neoromantique··on Travle: A daily game – get between countries in as few guesses as possible
I enjoyed it and then I realised that you need to wait till next day to play again. I'll have forgotten it ever existed in an hour, weird marketing gimmick I'd say.
neoromantique··on Krita AI Diffusion
AI is the norm for concept art already, it's too useful for it not to be.
neoromantique··on Rivian software update bricks infotainment system, fix not obvious
Doesn't take a drive to dealer to fix that, and even then you have engine RPM and engine sound to guesstimate the speed.
neoromantique··on Rivian software update bricks infotainment system, fix not obvious
The reddit thread in official subreddit suggests otherwise, with people suggesting using 'speedometer apps' on their phones as a workaround.

I don't know, I have car from 1991 so I'm just observing the trainwreck.

neoromantique··on Rivian software update bricks infotainment system, fix not obvious
>Infotainment updates, like what happened to Rivian aren't that dangerous. You lose "convienience features" like maps, air con, etc, but generally nothing that could kill you or someone else.

Also speedometer, which is hardly a convenience feature.

neoromantique··on A coder considers the waning days of the craft
I hate to post typical "As a ADHDer" comment but ugh, As someone with ADHD chatgpt and copilot are insane boosts to productivity, I sometimes have to google the most stupid things about the language I code in daily for half a decade now and copilot or chatgpt is amazing at reducing friction there.

I don't, however, think that we're anywhere near being replaced by the AI overlords.

neoromantique··on My rude-ass car
I've had two bmw e39's with a m57 engines, and these chains last literally forever. One of my engines has over 500k clocked on it, no chain rattle still.

Buuuuut, there's also modern Opel engines where timing chain is guaranteed to kill the engine if not replaced every 100k km.

So it really depends on the engine rather being simple chain vs belt.

neoromantique··on My rude-ass car
Been dailying a 1991 VW Passat for a bit now and it is so exciting to feel that your car actually belongs to you, no silly electronics, data collection or alike, I'll be putting it into a garage over the winter to preserve it, and it gets really icy here, so getting something with stability assists would be wise.

So I got a 2001 VW Golf to drive over the winter, and same story, but less charm.

(both are 1.8 petrol)

neoromantique··on How far one should live from a Nuclear Power Plant? is 50 miles good enough
I lived for decades in walking distance from a NPP, then I educated myself on the subject, read a lot about it on the internet

...and now I feel even safer living near NPP.

I sadly moved away for unrelated reasons, but I'd move to a similar place in a heartbeat. Turns out that requirements to actually build a NPP(access to water, seismic activity etc) are quite strict and make for a good place to live overall.

neoromantique··on Yelp sues Texas for right to publish actual accurate abortion info
Yelp being on the right side of a lawsuit is kind of weird
neoromantique··on Fairphone 4 with /e/OS by Murena now available at fairphone.com
I want to like Fairphone, but it is completely made in China, which is a deal breaker.
neoromantique··on Yandex open sourced it's BI tool DataLens
>I can't see that argument working in a court of law...

Don't US(or any other country for that matter) laws discriminate based on nationality all the time?

neoromantique··on iCloud Drive silently deletes your content
NextCloud, but the experience is fairly frustrating (gotta open the app manually quite often).

Google Photos had better hooks previously, and I can't tell if new iOS limits that shaft NextCloud also affect Google Photos, since I don't use it for a while.

neoromantique··on I'm fed up with it, so I'm writing a browser
>I'll leave you to your delusions and get on with my life

That's easy to say when you are living in a country with access to a healthy financial system, this is a luxury, not norm.

neoromantique··on Unlimited Kagi searches for $10 per month
Been a paying customer for a year now, it's very much worth it.
neoromantique··on OpenBSD/ARM64 on Hetzner Cloud
We've been running Scaleway for years (Both VMs and managed k8s).

