nether··on Muesli – An alternative approach to Soylent
Have you tried Soylent? It's barely sweet. It's not like the maltodextrin in energy gels.
nether··on Why I am moving to Cleveland
You mean, someone would just go out, and tell lies, on the internet?
nether··on Why I am moving to Cleveland
Complete speculation: outskirts of college towns, some of the inland mountain towns in northern California like Quincy. The southern ones (Big Bear, Idyllwild etc.) are already swarmed. Even with these towns, you'd probably have to find something in a less desirable area and wait a decade or two for it to be gentrified. Many hipster or super expensive places were once the "bad area" of a big city: Venice Beach, warehouse district of Los Angeles, Pioneer Square in Seattle. Full of bums, needles on the ground. Super cheap.

The older people I met who lucked out with massive appreciation on their properties just bought houses/condos in cheaper areas with decent locations (commuting distance to the city center), then lucked out when gentrification passed over. At the time they were very bland areas.

nether··on Annual note to self: most of the world exists outside the tech bubble
These people don't want to move because they value community and social support over economics. This attitude is baffling to HN because it defies quantifiable metrics unlike money. Seeing everything as an economic problem is the essence of greed.

No!
nether··on Show HN: Crackle – keyboard layout for programmers
I don't think layout matters for speed unless we're talking top 1% of typists. Go on YouTube. Tons of people typing 100+ wpm with two fingers.
nether··on Jessamyn West, Technology Lady (2015)
If you want a taste of MeFi politics, here's a fun one: http://www.metafilter.com/151267/Wheres-My-Cut-On-Unpaid-Emo...
nether··on How to Pick Your Life Partner (2014)
Much of that can be summed up in the classic adage, "marry your best friend," someone that you really enjoy hanging out with in any setting.
nether··on Take Naps at Work
This was one of the awesome things about switching to Soylent for lunch. I'd sip it at my desk around my lunch break, and close my door during lunch for an hour of glorious shuteye.
nether··on The cognitive differences between men and women
Similarly, some leftists claim that race is a social construct because there is more genetic variation within a race than across them. Except you have genetic tests that easily identify race: https://www.wired.com/2007/12/ps-dna/ and medical studies that indicate the race of patients studied, because it is a medically significant concept: http://news.softpedia.com/news/Different-Races-Are-Genetical....
nether··on Ask HN: What tech that's right around the corner are you most excited about?
Another javascript framework, of course.
nether··on Ask HN: Should I buy a boat and live off the grid?
Yeah, he has a car that he parks at the marina.
nether··on Ask HN: Should I buy a boat and live off the grid?
I wasn't aware there was a stigma. It's not like living in a car, since many boats are designed to be long-term habitable. I know someone who does this in San Francisco and he pays $280/month in slip fees, a bit cheaper than rents in the area.
nether··on Zuckerberg hires former Clinton pollster
Am I the only one who thinks this speculation on Zuck running for pres is all nonsense? There's been a revolving door between Dem staff and elite tech industry positions since Obama. No one thought Larry Page or Sergey Brin was going into politics then. He's a young person very interested in politics, and has the wherewithal to explore the arena in some unique ways (visiting random blue collar Americans), but there's no indication he's ready to abandon his duties at FB. Or is there?
nether··on Want to Be Happy? Buy More Takeout and Hire a Maid, Study Suggests
It's interesting given how common it is to buy stuff that ends up demanding your attention ("your stuff starts to own you"). Like I know people who accumulate media (books, magazines, netflix lists) that they have to catch up on, when it can be feel better just to let it go and spend quiet time doing nothing.

The new tobacco companies.
nether··on Social Media Is the New Smoking
Seattle. I was living in Bishop, California for a while though. I've wondered if there's a market for taking engineering types on these trips, if I emphasize them as tech-free escapes. You can always go through Meetup or sign up for the trips run by REI, Sierra Club etc.
nether··on Social Media Is the New Smoking
Where is this place and what is it named?
nether··on Social Media Is the New Smoking
This is basically wilderness backpacking. It is sublime to hang out with likeminded folks, just focused on staying warm by a campfire, talking about your days.
nether··on Social Media Is the New Smoking
I've done this in a few ways. I go backpacking in the wilderness where there's no reception, and there's this Buddhist monastery I visit in San Diego where they ask you leave your phones in your car (it's a LOT better that way). I'd like to do a no-screens day once a week, unfortunately working in tech right now makes that difficult.
nether··on Japan Pictures Likely Show Melted Fukushima Fuel for First Time
You know, NASA didn't actually spend all that money developing the space pen.
nether··on The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck: A Book Rooted in Buddhism?
I'm sure buying my $30 inflatable raft at Bob's Outdoor instead of Amazon will save my "soul." That's what I've been doing wrong all this time.
nether··on The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck: A Book Rooted in Buddhism?
I'll do what I want. Fuck off.
nether··on Sourced Adventures – Adventure Travel Startup generating $125K/month
Honestly I lump audiophiles, oenophiles, and creationists in the same bucket of magical thinkers.
nether··on Dev Bootcamp Shutting Down
I wonder if these posh locations are worth it. I'm sure it attracts some students, and there's some advantage in the proximity to hip startups also in city centers. But students are low income during the program and hardly have a chance to do anything outside the office, given the workload of these bootcamps.
nether··on Dev Bootcamp Shutting Down
Can't bode well for Kaplan's other bootcamp, Metis for data science.
