nickspacek··on Zero-Downtime Hetzner Deploys with Ansible
Hetzner is great, but recently ran into an issue where their (newly introduced?) cloud security just spins instead of ever progressing to the login prompt on Mull and Librewolf. I assume because it's detecting something it doesn't like.

When I reported it to the support, I was first told to visit the account login screen at the provided URL. To which I responded that, yes, that was what I was trying to do but could not reach. Next I was asked to reset my password; I did so, as that page is not protected by the same security challenge. Alas no change. Finally, it was suggested that I reset my router. Since it was the middle of the day with many other users on my network, I asked whether this was to see if IP blocking was in place. They said yes. Rebooting the router didn't change anything. I switched browsers, and it immediately worked.

So if anyone at Hetzner is listening, maybe have a look at your login protection and consider whether there is an alternative way to block bots (or whatever) without impacting legitimate customers.

What I find very cool is that it's extracting scenes from the running game and then projecting them into the VR space, allowing the scenes to be panned/rotated in a way that isn't possible in the original game.

If you haven't watched the video, check it out; my assumption from just reading explanations here was that it was just projecting a facade of the emulated device and its normal rendering of the game into VR.

Mine just works with Wireguard. I took a couple extra steps to make it convenient:

1. Public DNS entry gives jump box IP. With some http forwarding the Letsencrypt flow initiated from the internal Jellyfin server.

2. My Wireguard server (running on the jump box) runs dnsmasq and answers DNS queries for wireguard clients with the wireguard IP for the Jellyfin server.

3. DNS server on the home network gives those internal clients the local IP.

Works great now; obviously not plug and play but I had fun setting it up.

nickspacek··on Reversing into a car park safer, more efficient for driver and pedestrians
One of our local parks intentionally has Back-In Angled Parking on its adjacent one-way street. Granted, it is in a residential, traffic-calmed area with speedbumps that is primarily for residents and park-users and not intended to be used to transit the area.
nickspacek··on Wideboard: Render _all_ of Linux's source code in a browser tab via WebGL
It could be a really interesting way to visualize code. I could imagine using profiler output to influence the rendering of different code. Similarly, an interactive debugger view that showed e.g. objects being created, or memory usage.
nickspacek··on Hyperpaper Planner: fully interlinked dayplanner for e-ink tablets
This is great; I had a thought that something similarly writable on tablets, but designed for tabletop RPGs would be great. The best of both worlds.

I use 5e Companion App on my phone, and find the interface is great. I have a Boox Note that I would love to have a way of tracking dynamic info (like spells) with the ability to write or erase overtop for things like notes, or maybe even HP...

I'm not exactly sure how it would work, but does anyone know if there is something like this out there? Some aspects could be handled through PDF links I suppose.

nickspacek··on Even after $100B, self-driving cars are going nowhere
When I was recently in SF, one early morning I came across a Cruise vehicle on a one way street at a 30 degree angle blocking traffic (of which there was very little at the time). Another was pulling up behind it (maintenance vehicle?). Not sure what the story was with it.

I have a Boox that I'm quite happy with. It's quite pleasant to write on, and the battery lasts a considerable amount of time. The calibration seems to sometimes go off slightly, but I'm still not sure if that is the device's issue, the pen, or myself.

It's not the most hackable, but there are some dedicated folks hacking at the Amazfit watches. I have the original Bip, which has a ridiculous battery life (30+ days easily) and GPS. The GPS will run your battery down with extensive use, but if I'm running a few times a week it'll still go 2 weeks.

It isn't that powerful, and I wish it had a second physical button. I haven't explored the mods very much because it does what I need it to do, but the scene has the feel of the early Xbox hacking scene, to me at least.

There's this watch which appears to be heavily inspired from the Amazfit Bip: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/gfw/banglejs-2-the-open...

nickspacek··on Convoy Crackdown – power to freeze bank accounts without trial or legal recourse
Tweeted this the other day:

Maybe it's just me, but it doesn't seem like that much to require that:

> A person must not participate in a public assembly that may reasonably be expected to lead to a breach of the peace by: > > (a) the serious disruption of the movement of persons or goods or the serious interference with trade; > (b) the interference with the functioning of critical infrastructure; or > (c) the support of the threat or use of acts of serious violence against persons or property.

I think it's possible to respect that approach, but still be mad as hell and get your point across.

This isn't the convenient answer we want, but I keep thinking that personally I should invest in a vehicle that suits 90% of my transportation needs, and plan to rent for the other 10%. It is likely the better financial approach, although it's definitely not a silver bullet.
nickspacek··on Ivermectin: Much More Than You Wanted to Know
Great point. Perhaps the idea is that neither you nor the avg doc can conclude much from reading 10 studies. Therefore, defer to the experts?

As to why the COVID situation is different, presumably because prostate cancer screening affects only you (and perhaps your family in the case of a true/false positive/negative diagnosis), and COVID represents a threat to everyone around you, and everyone around them, etc.

In the province of New Brunswick, Canada, many many homes have been (and still are) using electric baseboard heating even in midst of winter, often with less than ideal insulation in the house. Upgrading to a ductless/mini-split heat pump is seen as a pretty good option to reduce the electrical grid's load from heating, so much so that rebates have been offered by the government-owned electrical utility for people to upgrade.

Actually they just said that Java's server-side stack is overengineered, and that Spring/Spring Boot hides that complexity. I think that is mostly true.
