neel8986··on Jeff Bezos says AI is in a bubble but society will get 'gigantic' benefits
Simple hypothesis. Top 5percent of US wealth now belongs to top 50 richest American. Even if you ignore corruption, lobbying and any ill intent you can definitely conclude that this top 50 individuals have better way of getting return from money than rest of the population. Even if if their delta of return is 5% we can assume that withing next 50 years there is a high probability that these guys will own 30-50% of wealth. I have a strong belive AI will acclerate that further.
neel8986··on UK becomes fastest-growing G7 economy
It tells more about the bad the entire G7 economy is. 0.7% is nothing to be happy about.
neel8986··on New ChatGPT Models Seem to Leave Watermarks on Text
Ideally this watermarks are much more subtle. For example they put watermark through different distribution of word sequence which are difficult to remove or identify
neel8986··on LLMs: Harmful to Technical Innovation?
This is mostly because how current LLMs are learning stuff my memorizing stuff. Worst thing of AI through LLM is rote learning where same model is used for reasoning and memorizing. Hopefully in future it will be like small core of language understanding and reasoning which ideally can look up a reference ( through search ) and use RL to get better at the topic through trial and error
neel8986··on Google Earning Q1 2024 [pdf]
It is $300B/year company growing at 15%. I don't think growth is an issue here
neel8986··on Microsoft strikes deal with Mistral in push beyond OpenAI
At this point OpenAI should definitely think of some sort of partership with AWS and GCP. Otherwise they will be just one of the few models
neel8986··on Bard is now Gemini, and we’re rolling out a mobile app and Gemini Advanced
Wow. Is this a puzzle from internet. I could have never guessed the answer
neel8986··on Sam Altman, Greg Brockman and others to join Microsoft
This is where other big tech giants need to move. MSFT provides nothing extra which Google/Amazon/Meta can not move. Make it multi platoform and make it more open source.
neel8986··on Sam Altman, Greg Brockman and others to join Microsoft
Make the model open source and lets see what MS can do with army of lawyers
neel8986··on Sam Altman, Greg Brockman and others to join Microsoft
Best thing open AI can do is to align with Google and Amazon. This will keep MS on its toe.
neel8986··on OpenAI board in discussions with Sam Altman to return as CEO
This is power struggle between silicon valley VC group and AI scientists. This conflict was bound to happen at some point across every company. I don't think the interest of both the group aligns after certain point. No self respecting AI scientist want to work hard for making closed model SaaS products.
neel8986··on Falcon 180B
Bard can also give correct result
neel8986··on India ruling party's IT cell used AI to show smile on arrested protesters' faces
We are looking at a ruling government who uses AI to demean olympic winning athlete to protect a serial molester. Somehow even after all this heinous acts I can see bunch of so called educated techies defending that ruling class. Is the hate for "other" religion so strong?
neel8986··on India ruling party's IT cell used AI to show smile on arrested protesters' faces
To give more context to outsiders these are olympic medal winning athletes protesting against a serial molester who happens to be part of ruling government. To discredit these athletes ruling government's "IT Cell" is using AI to show they are not sincere enough even after police brutally stopped their protest. No media entity reported on this gross in justice as all of them have already sold their soul.

Every time I think Modi's RW government can't go any lower they prove me wrong. World should be worried that soon to be third largest economy is going to ruled by a political force who are inspired by Nazi. These are some of the quotes from Golwalkar who was the brain behind the current militia Golwalkar https://twitter.com/jaskaransandhu_/status/10569508194997534...

neel8986··on Sam Altman goes before US Congress to propose licenses for building AI
PG predicted that https://twitter.com/paulg/status/1624569079439974400?lang=en Only it is not the incumbents but his own prodigy Sam asking for regulation where big companies like Meta and Amazon giving LLMs for free.
neel8986··on Waymo One doubles service area in Phoenix, continues growing in SF
I guess the biggest advantage will be pricing. The cost can easily be < 10x if we remove the driver from the equation. But this will need scale
neel8986··on Ask HN: What are ways to combat loneliness and build meaningful connections?
One thing that has worked is taking the effort. Make a phone call to that old school friend. Ask coworkers to go out for a drink after work. Inviting neighbours to watch a game over food. Joining a local deep learning meetup. We have to take the extra effort to overcome the social anxiety. Rejection is absolutely fine. Respect their space and move on without hard feeling.