There are quirks from time to time, their disk system has been nightmarish for a while, but they've recently had a major overhaul there and we didn't really have any major complaints since. It is very decent for the price, I would say.

neoromantique··on Masked 'boot girls' are freeing booted cars in Atlanta
Wicked, if anyone put a boot on my car and he was not employed by the city, I'd call the police to take care of it.
neoromantique··on Masked 'boot girls' are freeing booted cars in Atlanta
They seem to be doing it for a fee, which is just stupid. When cars are 'booted' in US, is there no ticket to go along with it to bring further repercussions if it is illegally removed?
neoromantique··on Plex announced to block instances on German hosting provider Hetzner
Oh, so that's what this email was about.

I have already moved my plex to a home server prior to this, but this anti-consumer bs is just enough of a final push to move over towards the better alternatives.

Good riddance

See, it's not <insert some bad take about left>!
neoromantique··on Z-Library Petitions U.S. and Argentina to Cease ‘Illegal’ Criminal Prosecution
They do need to fund it somehow, don't they?

It can also be (easily) argued that Z-Library is a definitive net-benefit to the humanity as a whole.

neoromantique··on Chiptune.app
Very nice interface, sadly no keygen music :(

Zelensky let them out after many years in prison when faced with full scale war, I do like how you are silent on Russia recruiting violent offenders in prisons to go to Ukraine though. And no, it was not just Wagner doing so, and even Wagner was doing it with explicit approval from Russian government.

The audacity to compare Ukraine, which has incredible level of transparency during this invasion in every aspect, welcoming auditors and investigators from all over the world to Russia is very telling of your biases.

I am Russian, I am well aware of nuances, but to even begin to compare the two is insanity in 2023.

neoromantique··on That Time I Posted Myself Out Of a Job
As I said, I took it off wiki and I did not verify sources further due to lack of interest in this angle (Wagner is equally despicable in my view).

Russia and Russian Military have a long and proven track record of lying without any shame or remorse, so I don't really care what the "official" standing of these units is. They are fed by Russia, armed by Russia and controlled by Russia, everything else is "Пыль в глаза".

Without downplaying the troubling beginnings of Azov (who aren't the worst offenders by a mile if you look at 2014-2015, to be honest) -- it has little bearing in 2023.

Ukrainian army went a long way cleaning up their ranks and becoming a professional army since then, they had trials and punished their own soldiers for committing crimes in ATO, which Russian side not only did not do, but encouraged.

The World is holding Ukraine to an impossible standard right now, magnifying every individual case and person to paint the whole country in bad light while turning the blind eye to one to Russian atrocities (See HRW about Cluster munitions for Ukraine vs silence on Russia using all sorts of forbidden weaponry).

neoromantique··on France passes bill to allow police remotely activate phone camera, microphone
I don't know the processes in US, but in Europe I saw this in action first hand done in minutes, so I don't know.

edit: Over a stolen phone, no less, not even a person being in danger.

neoromantique··on France passes bill to allow police remotely activate phone camera, microphone
or they just triangulated using his cell phone, it can be very accurate in urban settings

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rusich_Group#cite_note-:2-1

I wanted to verify sources a bit further myself, but alas: https://i.imgur.com/YxG58lR.png

To be fair, it is silly to even separate them as they're all fighting hand in hand with regular Russian army with Russian army supplies, so for all intents and purposes they were both part of it.

But seeing as the person I was responding to is touting about "powerful Russian military" and "weak Europe" from the comforts of the western middle class, I don't really want to engage in discussion any further.

>Even if we consider "Wagner" to be "neo-nazi" with no evidence what so ever.

lol, I'm done.

Edit: Looked through comment history and it makes sense now.

You're a joke, and you should be ashamed of yourself.

neoromantique··on That Time I Posted Myself Out Of a Job
Wagner and its sub Rusich? Both are directly funded by Russia (as recently admitted by Putin himself).

You can possibly claim that it is PMC rather than direct Russian military, but then there is the recent ultimatum given to Wagner troops -- Join Russian military ranks or leave.
