newnewpdroon Tsundoku

Somewhat related; when a friend bought his first home, he filled bookshelves in the living room with books that were popular in his circles as part of decorating and a means of social manipulation.

He never had and likely never will read any of them, it was primarily an attempt to buy social favor with guests. He'd just say he had a poor memory for books he read long ago whenever someone tried discussing them at a house party.

It was unnerving how effective this was.

newnewpdroon Essential shutting down after failing to launch ‘GEM’ smartphone

This is a big part of why it's so important we support efforts like the pine phone and librem 5.

When these companies go belly up the perfectly functional devices we own shouldn't become effectively unservicable.

newnewpdroon Apple engineer killed in Tesla crash had previously complained about autopilot

How many drivers didn't hit the same barrier that year?

It just seems like an edge case that's catching inattentive drivers off guard, which IMHO is a category including Tesla's on autopilot. And it seems Tesla agrees here; they require drivers pay attention when using Autopilot. If your vehicle runs into a barrier on Autopilot, you weren't paying attention.

newnewpdroon Stage is a minimalistic 2D, cross-platform HTML5 game engine

Agreed, this is basically just a glorified draw list, nowhere near a "game engine".

Is there even a spatial index for accelerating collision detection?

newnewpdroon USB armory: an open-source hardware design, flash-drive sized computer

I have a bricked mk1, it was a convenient place to keep private keys while it worked but unfortunately it didn't last very long before it quit booting.

newnewpdroon I Was Wrong about Nix

systemd is container-aware, you should be able to directly "boot" nix containers then using tooling like systemd-nspawn, and login/manage using machinectl. It will all "just work" with systemd on both sides.

newnewpdroon In Case You Ever Want to Unicycle 21,000 Miles

It's a very dangerous road, I love cycling but refuse to ride on the PCH.

I've lived in a few PCH-adjacent neighborhoods over the years in the bay area, and I always had neighbors affected by bad accidents on hwy 1.

newnewpdroon I Was Wrong about Nix

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Systemd-nspawn#Examples

I don't see a Nix example there, but the NixOS github looks to have some issues already surrounding provisioning Nix for use in containers.

Containers are a great way to explore a distro without messing with your host, you can at least check out their user space, filesystem layout, and package tooling. The main shortcoming is you don't get to see any kernel-specific features, since you're essentially chrooting into the other distro's rootfs.

There's always VMs too...

newnewpdroon I Was Wrong about Nix

Can't you just throw it in a container to explore and learn the ropes before pivoting your entire host?

newnewpdroon A dark web tycoon pleads guilty, but how was he caught?

Running a hosting service is sure to include far more exploitable surface area than the tor network itself.

Just assume any one of their servers were vulnerable to RCE attacks, they hosted dynamic web sites on conventional web hosting stacks! These things leak deanonymizing information like a sieve.

newnewpdroon Librem 5 phone shows the cost of being different

I want so badly to agree with you, but it's become rather clear that puri.sm is a bit of a sleazy company, or at least its leadership is.

I've spoken with multiple ex-purism employees who were laid off before the librem5 shipped. Their comments largely echoed what's in Zlatan's Phoronix interview. [0]

At the moment I'm inclined to support Pine64 over Purism. We're not so desperate for a linux phone that we should throw our resources behind poorly run, misleading companies.

newnewpdroon Model built by researchers suggests coronavirus outbreak began in November

That's unlikely, this isn't the first time nor will it be the last cruise ships will be implicated in the spreading of infectious diseases.

Everybody knows cruise ships are inherently problematic in this regard due to the large numbers of international travelers living in close quarters for an extended period. It doesn't stop millions from using them, for some reason.

newnewpdroon Reflecting on the first two decades of our foundation

Amassing the billions in itself is not philanthropic, it's how those billions are then used.

You're certainly not being philanthropic giving those billions to your already handsomely paid employees whose welfare is already more than secured.

newnewpdroon The Website Obesity Crisis (2015)

I presume you're expected to work in the highest dpi, then have a post process stage for publishing the site which then generates the variants for you.

newnewpdroon Storm Ciara helps plane beat transatlantic flight record

AIUI you can only save fuel by not loading it, they can't land with substantial fuel remaining onboard without damaging the airframe. They'll just circle the destination to use up the excess fuel.

newnewpdroon Trying to sneak in a sketchy .so over the weekend

Their actual communications with the colleague didn't strike me as toxic at all.

It's a blog post, I took their use of "rando" as an artistic choice in emphasizing this person had utterly neglected to coordinate with any of the stakeholders beforehand, with the intent of going into production the next day.

From the perspective of the stakeholders, the person was effectively a stranger, and that's the crux of the matter being described.

newnewpdroon The Website Obesity Crisis (2015)

High dpi screens have made this so much worse.

Try browsing the web on a 128kbps ISDN-like connection, many sites are too slow to be usable or outright broken due to their own timeouts.

What I've noticed is many new sites are using huge high-res images as some kind of maximum-common-denominator to ensure things look great on high dpi screens, while everyone else has to transfer all this junk only to downscale it anyways at render time.

I'm often on a slow link and it's made me stop using the web almost entirely, outside of HN and reddit. Slack for instance is completely broken, it can't even manage to finish logging in without giving up.

It used to be that slow internet users just had to wait longer, but things largely worked correctly. Nowadays, with lots more javascript and async stuff having web developers programming timeouts and probably never once testing on a slow link, a lot of things are flat out broken.

newnewpdroon Manufacturing plant fire threatens worldwide vinyl record supply

It's also trivially recycled, AIUI vinyl records can simply be shredded to bits and put right back into the pressing process to make new ones.

I saw a documentary a while back about a region where new local songs were pressed into records on a weekly basis, I think it was in Jamaica. The local music scene was highly ephemeral, and people's records were constantly being recycled for this week's new tunes.

newnewpdroon How to Escape from Immoral Mazes

I'm under the impression that the vast majority of significant medical problems, in the US anyways, are associated with obvious risk factors such as obesity, sedentary lifestyle, and alcohol/tobacco consumption.

Those are all trivially avoided.