One interesting thing is modern society has broken all of us. Human beings are not evolved to stay in isolation in a place so far from where you grew up. Loneliness is affecting everyone. So when you take the extra effort, you are also filling their gap.

neel8986··on Google tells staff it plans to limit publishing AI research
This is ending soon. Even according to sam altman from ai we have reached a limit on large model. We need new techniques like attention, transformer, layernorms
neel8986··on Google tells staff it plans to limit publishing AI research
This is really sad. End of an golden era of AI research. Within few years all major companies will stop producing fundamental research. We are going to get lot of marketing material masquerading as research paper ( looking at you GPT4). Thanks ClosedAI ( OpenAI ) for brining so much openness in the field /s
neel8986··on Google shared AI knowledge with the world – until ChatGPT caught up
Issue is this complete stops open research in AI. Last decade was really golden period of AI. Every major industrial lab collaborated like peer groups. Google Brain, Deepmind, FAIR, MSR every one played their role. We went from broken Alex net to trillion parameter transformer in a matter of 10 years.

Everything stops now. I don't think any thing of the scale of transformer or even resnet will ever be shared. Guys with suits ( or VC with hoodies ) have reached the party and researcher . I really really hope open source model wins. That is the only way to unlock the knowledge and make real progress. Even OpenAI admits the path to larger and larger model stops very soon. We need more innovation and that innovation needs to be shared

neel8986··on Geoffrey Hinton leaves Google and warns of danger ahead
LOL Google stock price is more that what it was before ChatGPT's release. Search engine market share hasn't changed by a even 1% neither did profit from search. Every day HN's hyperbole is increasing.
neel8986··on Geoffrey Hinton leaves Google and warns of danger ahead
I mean he was one of the first to use backprop for training multilayer perceptron. Their experiments showed that such networks can learn useful internal representations of data[1]. 1987. Nevertheless he is one of the founding fathers of deep learning

[1]Learning representations by back-propagating errors

neel8986··on Geoffrey Hinton leaves Google and warns of danger ahead
Really? Hinton dont need openAI to be relevant. He literally invented back propagation. He sticked to deep learning through 1990s and 2000s when almost all major scientist abandoned it. He was using neural networks for language model in 2007-08 when no one knew what it was. Again the deep learning in 2010s started when his students created AlexNet by coding deep learning in GPU. Chief Scientist of OpenAI Ilya Sutskever was one of his student while developing the paper.

He already have a Turing award and don't give a rat's ass about who owns how much search traffic. OpenAI just like Google will give him millions of dollar just to be a part of organization

neel8986··on A morale crisis after multiple Meta layoffs
I completely agree with this and i believe lots of innovation in meta is happening here. The biggest reason for VR not taking off is the VR world at present looks funny and old like 90s video games and headset is heavy and clunky.

This can change completely if they can increase the resolution of headset, make them 3x lighter and with jaw dropping graphics created by generative AI streamed from cloud.

neel8986··on A morale crisis after multiple Meta layoffs
I am talking about jumping to create a family of mobile apps that dominate the data day to day usage of mobile. They lost their chance of owning a mobile OS which they are suffering till now
neel8986··on A morale crisis after multiple Meta layoffs
Meta is still a 600B company and large credit goes to Zukerberg. His insight into jumping to mobile at the very beginning, making critical acquisitions, relentlessly going to new geographies, investment in AI all played off. Every major company made mistake including Google ( Google Plus ), Microsoft ( Windows phone ) and apple ( entire 90s ). A company making mistake just means they are still taking risks and not sailing to oblivion. Moreover we still don't know how entire VR game will play off given the technical arc. Just one or two cycle hardware innovation may make VR successful.
neel8986··on OpenAI closes its monster $10B funding round at $27B-29B valuation
They have absolutely no moat. Trained on published architecture using publicly available data. By the end of 2023 all companies including meta, Google, and Amazon will be have similar models. Only moat they currently have is tons of specially curated data for rlhf which other companies are catching up.
neel8986··on Google announces Q1 2023 earnings [pdf]
Interestingly cloud is profitable. Even being 3rd, GCP is a 30B dollar business growing at 27%.
neel8986··on Bard coding update with Colab exporting
You do realize that ChatGPT is owned partially by another ad gint Microsoft who is also hell bent on showing ads in start menu
neel8986··on Google DeepMind
Raising money is ok. Selling 50% of your company for 10B the company when apparantly you have trillion dollar defensible business dont any business sense.
