Why comedians stopped being funny

Real comedy is moral courage. The rest is entertainment. It's a competence, and I'm not sure one can meaningfully criticize comedy without demonstrating some capability in it first. I'd ignore an article like this, but when a guy who describes himself as an author, journalist, and columnist (yet still, not a writer) affects concern about comedians and comedy, I'd wonder if this is the best that the political forces aligned against anything that bruises their increasingly implausible narratives can do.

The article doesn't pay off the title.

It doesn't tell us why comedians stopped being funny, or even that comedians stopped being funny: merely that comedians are sometimes funny and sometimes serious, and they move from one to the other often without pausing to announce the shift.
