nether··on I told a cat food company how much they’d save by using taller cans (2020)
Get a lid: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0746MLFB7/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_...
nether··on Microsoft tried to buy Nintendo, but got laughed out of the room
Fun fact: Nintendo of America and MSFT are both headquartered in Redmond.
nether··on Show HN: Thruhikes – A list of long distance hikes around the world
It's much easier to repackage data from Reddit/Wikipedia in a nicer format than to generate your own.
nether··on Experiments on a $50 DIY air purifier that takes 30s to assemble
The downside is that these filters sell out in places where there are fires. So the time to buy them is now.
nether··on The first person in the UK to have air pollution listed as a cause of death
Most forms of municipal power generation are much lower emission than a piston engine. Hydro, wind, and nuclear especially. Just having the generation take place with a near-constant RPM steam turbine is vastly more efficient than a stop-n-go motor.
nether··on Abandoned rape kits identify over 800 serial rapists in one Michigan county
> 86% of our victims in these untested kits are people of color. You're not going to find too many blond-haired, blue eyed white women ... Because their kits are treated differently, their cases are solved. That's just the way it is in this country. If you're a person of color, if you're a different economic class, then your case across the board, across the board, not just sexual assault — they're treated differently. And that's just the truth. People may not want to admit it, but I've seen it throughout my career and I know it's true

Wow.

nether··on Algorithm can find a neighborhood’s political leanings by its cars
Those are edge cases. Nothing says that this will be accurate for every individual block 100% of the time, but for most neighborhoods, the correlation between car type and political leaning appears strong.
nether··on Sugar industry withheld possible evidence of cancer link 50 years ago
Sunblock I bet. Rubbing that cream into your skin multiple times per day can't be good. In the hiking community, many hikers are moving to sun blocking clothing. There are even sun gloves now.
nether··on What Made the SR-71 Blackbird Such a Badass Plane (2015)
It's possible with job hopping, or program hopping within the same company. You just won't be working on that aircraft start to finish. I worked on 7 aircraft from 2005-2015.
nether··on Boston Dynamics: the New SpotMini [video]
Science has gone too far.
nether··on Why software engineers don’t get jobs: Three horror stories
Maybe it does? When I was learning Russian, it just helped to hear everything slowed down by 2x.
nether··on Long-Term Coffee Consumption and Risk of Cardiovascular Disease (2013)
5 cups/day isn't exactly breaking the bank, as long you're not drinking hipster sour watery stuff at $4.50/cup. I just drank instant coffee throughout college. At my high school, you could drop $10 into a jar for the "coffee club" and have unlimited coffee throughout the year (drip brew, pretty weak stuff).
nether··on Biomimicry: How Designers Are Learning from the Natural World
No, flapping wing aircraft simply are less efficent for size scales that can carry a person. That's why the larger a bird's wingspan, the less frequently they flap, such that condors, storks etc. are basically fixed wing gliders.

We in the artificial world do have our own local optima with quad copter drones. Flapping here would be more efficient. Consider seagulls that dive and change direction instantly, and can respond to gusts without missing a beat. We have nothing approaching that maneuverability. This is an active area of research.

nether··on Non-Consensual Intimate Image Pilot
Fuck Facebook
nether··on Earth on AWS – Open geospatial data
> The planetWRF model is no longer available for downloading.

Welp.

nether··on Quantopian hedge fund has lost about 3% since beginning of trading in June
This is a ridiculously tiny amount of time to judge performance.
nether··on Kremlin Cash Behind Yuri Milner’s Twitter and Facebook Investments
Sigh. HN has always done this to reduce editorializing in headlines. You're an oldtimer; how are you unaware of this?

Remember your priors.

nether··on Earth on AWS – Open geospatial data
You have real-time NEXRAD data, where the reflectivity is basically cloud cover. NEXRAD of course only covers the US.
nether··on If you type the letter “i” and it autocorrects to an “A” with a symbol
My upgrade went smoothly and everything works fine. iPhone SE here.
nether··on AI and ML to Revolutionize U.S. Intelligence Community, Pentagon Official Says
I've heard that most federal agencies are just starting to fix basic problems in their data management. Like vast troves of inconsistent spreadsheets being ETL'd into actual databases now. ML wasn't feasible because everything was such a mess.
nether··on Arcosanti, Paolo Soleri’s Arizona experiment in urban planning
It's a cluster of small, drab structures surrounded by dirt. It's the furthest thing from mindblowing, in its current state.
nether··on California Wildfires Burned Irreplaceable Documents on Silicon Valley History
Unicaring is in right now.
nether··on A Visit to a Synthetic Cadaver Factory
> I can’t tell you how many investors have insisted that we start making sex dolls

I wonder if they could at least sell components. The artificial skin in particular sounds like it could be worthwhile on its own, though maintenance could be tricky.

nether··on The Students Who Discovered Dieselgate
Just sounds like it was written by a brusque German dude. They state outright what Americans are all thinking.
nether··on Walmart will soon have robots roaming the aisles in 50 stores
Robot9000
nether··on CRISPR 2.0 Is Here, and It’s More Precise
I hope we can cure treatment-resistant depression of genetic origin with this.
nether··on If you care about diversity, don't just hire from the same five schools
Then we've got this 2013 article saying that Google doesn't care about GPA and test scores: http://www.businessinsider.com/how-google-hires-people-2013-.... Maybe things have changed since your experience.
nether··on Soylent can no longer ship to Canada
So they say. But the EU and Japan also banned it. I don't know who's right.
nether··on Soylent can no longer ship to Canada
Huel (another powdered food) is running into this. They just started shipping to the US, but are delayed with Canada because they say the regulations there are "much more stringent." Canada outright banned rBGH.
nether··on No human genome has ever been completely sequenced
I emailed dang about it a while (years) ago. He said he's added it to the fix list, after initially saying that having a quote tag would mess up the site's "character." You may want to email him too.
