mzahir··on What do you mean ‘we need more time’? Project schedule estimation in software
http://qr.ae/ROlwZp - I've found this answer on quora to be one of the best explanations as to why software estimates are so off.

mzahir··on Global Sea Level Rise Map
This map is not accurate. I tested by looking at the Maldives, of which the highest point is only 2.4m above the sea level but even at 7m, the map indicates that some islands would be above the surface.
mzahir··on Hacking Redis to Save Money
tl;dr version: Intersection operation took too long, forked redis to enable key retrievals/expirations on a slave instance and ran the CPU intensive intersection on the slave.

mzahir··on Octotree: the missing GitHub tree view (Chrome extension)
Github also has a file finder similar to the Command-T plugin for vim - https://github.com/blog/793-introducing-the-file-finder

This extension is great for exploring but if you know what you're looking for, cmd+t will save you more time.

mzahir··on Indian Ocean garbage patch
The 5 Gyres Foundation http://5gyres.org advocates both cleaning up plastic from the ocean and cutting down the use of it
mzahir··on Maldives island residents report sighting of 'low flying jet'
Maldivian here. The army (MNDF) wasn't able to pick anything up from the surface monitor radars. There is no data to back this story outside of eye witness accounts from the residents of Kuda Huvadhoo.

Can neither confirm nor disprove :(

mzahir··on Keeping Parts of Your Codebase Private on GitHub
You can have multiple git repositories within each other so you could just `git init` in the directory you want private, add it to the parent repo's .gitignore and point it to a different remote.
mzahir··on Terminal Wedding – Ruby gem for Prerita and Jai's marriage
It took a while to pass the parental CI
mzahir··on Here's Waldo
Forget the measuring tape, find Waldo with Mathematica! http://stackoverflow.com/questions/8479058/how-do-i-find-wal...
mzahir··on How to attract girls to the tech industry
Engineers and doctors are held in high esteem by Indians (not to mention a lot of other Asians) so no, the women in India do not 'work in IT to get ahead because India is poor'
mzahir··on Ma’am, Your Burger Has Been Paid For
This reminds me of Jonathan's card, which was shortly exploited as an 'experiment' and ultimately frozen by Starbucks

mzahir··on Are STEM Workers Overpaid?
Wages are so skewed towards the top earners - A typical corporate CEO gets paid $7000/hour. Suppressing tech wages isn't going to make a dent in income equality. Tech is already more egalitarian with the offering of shares to employees at most (if not all) levels.

mzahir··on Google Latitude will be retired
Reader is actually harder since it provided RSS feeds for websites that didn't support RSS (using the in-house indexed data)
mzahir··on Worst CAPTCHA Ever
Haha, sadly the vast majority doesn't last past 6 years due to EOL on various components and inflexibility to changing business requirements. A more common need is the ability to have a scapegoat / fall-guy for failures of projects that have unrealistic/arbitary requirements and/or deadlines set by an upper management that is no longer in touch with technology.
mzahir··on Worst CAPTCHA Ever
Exactly. They're not the people everybody trusts to determine if incoming traffic is human/machine.

Your response implies that they are inept at their area of expertise.

mzahir··on What made you realize that math is beautiful?
I think the responses have been skewed towards visual presentations since the questioner intends to write a children's book. Thanks for the link - simple, powerful and beautiful.
mzahir··on Why I wear the same shirt every day
Inspired by Sony, Jobs created a uniform for Apple employees (to bond them) but the idea was poorly received and thereby, scrapped. He ended up wearing the uniforms, which 'grew' on him. Even though he later justified his uniform as convenience, their primary intent wasn't to free up his cognitive cycles for Apple.
mzahir··on "Occupy Flash" campaign urges users to uninstall Adobe Flash plugin
Shouldn't this be named "Unoccupy Flash" or just "Uninstall Flash"? It seems silly to use "Occupy" in this context.
mzahir··on Use Jonathan's card to buy yourself an iPad
Yes, it's part of the social experiment and it was a pretty cool hack.

I think a more accurate scenario is: Q: What happens if you let everyone contribute to and buy coffees from a Starbucks card? A: We are in the process of finding out but some very smart but unethical folks are pulling funds outside of coffee purchases and ruining the pot for everyone else.

mzahir··on Use Jonathan's card to buy yourself an iPad
It's not like giving a gift. It's making a donation for a specific cause and then having the funds misspent on something different. The publicly accessible debit card was part of the 'social experiment' which seems to result in what we already knew a long time ago. People are happy to abuse the system for what they believe to be the greater good.
mzahir··on Google+ users are 88% male
Most of the invited users are from the overwhelmingly male tech community so these stats have little to do with the product.
