newsbinator··on Ask HN: Am I the only one baffled by the long term usage of Twitter?
I have exactly the same experience and I am baffled how people get value from Twitter. I keep creating an account, going in, getting baffled, then leaving.

Why are so many smart and insightful people on Twitter? Because it's easier than blogging or microblogging? I see links to their interesting threads referenced on Reddit or HN and I follow those links, but I can't bring myself to care enough about Twitter (or Nitter) to actively follow anyone.

I guess if something is valuable enough on Twitter I'll hear about it elsewhere. Not sure if that approach holds up.

I'm looking forward to whatever replaces Twitter. I've been waiting for that thing for about a decade.

newsbinator··on Tell HN: Airbnb just stole me 5 minutes of my time adding dices
4 times out of 5 I find the price on booking.com to be 20% ~ 40% cheaper than the price on the place’s own website. Even when I call them for a price like booking.com (because I hate giving Booking my money), the place says the best price is on Booking and I should book there.
newsbinator··on Titanium dioxide particles frequently present in face masks
Which brand masks were tested? They're labeled in the paper Mask1, Mask2, etc
newsbinator··on Is flagging an abuse of the moderation process?
I would downvote a one-word comment like "No." because this class of comment does nothing to further discussion.

If it were "No, and here's why" then I'd upvote it instead.

newsbinator··on Ask HN: If you're in a 100% remote role, should you turn your camera on?
This is commonly cited, but I wonder if anybody has studied how much communication happens by voice and screenshare, and whether there's a net loss compared to face-to-face.

I get all my work communication done through voice and shared files. Am I missing information that would otherwise be encoded in implicit facial expressions? Or in the absence of faces, is that being conveyed to me anyway, through voice and explicit verbal means?

newsbinator··on Ask HN: If you're in a 100% remote role, should you turn your camera on?
I don't like being on camera and I'd wager many (if not most) people don't. We do it because we have to, not because we want to.

And I don't have to because I don't work with clients or take roles in which me being on camera for more than 5 minutes during the entire duration of the role is a requirement.

Between voice and screen sharing, we can handle all business without monitoring each other's 2-dimensional faces.

newsbinator··on Tell HN: Reddit accounts cancellation/suspension caused by VPN usage
How incredibly frustrating! I empathize. You're not the only one who has experienced this sort of Kafkaesque behavior from mods on Reddit, where no matter what you explain, no matter what supporting evidence you provide, no matter what reality is, you will be willfully misread in order to justify a case against you.
newsbinator··on Tell HN: Reddit accounts cancellation/suspension caused by VPN usage
I got banned from /r/CanadaCoronavirus for saying "we are currently experimenting to learn how many boosters are needed. My rabies shots required 5 injections at specific intervals.".

They banned me for saying that vaccines are experimental.

I contacted the head mod and explained that I did not say and do not think the vaccines are "experimental".

They ignored my message for a week then upheld the ban, saying "the vaccines are not experimental". I guess it was my time to be shown the door and nothing I said after that mattered.

They are also the mod of /r/AskReddit and /r/Covid19

newsbinator··on Names of Canada truck convoy donors leaked after reported hack
> I've said this before. There's a strong libertarian bent to HN and I'm not surprised if there's a large contingent of this site that actively supports the convoy. There's people here that are strong supports of Peter Thiel, if that's any indication of where their sympathies lie.

To me the political bent of HN isn't relevant when reading a comment. I'd rather take each comment on its own merits, without guessing or assuming what the ideology of the commenter would have to be.

I recently lived in a country in which wearing the wrong color socks is grounds for instant prison, so I prefer when my government's monopoly on violence errs on the side of restraint, as in the case of these protestors.

Should individual protestors get shut down when they harass mask-wearing doctors or honk horns in the middle of the night? Obviously.

But there is some fuzzy line in which we let protestors do otherwise illegal or fineable things that we don't let individuals do.

I could be convinced that skin color is a factor as you mentioned, but at the moment I have no idea.

newsbinator··on Show HN: Free and open-source illustrations for your projects
Like another commenter said, it's awful: they're visually lifeless and they don't add value in terms of being illustrative of the idea their associated text block is meant to convey, nor do they catch the eye in the first place.

You might as well have a lorem-ipsum cat picture in their place, since it has about the same utility.

newsbinator··on Covid-19 Is over (If You’re Rich)
> Although short-haul private flights on a small, four-person jet can start at $6,000 to $7,000 one way, a transatlantic flight on a larger, 12-person aircraft can go for as much as $120,000 one way.
newsbinator··on Nearly a third of TV ads play to empty rooms
We'll need a pi-hole like device, which does presence-detection to cut off electricity to the TV when you're not in the room, assuming that remains legal.

