naavis··on Selfish reasons for building accessible UIs
What kind of flaws did you have in mind?
naavis··on Building an AI server on a budget
What kind of image classification do you do at home?
naavis··on Show HN: I reverse engineered top websites to build an animated UI library
Looks cool, but the site is very heavy! I have an RTX 3070 GPU, and GPU usage went shot to 70% when I opened this website on Firefox.
naavis··on The Lost Art of Commit Messages
I can only speak from my own experiences, but I have found commit messages extremely helpful, when they explain the "why" of the change. And as unfortunate as it is, many of us also have to work with unreadable codebases.
naavis··on The Lost Art of Commit Messages
They are incredibly helpful when you are trying to find where a bug was introduced, and trying to figure out why some piece of code is the way it is.
naavis··on What, if anything, should I do about using Mozilla's Firefox
Brave is based on Chromium, so that rules it out for the author based on what they wrote.
naavis··on Humpback whale briefly traps young kayaker in its mouth in Chile
So a proper title for the piece would be "A humpback whale briefly suckles on kayaker".
naavis··on 0-click deanonymization attack targeting Signal, Discord, other platforms
Indeed, "incredibly precise estimate of the user's location" feels like an exaggeration. But still, very interesting!
naavis··on Sherlock: Hunt down social media accounts by username across 400 social networks
One example is Finnish legislation: https://finlex.fi/fi/laki/ajantasa/2004/20040759#L2P4 Sadly only available in Finnish. The law applies both to employees and candidates.

EDIT: Looks like there is an English translation. See section 4 of: https://finlex.fi/en/laki/kaannokset/2004/en20040759_2019034...

naavis··on Sherlock: Hunt down social media accounts by username across 400 social networks
In many parts of the world it is illegal for a recruiting party to search for information on a candidate without their consent.
naavis··on We Built the Saturn V (2017)
Virtually every profession is also more forgiving to failures.
naavis··on Texture-Less Text Rendering
No, they say they are not going to store a bitmap in a texture, which is not the same thing as embedding directly in the shader code.

You could compare that to storing some data in a separate file which needs to be read during runtime versus embedding the data directly in the source code.

naavis··on Building My Resume in HTML Using Eleventy
Why do you find it hard to read?
naavis··on It's hard to write code for computers, but it's harder to write code for humans
> psychopathic scammers like Robert Martin

That is a pretty wild take. Would you like to elaborate on that?

naavis··on Why Scrum is stressing you out
I don't think anything in Scrum dictates iterations must be one week long.

naavis··on Azure Portal Is Down
Portal has been working for us, but storage accounts have been unreachable from certain regions for the past 30 minutes. Possibly Portal is also broken in the same regions.
naavis··on Microsoft AI spying scandal: time to rethink privacy standards
I have been very satisfied with Fastmail.
naavis··on Thinking out loud about 2nd-gen email
I would assume most people want to keep the possibility of someone previously unknown contacting them.
naavis··on New seafloor map only 25% done, with 6 years to go
Enough for consumer-grade Hario coffee scales to include a geographic location setting, so that you can weigh your coffee beans accurately.
naavis··on Boeing chief must have engineering background, Emirates boss says
Everything can be a process. If some individual is truly fully responsible for a screwup, what process allowed the person to get that far?
naavis··on YouTube Says It Has More Than 100M Premium and Music Subscribers
Interesting, I assumed the prices would be the same or at least roughly the same in whole of Europe! My price was in Finland.
naavis··on YouTube Says It Has More Than 100M Premium and Music Subscribers
Here in Europe it is €11.99, so about 13 dollars a month.
naavis··on Drawing.garden
> You can't even draw something meaningful with it like the domain says.

You can draw a garden, so drawing.garden seems very apt to me.

naavis··on Subject-First Commit Messages
I don't know, I do it almost daily. So your mileage may vary.
naavis··on Building a bare-metal bootable game for Raspberry Pi in C#
How have I missed Uno! I was familiar with Avalonia, but first time hearing about Uno. I'd love to see more UI frameworks for .NET that also work on Linux.
naavis··on Hacking ADHD: Strategies for the modern developer
For me the most important function of a todo list is to remind me what I am supposed to be doing _right now_. I often get distracted and veer off to do something else, but a quick glance at the top of my todo list gives me that little nudge to go back. Anything further down the todo list will possibly stay undone.
naavis··on Work only 3 hours a day, but everyday (2016)
This I agree with. But I would say being available to help and support and whatever is part of the job. If you say you work for 4 hours, but still have to be available for all of the above for 8 hours, you are working for 8 hours, not 4.
naavis··on Work only 3 hours a day, but everyday (2016)
Not exactly, no. But how far can you stretch that? Working 4 hours a day is half of what is agreed in the contract. Would you be fine with the employer ignoring the agreed salary with the excuse of no one following contracts exactly?
naavis··on Work only 3 hours a day, but everyday (2016)
> When I tell fellow engineers about it, they think it’s unethical because my contract specifies 40h/week (I’m an employee). I couldn’t care less what the contract says about working hours.

Honest question, do you unilaterally ignore any other parts of the contract?

naavis··on Mindblowing dissertations
It takes a lot of skill to meaningfully communicate complex and deep topics to people who are not already familiar with the field.
