naavis··on Tire dust makes up the majority of ocean microplastics
In places with decent public transportation people do not overwhelmingly prefer cars.
naavis··on A revelation about trees is messing with climate calculations
To get around the Wired.com paywall. They only let you read a limited number of articles for free.
naavis··on Fireball over Iceland
It is just about the brightness. Answer number 1 in the FAQ states:

> A fireball is another term for a very bright meteor, generally brighter than magnitude -4, which is about the same magnitude of the planet Venus in the morning or evening sky. A bolide is a special type of fireball which explodes in a bright terminal flash at its end, often with visible fragmentation.

Or was your question why are some so bright? That is mainly a function of size and speed.

naavis··on Sweden brings more books and handwriting practice back to its tech-heavy schools
Yep, a hip belt on a backpack makes a world of difference when you can put most of the weight on your hips instead of your shoulders.
naavis··on Steam turns 20 today: “We had to try a lot of different things over the years”
Curious. I have been getting full download speeds from Steam with no issues.
naavis··on Show HN: Real-Time 3D Gaussian Splatting in WebGL
No need to apologize, it's a minor thing! Anyway really neat stuff and I love seeing it here.

How will you study books or notes for homework, if they are at school? I admit that we had a lot of school books to carry when I was young and I occasionally got a sore neck from lugging them around, but I wouldn't call it especially unhealthy. You anyway don't have that many school books until ages 13 and up here (Finland), and by that time you are perfectly capable of carrying things.

This is really cool! The control scheme is confusing though. Instead of the typical WASD for moving and using the mouse to look around, dragging the mouse moves forwards and backwards and orbits around some point, A and D strafe, while W and S look up and down.

EDIT: Looks like a full list of controls is in the readme: https://github.com/antimatter15/splat#controls

naavis··on Privacy Nightmare on Wheels’: Every Car Brand Reviewed by Mozilla
My Kia does this too, but the consent screen goes away after a while if you don't do anything.
naavis··on What happens to all the stuff we return?
In most European countries you are allowed to return defective products without the original packaging and used. You just can't return items that way only because you didn't like them.
naavis··on Have attention spans been declining?
I feel like all of these patterns apply to adults too. I can definitely relate to number 1 and number 3.
naavis··on Ubisoft account -including games- can be permanently deleted for inactivity
They probably are not going to delete all accounts, and thus not going to save "couple GB of hard drive storage"
naavis··on Rethinking Infrastructure as Code from Scratch
We use it in our company to provision all our cloud resources. Granted, you can't create app registrations and such with it (yet) like you mentioned, and there are rough spots, but I think that is quite far from "not very useful".

I have found it quite joyful to use with Azure.

naavis··on A surprisingly simple way to foil car thieves
At least here in the Nordics no one uses easily pickable locks for house or apartment doors. Those kinds of locks are mostly found in cheap padlocks and maybe bike locks. Doors usually have Abloy locks or similar.
naavis··on The 90s Developer Starter Pack
We still had programming classes in school with Pascal in the early 00s.
naavis··on Firefox 115 can remotely disable any extension on any site
Could you give some examples? I use Firefox daily and have not had to change anything in about:config nor user.js.
naavis··on WebStudio: Open visual development for the open web
As far as I can tell, it is also a desktop application, and the source code is available on Github: https://github.com/webstudio-is/webstudio-builder

naavis··on Ask HN: Dev productivity tools you would pay for
The payment processor ceased operations in 2016. Kagi Search launched in 2018.
naavis··on Intelligent Brains Take Longer to Solve Difficult Problems
> You can tell immediately within 10-15 minutes if a person has "the right stuff"

I do a lot of interviewing for our company, and I used to think this too. But I've been totally wrong a few times. Sometimes someone I've been 100% sure about has been let go after a few months, while some I've been very iffy about have turned out to be excellent coworkers.

naavis··on Using computers more freely and safely
"Prefer X" does not mean "Never ever use anything else than X".
naavis··on Robotic arm made out of glass
Except for one piece, all the structural parts are stained glass.
naavis··on Legend of Zelda game sells 10M copies in three days
To be fair, KSP2 landed in early access only very recently. No one has claimed it is a finished and polished game.
naavis··on Google Calendar and Assistant Reminders Will Migrate to Google Tasks Soon
It's otherwise good, but the Fastmail calendar sadly doesn't have an Android widget, nor can you create reminders like in Google Calendar. You can only create events.

I migrated emails to Fastmail a few years ago, but have been holding on to Google Calendar.

naavis··on How much can you earn creating content on Youtube?
I went to check out your channel just to realize I was already subscribed. Well played!
naavis··on The UK will spend £100M to develop its own 'sovereign' AI
Not part of the European Union no, but definitely part of Europe as a geographical area. Unless you claim that Norway isn't part of Europe either?
naavis··on Ellie – A Mastodon Client for Windows
Same experience here! It definitely looks like there would be more content further down.
naavis··on Legs and knobs for IKEA and other furniture
It's sawdust and glue if you buy the absolute cheapest IKEA stuff. And even that is pretty good quality considering the price. IKEA does sell furniture made out of real wood too, it naturally is just more expensive.
naavis··on We need to tell people ChatGPT will lie to them, not debate linguistics
It's a considerable sum for many people in many countries. Free on the other hand is equally free everywhere.