The other day at midnight I was woken up by an Amber Alert for a somewhat nearby town. It's not possible to disable these notifications in this country, as far as I know.

newsbinator··on Blade Runner 2099 Sequel Series Coming from Ridley Scott
Yeah, the last quarter or last third of Season 1 was a drop in story quality. But Season 2 has picked up and gotten good again.

One thing I'm enjoying, unlike in 90s sci fi, is when the characters call out obvious threats and take them as a given, like "that creature has probably been brain chipped and given as a tool to track you".

Indeed, there is no free lunch in dystopia land, whereas 90s sci fi would have the otherwise smart characters be incredibly dumb in situations like this.

newsbinator··on Show HN: LiveViewJS – TypeScript back end for LiveView Apps (Phoenix LiveView)
The difference is that Ice-Nine turns all water into Ice-Nine. Whereas more javascript projects doesn't mean fewer not-javascript projects (except inasmuch as people who like javascript are busy doing javascript things instead of other things).
newsbinator··on Blade Runner 2099 Sequel Series Coming from Ridley Scott
I like Raised by Wolves. A lot of it is "here's another unrealistic coincidence" and "that character has a lot of plot armor", but I'm hoping it's because the overarching mystery story makes it that way. I'll be disappointed if this turns out to be sloppy writing.

Certainly a chunk of the writing so far is cliche. I'm pretty sure I saw parts of this show a dozen times in various 90s shows and 50s/60s/70s books. Anybody remember Earth 2?

Although the child actors are quite bad at acting, the adults largely make up for it.

The environment does feel like a Star Trek jungle set, where it's hard to suspend disbelief that it's not just a few hundred square meter outdoor stage in South Africa. But we've been suspending disbelief on low res sci fi shows for years, so long as the story is good, and even when the writing is bad.

For instance Babylon 5 is one of my all time favorites and the writing is bad and the acting is worse. A couple actors elevate and save it (Peter Jurasik, Andreas Katsulas, Ed Wasser, Walter Koenig). But what really saves it is story: not effects, not dialog, not delivery, just compelling world-building story.

I'm hoping Raised by Wolves turns into something great, but so far as it's at least good, I'm along for the ride.

newsbinator··on I asked GPT-NeoX-20B a hundred arithmetic questions
That would be AGI by another name.
newsbinator··on I asked GPT-NeoX-20B a hundred arithmetic questions
If you want to get to AGI, it doesn't really have to be a remote possibility with current techniques.

The only thing current techniques would have to do is build something that improves itself intelligently enough.

Then the next iteration and the next, until you get to an iteration in which AGI is a remote possibility with current techniques and implementations.

We're currently far from AGI, but I'm not sure we're far from a thing that can make a thing that makes a thing that makes something like AGI.

newsbinator··on Ask HN: What should I do with my unused 1Gig internet?
Isn't one (or more?) of the alt cryptocurrencies about distributed bandwidth sharing? I recall something using that combo of buzzwords from 2018 or so, but I can't think of specifics.
newsbinator··on Ask HN: Is your M1 getting sluggish?
My 2015 13" MacBook Pro became unusable due to thermal throttling. It regularly heats up from 60º cold boot to 100º seemingly at random. Is it VS Code? A bunch of open tabs? Running the Firebase emulator? I haven't been able to pin down why it gets so hot while doing little or why it sometimes doesn't get very hot while doing a lot.
newsbinator··on How illiterate people use their mobile phones (2012)
Anybody have ideas on why the age divide on expectation + exploration vs. memorization seems so stark?

In my experience the top predictor of whether a person can use a computer to do what they intended to do is age. Not IQ, not other mechanical or technical competence, not education, not cultural background, not linguistic aptitude, not reading speed, not creativity, not engineering or product design experience... mainly age.

(with outliers of course)

newsbinator··on How illiterate people use their mobile phones (2012)
> The speed at which they traversed the phone menus was the same as for literate people. We often had to ask our interviewees to slow down when they were showing us how they performed certain tasks on their phones. They mastered important functionality through rote learning: “After I have clicked on this icon I need to go down twice and then – click! - I’m done.” This was the same technique that they used to learn how to operate other important digital interfaces such as ATMs and game consoles. Family or friends assisted during the memorization phase and they repeated the procedures in their presence as many times as needed.

Please include esomeprazole. I find the timing before first meal is very important.

newsbinator··on Why comedians stopped being funny
The article doesn't pay off the title.

It doesn't tell us why comedians stopped being funny, or even that comedians stopped being funny: merely that comedians are sometimes funny and sometimes serious, and they move from one to the other often without pausing to announce the shift.

newsbinator··on Font Awesome v6.0.0 Released

newsbinator··on Reasons to Abandon Spotify That Have Nothing to Do with Joe Rogan
I don't listen to billions of musicians: I listen to hundreds of musicians. I don't go to concerts or see live music performed.

Spotify's owners have made it easy for me to listen to those hundreds I like. I don't get any value at all from the creation of those billions I don't listen to. I get daily value from the creation of Spotify's owners.
