Infinite scrolling makes it extremely annoying to use. Also very limited search results. I searched for "London" and got nothing modern enough to use, or nothing that even resembles London remotely. Are there really no images of London in the public domain or just that they aren't either being tagged and hence not indexed or maybe both?

> If you want to meet a goal, you need to incentivize it. Carrots work better than sticks. Sales people get a lot of stress, and can get fired easily, but they can also make a great deal of money, if they succeed. Security people don't get fired, if they succeed, and get fired, if they don't. Often, the result of good work is ... nothing ... No breaches, no disasters, no drama. Hard to measure, as well. How to quantify an absence?

Microsoft Edge (and windows 11 enterprise) overall is such a piece of garbage and spam. Just recently my work computer got Enterprise 11 and I had to jump through hoops to remove the spam (news articles on home page). I work with clients and I have to share my screen and when I open a new tab I don't want to see what f#cking Trump or Biden did. It's extremely unprofessional.
As a kid this type of art fascinated me so much! And recently a friend shared with me something similar and I had to look up whether there is a name to this form of art and I found it on Wikipedia.
Awesome! I'm driving myself to Kouchibouguac to experience the totality. Considering that maritimes is always cloudy during this time of the year I'm not expecting much of a "view" but just want to experience the total darkness. Where we live (NS) we are getting about 95% darkness but I figured a couple of hours drive is worth to experience 100%!
Not exaxtly grapheneOS but close enough CalyxOs has started supporting Fairphone 5 and it has replaceable batteries AFAIK: https://calyxos.org/news/2024/03/05/fp5/
I had a trial subscription of Prime couple of years ago and I hated that they showed skippable ads about other Prime content at the beginning. That was enough for me to never join Prime.
I have mixed feelings about heat pumps. Where we live winters aren't too harsh - our coldest night would be around -18C and for the most part January/February hovers around -10C at night. Our main heating is oil-based hot water baseboard radiator which I think is THE BEST type of heating solution from comfort standpoint. But few years ago we installed two mini-split heat-pumps which work great and save us a ton of money - BUT they don't heat the house evenly and you must leave all indoor doors open for effective heating. There is an option to convert the main heating to a geothermal heat-pump heating up the water but that is quite an expensive solution right now. For now I am never giving up oil in the foreseeable future.
Exactly! People who can actually solve these problems (including politicians) have no incentive to solve them. On the contrary they have more incentive to keep things as they are.
It's absolutely true - the lack of respect for human lives. Remember all those incidences where a film star or a rich kid or politican drinks and drives over a family of poor people sleeping on the streets and you hear nothing about it after it has happened?
One of my relative killed 2 girls drunk and driving in a village and got away with it. Every time I think of that, it traumatises me :'(
I agree. I am on the author's telegram channel where he continuously "bragged" about how he didn't use ads for support and said everyone should run away from ad supported app. And then suddenly he sold his work to an ad supporting company? It is his work, his choice but he lost all my respect and trust after this episode. At the least he could have warned on his telegram channel, but it has been crickets there since Oct 30th.
I can probably make some space for a home gym, but like I said earlier part of the motivation going to the gym is to see other people working out and being serious at it. I am no longer an advanced "lifter" because of certain injuries and disorders that were diagnosed but I do LOVE the stairmaster at the gym and it is best for my health problems, and that kind of equipment is not something you can easily keep at home (you need a tall ceiling too), so I do need specialized machines in that regards. As far as weight training is concerned I can probably survive on a home gym.
You will find that if you go at the times I go, most of these things are not a problem. It's usually only the serious, respectful people who show up at that time. Once I went to the gym around 5pm and OMG, it was the first time ever I felt like why am I here. Never happened again !
I've been a gym rat for almost 20 years now, and I'm probably the worst customer for gyms. I only workout at 24*7 gyms and being an early bird I get there at 430 and I have pretty much the whole gym for myself. I am there 6 days a week and I always shower at the gym. Further, I use the corporate discounts available to join the memberships. With all that, it comes down to approx. $50 a month for membership and I used to think that it was on the higher side (to be fair post covid it increased from $40 to $50). But reading this article was an eye opener, I guess I need to thank all those people who subsidize my gym fees, and I am now more accepting of the membership fees.
Finally I must add, all the friends (more like acquaintances) you make at the gym are absolutely crucial to motivate oneself and also just have a positive social interaction. I guess that perk of the gym membership is not even quantifiable.
I feel really thankful and privileged to have gyms around now, I will never take them for granted going forward.
Hahaha they are low quality because I didn't want the page to suck up too much bandwidth (at the bottom there is a link for high(er) quality version, but the full quality version is not on the server). Thank you for your kind comments about my dog, I'm crazy in love with him and the bond only gets stronger as time passes.
They absolutely deserve this! App is light weight and works smoothly. Every once in a while I do get into unmarked building numbers, to get around that I search location on google maps (in browser) and get the coordinates and then plug them into organic maps - not a big deal for me.
Same, I'm using Firefox and unlock and didn't get this message either. Btw it reads even better in reading mode. Can you imagine needing a mode for reading for stuff that's actually meant to be read?
I had to read that a few times because I was wondering maybe there's a thing called "single husband" , but boy it's just the other usage of the word "single". English is a funny language :)
100% agreed. I have different expectations from an Indian friend vs an American/Canadian friend. That said I make friends very easily and there's certainly a lot of culture sharing going on, which I really enjoy. For instance some of my westerns friends are now used to just showing up at my doorstep before even sending me a text message, now that's what I was used to growing up. I know this is a very silly thing but to me it matters a lot, because I hate the "let's plan charade". Also, I really like that in the western culture there's no unnecessary pressure to do things in group. For instance, I have very specific eating habits and I don't usually eat after 5pm. When I'm invited at a western friend for dinner and I tell them upfront that I won't be eating anything they don't mind, they get it. On the other hand, the Indian friends keep forcing me to try things, it takes them a couple of tries before they realize I won't listen and then they stop doing it. It is really annoying but I always have to face that with any new Indian friend.
