newZWhoDis··on Coding in Vision Pro
It doesn’t need to do that, just be sufficiently high resolution.
newZWhoDis··on Smoking has long-term effects on the immune system
I feel the same way about alcohol, it’s 20+ years behind the stigma curve though.
newZWhoDis··on Nine US states are teaming up to accelerate the adoption of heat pumps
6.7kw is tiny. The smallest install I’ve personally seen is 15kw.
newZWhoDis··on Nine US states are teaming up to accelerate the adoption of heat pumps
You likely had an old, low SEER heat pump. The fact that it had emergency heat at all says so.
newZWhoDis··on Nine US states are teaming up to accelerate the adoption of heat pumps
$20k for a heat pump is sky high, you better have gotten a 24 SEER2 state of the art fully variable system for that.

If they sold you a 14 SEER1 for that then you got absolutely screwed.

newZWhoDis··on Nine US states are teaming up to accelerate the adoption of heat pumps
Higher efficiency panels + vertical panels would help. Most houses have decent south-facing walls.

Ground mount is also an option in many places.

The point you’re missing is electricity should never be expensive, if it is then you’re doing something very stupid.
newZWhoDis··on Alaska Airlines flight 1282 NTSB preliminary report [pdf]
Seems to solidly confirm the leak.
newZWhoDis··on The EPA is proposing that 'forever chemicals' be considered hazardous substances
This is one thing I’m hopeful about for EVs. Plastic is cheap because of massive demand scaling the oil industry, collapse the demand for oil and plastic becomes more expensive.
newZWhoDis··on Phones track everything but their role in car wrecks
Hilarious take.

Touch device with cellular radio physically attached to car: A-ok

Touch device with a radio not connected to the car? VERBOTEN.

newZWhoDis··on Appeals Court: FBI's Safe-Deposit Box Seizures Violated Fourth Amendment
So when are all the agents involved getting charged?

I already know the answer, but still…

newZWhoDis··on Free and Open Source Alternative to Airdrop
This. Apple’s built in migration tool always (well, the last 3 years anyways) fails to move everything in my File’s app over to the new device.

I’ve moved ~500-800GB via air drop in one go before.

newZWhoDis··on Show HN: Coffeehouse, one-on-one voicechat with random HN users
As someone who grew up with OG Xbox live, I find this comment pretty funny. HN crowd’s got nothing on early COD
newZWhoDis··on Apple's bad faith 27% tax on web purchases
>They always require your password for in-app purchases unless you disable it.

No they don’t. Biometric only is the default for all IAP/in app subs.

Android is the only one who makes you enter a password to subscribe, because Google is incompetent.

newZWhoDis··on US developers can offer non-app store purchasing, Apple still collect commission
>Yvonne-Gonzalez was skeptical of the 30% fee during the trial, and in the ruling she was suspicious about Apple's justification of the commission, writing that "the 30% is not tied to anything in particular and can be changed," but did not order Apple to do so.

We really do live in clown world

newZWhoDis··on Royal Navy forced to recruit for tob job on social media
The other problem is it’s not just a job, you sign away your rights for life and can be recalled at any time. Also, if you really piss them off they can recall you then try you under the BS military judicial system instead.

If you’re particularly unlucky you get blown up in the sandbox 6,000 miles from home and die for nothing.

Don’t sign on the line kids, it’s never worth it.

newZWhoDis··on Facebook incorrectly reports personal blog to DigitalOcean for phishing
Corporate bill of consumer rights!
newZWhoDis··on Meta-analysis: On average undergraduate students intelligence is merely average
Universal college has been a disaster, one I look forward to us correcting. It has caused untold damage to the millennial and gen X generations. Zoomers have started to adapt but the early ones got swept along with millennials.

For the overwhelming majority of people and majors college is a scam, one that robs you of some of your most productive work years and puts you into massive debt.

newZWhoDis··on Did I destroy my friend's TV with a magnet? (2022)
You’d think skeptics would learn their lesson after rouge waves. Tons of eyewitness accounts going back to antiquity but no footage, considered a myth for ages.

