napoleongl··on Gov.uk has replaced Stripe with Dutch provider Adyen
I’d say it’s the norm in much of Europe for starters…
napoleongl··on Show HN: Ferrite – Markdown editor in Rust with native Mermaid diagram rendering
Looks interesting! I’m discouraged from using mermaid and D2’s online playground for privacy reasons and have hand on my roadmap to get a local editor. This might be it! Does it support theming of mermaid diagrams, I noted the style keywords were in the roadmap still.
napoleongl··on D2: Diagram Scripting Language
What is the purpose of those animations? If I could use them in a presentation where I click through a diagram adding things as i click and their connections being animated for highlight then sure. I don’t really like the example where the text changes in you link, the whole diagram jumping around just because a text changes seems like something that would be annoying. So I guess you would need to render everything and keep some things hidden until activated?!

As a side not, I would love a proper Swimlane-diagram. I think you have all the building blocks with your ability to nest things in flowcharts, just need to force-align some boxes in different swimlanes and align the lanes themselves (and probably a lot more behind the scenes).

napoleongl··on The Molecular Basis of Long Covid Brain Fog
Interesting! I feel I’ve been kinda foggy in my head since I quit smoking a year or two before covid and it then got worse with the pandemic. And I’ve felt there’s been more effect from a night out with party smoking than just seeing an old friend. Might need to try my own home grown snuff when it’s done and not just give it away.
napoleongl··on QGIS is a free, open-source, cross platform geographical information system
There are quite a few. https://guides.library.columbia.edu/geotools/R I mostly used sf at uni and also preferd it to QGIS in most scenarios. Far from a pro user though.
napoleongl··on ChatGPT's enterprise success against Copilot fuels OpenAI/Microsoft rivalry
If only MS copilot was an actual co-pilot in my daily flight of work… but no, it cannot actually draft an email, create planner tasks or book meetings. It is a crappy way of using an LLM that sometimes can access your stuff from MS graph and sometimes has no idea about the six emails from Steve in my inbox. And no, its PowerPoints are not good either, they are LinkedIn in ppt-form.
napoleongl··on Vision Language Models Are Biased
Rumor has it that those heuristics were used to detect spies.

napoleongl··on Show HN: I built an app to generate story relationships using Mermaidjs
Wild that I was daydreaming earlier today about generating some diagrams with mermaid to show the plot and characters over the lifetime of a tv series!
napoleongl··on Swedish Royal Library releases speech-to-text-model
Being a friend of one of the developers I’ve heard about this while it was in the works, but now it is officially released. 50k hours of parliament debates and other sources are at the foundation of it. Article in Swedish only but I guess the crowd here can solve that. Hopefully it becomes the standard model in places like MS Teams as their current model can’t handle dialects particularly well.
napoleongl··on Dust from car brakes more harmful than exhaust, study finds
The tyre wear has been tested as well. TLDR EVs don’t wear more tyres than ICEs, except for the Tesla. Wear is larger for FWD cars. https://www.vibilagare.se/nyheter/dackslitage-elbilar-siffro...
napoleongl··on 'It's a money game to them':son takes on UnitedHealth over elderly father's care
And how low of a tax they pay compared to SoCiAlIsT countries where the tax also takes care of health related things… It seems deeply ingrained they’d rather pay a 1000 bucks for themselves and not risk helping someone else rather than pay 100 bucks that someone else might also benefit from.
napoleongl··on Estonia to disconnect from the Russian-run electricity network on Saturday
If it hadn’t been for Germany being one big area in terms of electricity pricing, all swedens four electricity areas would have been far below that. Now our two southernmost areas are infected by what I understand is southern German prices.

