us back in the office?
What? This is a crazy anecdote. I believe you but understand that's not the norm. I have had many and know if others having many as well.

Companies that are all remote will survive but they won't thrive and in a competitive market will lose to those that are in person.

I say that after running a company that was one or the other at various times. The periods when we were all in person (constantly, not as a special event) is when real innovative progress was made.

I really like the LilyGo boards. This one in particular is awesome if you aren't looking for battery power: https://www.amazon.com/LILYGO%C2%AE-T-Display-RP2040-Raspber...
nicpottier··on Starting February 9, we will no longer support free access to the Twitter API
If I recall the Matt Levine newsletter correctly the banks have already discounted the debt so I would think they'd be happy to sell it for less than the original $ value, either to Musk or Musk associates.
nicpottier··on Ask HN: Has anyone successfully started their career over in their 30s?
You spent your 20s cutting your teeth on a failed startup. Lots and lots of people do that and it's a perfectly acceptable thing to have on a resume. I know people who have started in their 30s from never having programmed professionally at all and are now working at a FAANG company. The world is your oyster, go get it.
nicpottier··on The Pretty Good House

nicpottier··on US companies are producing heat pumps that work below -20F
$50k in equipment? At what scale are we talking. I got a Mitsubishi heat pump with three heads installed for less than $15k and it works well into the negatives.
nicpottier··on More developers use Linux than Mac, according to 2022 StackOverflow survey
This is a weird but so so killer feature to me. Our lives are constantly about text editing in one way or another, having all the usual ways of navigating text available across the entire OS is the best feature of all.
nicpottier··on Binance caught commingling funds between US and international exchanges
Disagree. Coinbase has been around forever and was born out of the collapse of MtGox and people wanting some adults to run an exchange. I would not be surprised at all if Binance is a house of cards, I would be very surprised if Coinbase was.
nicpottier··on SBF Written Testimony Notes 12/12/2022
The lengths he does to blame CZ and Ray is pretty telling. He really seems to still be in massive denial. The idea that he could still raise billions to make customers whole and that this pesky chapter 11 technicality is getting in the way also seems insane.

This reads as if he wrote this himself with no legal supervision. Is he under oath with these statements?

nicpottier··on Beyond Meat is struggling, and the plant-based meat industry worries
I disagree. I much prefer a Beyond pattie to more traditional veggie options.

It is quite literally a matter of taste though, so you aren't wrong, but your perspective is just your own.

nicpottier··on Beyond Meat is struggling, and the plant-based meat industry worries
I mostly avoid meat for environmental reasons rather than health reasons. So Impossible and Beyond are nice alternatives. you shouldn't be eating hamburgers super regularly either way so the healthiness of alternatives really doesn't matter to me.
nicpottier··on The good delusion: has effective altruism broken bad?
This pretty much hits it on the nose for me. I think with a little extra spice of thinking you know best and experts in the field are dumb, aka, white savior complex.
nicpottier··on What Happened at Alameda Research
Yearly, not monthly.
nicpottier··on The Community Corrosive Effects of CLAs (2021)
I think this often cuts both ways and license changes are a last resort by project owners trying to find a sustainable path forward. Sentry being an example of this. Some (most?) OS projects have some company/organization behind them that is doing most of the work, I have no problem signing a CLA if that helps them continuing to exist by relicensing my contribution in some way. At least not if my contributions are pretty small scale, which I think most outside contributions are.

nicpottier··on I want an iPhone Mini-sized Android phone
Snag up a lightly used Pixel 5 while you can. You get 5G and it is basically the same form factor, just a bit better all around. (I've had both and the Pixel5 is a step up for sure)
nicpottier··on I want an iPhone Mini-sized Android phone
Pixel 5 has great battery life. Note that none of the requirements are that it is some game machine or anything. Even less than top-tier chipsets are just fine for me. I just want a good camera in a pocketable form factor.
nicpottier··on Tell HN: 3 years of running a minimal blogging platform
Check out posthaven as another interesting option. Their mission is basically just to be around forever at $5/mo. They basically haven't added new features in years but that's the point.
nicpottier··on Reducing CO2 emissions by targeting the world's hyper-polluting power plants
It's not an either OR, it's an AND.
nicpottier··on El Salvador makes Bitcoin legal tender
My understanding is basically there's routing and there will be centralization of channels to some extent. One way to think of LN is that it is a wallet/debit card of sorts. You transfer some amount of BTC to a Lightning channel and that becomes your wallet. You can transact with that wallet quickly/cheaply but there's always the ability for that channel to be closed and put back on the chain with the last balance in the case of disputes etc..

But as you said, coffee shop needs some path to you to make that feasible. So then you get BTCVisa (c) or whatever, which is a channel provider that has built a network of channels open with lots of vendors. If you open a channel with them then you get to benefit from getting to use the wallet you already have. There is cross-channel routing of course so maybe that doesn't happen but it seems like a natural result.

LN is neat in concept, but I'm not sure I really see the point compared to Bitcoin cash or the like that just say scale on chain. I guess we'll see.

nicpottier··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (June 2021)
Nyaruka / TextIt | Senior Dev / Dev Lead / Full Stack / Frontend | Remote | Full time, Contract

Nyaruka is looking for a senior dev lead to join our small remote team. We've built a compelling platform (https://textit.com) used to build interactive messaging bots. We work primarily with large NGO's such as UNICEF but also support lots of private customers around the word and US based non profits like ResistBot. We are profitable and privately held without investors.

We are looking for a Senior Engineer who could work themselves into a dev leadership position, would really like someone who has leadership experience in a small business before. Our stack is Django for the web, React/Web Components for the UI and Golang for the services. We all work remotely and value quality of life, flexibility and independence.

We are a team of five and our organization is flat and largely self guided. 99% of the work we do is Open Source, we believe strongly on working on technology that is used to better the world.

If you are interested send your resume / github to jobs@nyaruka.com

nicpottier··on Why did bar ends go away from mountain bikes?
Single front chainrings came about from having wider and wider ranges on the rear and suspension designs being made possible by ditching the front derailleur. Yes, there's some top end lost but the range is more the same than different than doubles or even triples.

As someone who has been mountain biking for over 25 years I would say the statement that uphill has been de-emphasized over downhill is absolutely correct. Enduro racing (where the uphills aren't even timed) is a nice example of that.