We even had a bunch of math saying they weren’t possible/probable! (Ex once in an 100M years or so) so they were quite sure of themselves.

The we started to get large scale buoy data and sure enough, rouge waves! (the math was wrong).

Our understanding of earth phenomenon is far from complete. For lightning, red spites/green ghosts/etc are all relatively new discoveries.

newZWhoDis··on Bitwarden Heist – How to break into password vaults without using passwords
Is this post sarcastic and I’m just missing it?

4 different locations to store program data, some of which are hidden, is freaking stupid design. Like, beyond moronic design.

Everything, and I mean everything, about a program should be in a single folder structure and the OS should by-default lock that application to only accessing it’s own folder unless otherwise granted permission (in a centrally auditable/revocable location).

Applications/ExampleApp/

Should contain everything, and deleting it there should clean it as if it was never installed. If it needs to access something in documents/desktop/etc, the OS should ideally present a file picker to pass in a copy, but applications could request access to a specific path if absolutely necessary. You should also be able to “save to desktop” without the application having read/write access to the desktop/documents.

“Exporting” is the application taking the local copy nested in Applications/ExampleApp/ and passing it to a system save dialog, then the OS can store the file (therefore having permissions) wherever the user wishes in an context menu that’s outside the application’s control (it’s the OS).

The idea that every installed application has wide-open filesystem access to say, all my documents, by default is pure insanity.

newZWhoDis··on A Canadian payroll dependency chart
This. I never hire anyone from NY or CA out of principle.
newZWhoDis··on A Canadian payroll dependency chart
I disagree, I think those types of things need to be said and in more places than they currently are. It’s the only way to build momentum to achieve change. Sure, it might be uncomfortable but that’s a part of growth.
newZWhoDis··on Malware abuses Google OAuth endpoint to 'revive' cookies, hijack accounts
LTT found out the hard way, their attacker had a session token for an employee and changing everyone’s passwords didn’t lock the attacker out.
newZWhoDis··on 12VO power standard appears to be gaining steam, will reduce PC cabling, costs
Nonsense. I have 600v DC from my solar panels. It’s not magic, just needs proper insulation.

Utility poles are 10’s of thousands of volts (AC), I guarantee you that will cook your goose AC or DC.

newZWhoDis··on 12VO power standard appears to be gaining steam, will reduce PC cabling, costs
Irrelevant. It’s virtually the same risk, the only minor difference between 240V AC and DC is a hypothetical arc is harder to extinguish in DC (AC benefits from the oscillation slightly), but if were to the point that wires are arcing we’ve already got major problems.
newZWhoDis··on Every major pharmacy chain giving government warrantless medical record access
In theory, however California eliminated their statute of limitation's for rape (was previously 10 years) and now people are being charged (and convicted) for 20+ year old crimes with only verbal evidence.

You might argue it’s not the same thing, but the effect is definitely the same: the law changed and people went from unchargeable to chargeable

newZWhoDis··on 12VO power standard appears to be gaining steam, will reduce PC cabling, costs
If we’re moving to a new standard I’d much rather we standardize around 240V DC with an improved plug design.

You’d have HUGE savings on the copper required for a standard home, plus you’d get a substantial increase in power capacity.

newZWhoDis··on Time is encoded in the weights of finetuned language models
>Twitter is slow

It’s faster than it’s ever been, and seemingly without 85% of its staff. Says a lot

newZWhoDis··on Audi puts big EV push on the back burner
I watched the recent Munro inspection of the Taycan’t and it was just embarrassing how poor it was from an Engineering perspective. Legacy auto is going to get their lunch eaten soon.

I even saw a snarky Reddit comment last week about how Tesla is doomed as they “only do like 1.5M a year vs Ford’s 4.2M year”. It’s like these people were born yesterday, they have no historical understanding or sense of progression. They live in a perpetual present, unable to see the bolder coming until it hits them.

So many shorts have already be wrecked, and now a whole new generation is about to get to the “find out” stage.