napoleongl··on Scientists uncover how the brain washes itself during sleep
Falling asleep with nicotine patches on results in wild dreams so it clearly screws up something in the brain!
napoleongl··on Debugging Compiled Code for R with Positron
Another strength of R, albeit via the tidyverse-package, is in data manipulation. It excels in taking some misfit, human friendly, pile of excel-sheets with implied relations and turning it into rectangular data sets that can actually be analysed. Sure there are faster alternatives if you are doing big data, but if you need versatility R is a good friend.
napoleongl··on Australia/Lord_Howe is the weirdest timezone
My first thought as well as a swede. And coincidentally one of the things my old Kenyan classmate found the most strange about Sweden was the fact that the length of day was not even close to constant. That and when I explained to him that the sun being up doesn’t necessarily mean warmer weather, in the winter it’s practically takes the temperature further from zero as sun means no warming clouds…
napoleongl··on Have McKinsey and its consulting rivals got too big?
Nya Kalolinska Hospital in Stocholm was pretty much the work of BGC… most expensive hospital in the world. (In Swedish but GPTs exist nowadays so…) https://www.svt.se/nyheter/lokalt/stockholm/nks
napoleongl··on Psilocybin bests SSRI for major depression in first long-term comparison
The article states that both groups received psychological support though. The only mention of 20 hours I find in the article is as an option to psilocybin. Does the original research article say something else?
napoleongl··on Show HN: Open-source real-time talk-to-AI wearable device for few $
I can see something like this being used in various inspection scenarios. Instead of an inspectior having to fill out a template or fiddle with an ipad-thingie in tight situations they can talk to this, and a LLM converts it to structured data according to a template.
napoleongl··on Emacs Speaks Statistics
In what way is R less powerful when used through Rstudio than through the terminal?
napoleongl··on Cryptominers made $100k from mining at an Airbnb for three weeks
Also seems like a great way to happen to show products you have been sent, although you are absolutely not a breathing billboard…
napoleongl··on Flux: Open-source text-to-image model with 12B parameters
Can’t you get this done via an LLM and have it generate code for mermaid or D2 or something? I’ve been fiddling around with that a bit in order to create flowcharts and datamodels, and I’m pretty sure I’ve seen at least one of those languages handle absolute positioning of object.
napoleongl··on Run CUDA, unmodified, on AMD GPUs
Otoh recepies and drawings are commonly available for free. So if you can support yourself the cake and engine repair is free. But if you need support then you can get someone to bake or build for you.
napoleongl··on Sculpting the moon in R: Subdivision surfaces and displacement mapping
An option to the Hadley book that also covers some nice statistical methods is Statistical Rethinking by McElreath. Not really available for free though but interesting read.
napoleongl··on Recently increased prevalence of human forearm median artery: Microevolution
It’s enough that there is no decrease in the success of the offspring really. They don’t have to be more successful, just not less.
napoleongl··on Embeddings are a good starting point for the AI curious app developer
3Blue1Brown has some other examples in his videos about transformers, most notably I think is that hitler-Germany+italy ~ Mussolini!

napoleongl··on Shiakaku of the Day
Oh, sorry, thanks! Think i rewrote it due to autocorrect three times but apparently I slipped nonetheless!
napoleongl··on Shiakaku of the Day
A small puzzle game that I find to be a reasonable pastime. Author has also done rabble.se but that is only in Swedish.
napoleongl··on An open source initiative to share and compare heat pump performance data
Meanwhile it was estimated that half of Swedish houses were equipped with heat pumps in 2016. That number has certainly not gone down since given the steep rise in electricity costs we’ve had since. Many houses have been converted from horribly inefficient direct electric heating to heat pumps.
napoleongl··on Why can't my mom email me?
The one feature of an HP Elitebook that could perhaps be called ”Elite” is that they come with smart card readers built in. USB-readers also exist.
napoleongl··on Roll-Invert-Unroll: An easier way to replace a duvet cover
Not quite, but the liners are some 20 years. Changed and washed twice a year in 90 degrees and still fresh. Save for the buttons that fell victim to our stone mangle, the covers of the same age are as new as well. That said, none of them are ikea, it’s sort of work place injury from the hotel business to use high quality linen.
