nicolaslem··on A DisplayPort Port That You Can Plug HDMI into [video]
Note that this is changing fast as laptops get rid of all ports in favor of USB-C which can carry DisplayPort. In practice many laptops sold today do not support HDMI but support DisplayPort albeit through a different connector.
nicolaslem··on Ask HN: Why does it seem hard to buy an ONT for fiber?
The same can be said of cellular networks where in most part of the world connecting your own equipment is accepted and expected.
nicolaslem··on Ask HN: Why does it seem hard to buy an ONT for fiber?
> main reason being I don't trust my ISP to handle my personal information with discretion.

Surely if the ISP wanted to do something nefarious, they could do it in the next equipment in line that doesn't sit in the customer's house. Anything before the customer's own router is the Internet where nothing should be trusted. Whether the modem belongs to the customer or the ISP doesn't really change that.

Lighting using using LEDs vs incandescent bulbs: streets and buildings are not ten times brighter than a couple of decades ago.
nicolaslem··on Starlink terminal revision 4: overview and tests
Sure on paper they are different things and they both involve different parties but in practice both are accepted everywhere. I never had a credit card but I have been using debit cards for decades and only twice an actual credit card was required: for booking a hotel abroad and for renting a car abroad.
nicolaslem··on Show HN: Sqlbind a Python library to compose raw SQL
Isn't using f-strings to build SQL queries a large footgun? I can imagine a junior developer introducing a SQL injection by not completely grasping the sqlbind API.

Using the quickstart example, visually both lines are very similar and both are functional, but one of them may introduce a SQL injection:

    sql = f'SELECT * FROM table WHERE field1 = {q/value1} AND field2 > {q/value2}'
    sql = f'SELECT * FROM table WHERE field1 = {value1} AND field2 > {value2}'
nicolaslem··on AMD Zen 5 CPUs Reportedly Made on TSMC's 3nm Process, Mass Production in Q3
You will likely have to wait 18 months more. Typically AMD mobile chips get announced in winter and are widely available in laptops by summer.

Proprietary wireless dongles for keyboards and mice are often not Bluetooth.
nicolaslem··on AMD Unveils AMD Radeon RX 7600 XT Graphics Card
GP was not suggesting playing with voltages but simply power limiting the card, which tends to be easier to do and doesn't affect stability but has a performance hit.

> My Xbox controller worked, then suddenly stopped working. I've been using PS controller instead which works great, but would vastly prefer the Xbox one.

If you mean specifically using Steam on Linux, you may need to add some udev rules for accessing the controller: https://codeberg.org/fabiscafe/game-devices-udev

nicolaslem··on Most 16-year-olds don't have servers in their rooms
I don't know about the prohibited part but that's exactly how LinkedIn got hacked.

See https://darknetdiaries.com/transcript/86/ for details.

nicolaslem··on An update on HDR and color management in KWin
It is starting to be the default for new devices. I think that HDR is here to stay, not because it's ground breaking but because it is easy to implement with new display technologies like OLED or microLED. These technologies provide much better contrast and color reproduction, the HDR part is just the cherry on the top.

One nice side effect of HDR is that it forces the industry to tackle color management head first. This means going beyond sRGB as the default and often only option that had been the norm for decades.

nicolaslem··on My cat water fountain comes with a spicy USB power adapter
I did but unfortunately it quickly turned into all parties involved blaming each other (it's your utility, it's your installation...) and it got nowhere. For the past year it's been much more stable than before so I don't worry too much about it.
nicolaslem··on My cat water fountain comes with a spicy USB power adapter
That's the reading from my UPS, I believe it's RMS since it reads 234 V currently.
nicolaslem··on My cat water fountain comes with a spicy USB power adapter
From my experience appliances tolerate a wide range of voltages. The outlets in my house routinely deviate from the standard 230V, with the lowest I have seen at 170V and highest at about 260V. I have not had any appliance malfunction.

Edit: I am not advising anyone to deliberately do stupid things, simply mentioning that from my experience the builtin margin is fairly large.

nicolaslem··on AMD's New Threadripper Chips Have a Hidden Fuse That Blows When Overclocking
Similar e-fuses are common for preventing downgrading firmware, especially on consoles. Nintendo was famously running out of e-fuses to blow on the Switch because of the many vulnerabilities the console had.

Point being that these e-fuses don't blow up randomly by themselves.

nicolaslem··on AMD's New Threadripper Chips Have a Hidden Fuse That Blows When Overclocking
Undervolting (removing the safety margin put in place for binning) and removing power limits is where the gains are today. Ryzen 5000 could get some pretty nice multicore gains by undervolting using PBO2.
nicolaslem··on Cortex A57, Nintendo Switch's CPU
> Where else do you get 64 GBs of unified memory attached to a somewhat capable GPU?

AMD has many APUs with decent GPUs, you won't run CUDA on them but the graphics capabilities are there.

nicolaslem··on HP exec says quiet part out loud when it comes to locking in print customers
I have a cheap HP combo printer/scanner connected to a Raspberry Pi and the experience is great: printing and scanning just works using the native apps on all our devices.

It took me a couple of hours to setup, but it's been rock solid since.

nicolaslem··on Saving CO2 using location and time shifting in Azure
It is probably not very impactful alone, however Apple is very good at setting trends that everyone else wants to copy, for better or for worse (TouchID, the notch...). Apply the same heuristic to bigger appliances, cars or servers as in the article and it starts to be impactful.

nicolaslem··on Ubuntu squeezes more performance than Windows 11 on new AMD Zen 4 Threadripper
We are at a stage where games built for Windows actually run better on Linux so this argument will probably not be relevant for too long anymore.

Because I assume that Apple put a fairly low limit on the number of accounts that can be tied to a single computer.
nicolaslem··on Nothing's iMessage app was a security catastrophe, taken down in 24 hours
Does anyone know how many users a single Mac Mini handles? While I admire the hacker mindset, this solution seems incredibly wasteful so I am curious of its carbon footprint.
