mvolfik··on Black Hat Exploits of the Stupid-Easy 80s
wasn't it 'SmartClass' by any chance? I also had a lot of fun killing it during high school
mvolfik··on Purelymail – cheap, no-nonsense email
With improvmx.com you can point a domain at them, and then set catch-all forwarding to e.g. Gmail. Sending is possible thanks to most providers (incl. Gmail) allowing sending from different address after verification, and if you set DKIM and SPF it shouldn't cause any issues.
mvolfik··on I loved jQuery, and still do (2019)
note that browsers' cache has recently been changed so that it's isolated for each origin - if you visit a.com which loads jQuery, it doesn't speed up loading jQuery on b.com at all https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/Privacy/State_P...
mvolfik··on Virtual DOM is pure overhead (2018)
Where do you find React easier to use than Svelte? I did mostly backend and simple pure-JS frontends before and never picked up react because of how long the tutorial was and how messy the tooling felt. Svelte was a breeze in both of this and I didn't experience larger issues yet, so I'm curious what I'm missing out on?
mvolfik··on Windows 11, Amazon, and Uncomfortable Questions
My experience is that even running Among Us (i.e. a very simple game) via Steam/Proton on Ubuntu LTS (i.e. the most common platform) was quite fiddly. Didn't have chance to try much else, Factorio is luckily native
mvolfik··on Ask HN: Best “I brought down production” story?
I had to reread this to check if you're really not talking about Ingress servers, because Niantic really seems to be doing changes directly in production all the time

also I completely understand how invested one can get in explaining Ingress

mvolfik··on A pencil sharpener that creates a never-ending pencil (2015)
Yes, I think I don't even remember seeing a piece with wood bits not seconded by the metal thingies (I love the mechanism btw, it's weirdly satisfying)
mvolfik··on Astro: Ship Less JavaScript
Just from what I've heard about Deno - isn't this exactly what they are aiming for? Bring Node/JS back closer to the browsers and make use of ES modules etc?
mvolfik··on Astro: Ship Less JavaScript
or unless you build a site for somebody for whom editing Markdown files is too much
mvolfik··on Flame: A PureScript front-end framework inspired by the Elm architecture
I'm also this kind of i-want-to-know-how-things-work person and also never managed to stay at learning React, Vue etc. But a few months ago, I discovered Svelte and I absolutely love it. I recommend you to give a shot to their excellent tutorial which you can finish in < 1 hour https://svelte.dev/tutorial/
mvolfik··on Ask HN: “Tank man” image search blocked on Bing and DuckDuckGo
for me it works such that if I search for text results and switch to images, the 4 are shown. But they disappear afer any refresh of the page, no matter safe search settings
mvolfik··on Show HN: I wrote a book about UI [pdf]
see your comment siblings, there are some clever font tricks to achieve that too
mvolfik··on Proof-of-stake is inherently self-referential
I'm new to PoS, so please apologize my lack of knowledge - but which part of the system will consume as much power as a medium sized country?
mvolfik··on Are you better than average?
There are probably quite many interesting insights that this can provide.

At first I thought the fact that 76% think they procrastinate more than average is one of these insights, but then I remembered I'm playing this game.

mvolfik··on Ask HN: What are some tools / libraries you built yourself?
you mention "text message to miband 3" - did you, by chance, make MiBand hackable?
mvolfik··on Flask 2.0.0 has been merged into master
that is not supported. But why would you want to serve that with CORS headers? It's only meant to be displayed in the browser and in dev environment, not production
mvolfik··on Flask 2.0.0 has been merged into master
How are these set in werkzeug? Sound like you would be using the werkzeug dev server then...

But this works for me:

    @app.errorhandler(ApplicationError)
    def handle(e):
        resp = e.args[0]
        resp.headers["Access-Control-Allow-Origin"] = "..."
        resp.status_code = 500
        return resp

    @app.route("/err")
    def err():
        raise ApplicationError(jsonify({"reason": "test"}))
mvolfik··on GitHub repository for Sedgewick's Algorithms is taken down
well, if this is the author of the book, they probably have their contact anyways. And if the claim was clearly illegitimate and the owner didn't want to provide this, I guess he could try going without it. There are probably easier ways to dox people
mvolfik··on RotaJakiro: A long live secret backdoor with 0 VT detection
How does it help them? If you find file with this MD5 on your system, you have either the virus, or a colliding binary crafted by the attackers - bad in either case \o/
mvolfik··on Amulet – a short poem with a lucky SHA-256 hash
reminds me of the reddit bot that lets you know when you accidentaly post a haiku. Internet can be a nice place at times
mvolfik··on Ask HN: How to get back hacker's mentality and joy of coding
I know that market has changed a lot, but seeing the mention of having part-time job since 15, I'd still love to ask about that: how did you finding such job go? Was it remote? Any advice for high schoolers looking for something like that now?
mvolfik··on Ask HN: Options to build a little online store
After posting this, I found https://chrisdiana.dev/simplestore/. This is pretty much the level of what I'm aiming to build - session in local storage, two clicks checkout. Doesn't look very complex. I just wanted to be careful about Dunning-Kruger effect - already ran into that once quite hardly
mvolfik··on Spotify is killing the open podcast ecosystem (2020)
Beware though that "available on Spotify" (idk Podimo) doesn't necessarily mean that it's exclusive there. But it's very common around here and many people use it for convenience (and the podcasts can advertise it as "look we are in this fancy mainstream app", not weird (?) RSS, while they likely offer that too). I myself used Spotify for freely available podcasts too, only recently switched to Podcast Addict for nerdy automatic download settings
mvolfik··on Representing SHA-256 Hashes as Avatars
That would be so creepy. Imagine a random face you've never seen in your life appearing as your avatar
mvolfik··on Representing SHA-256 Hashes as Avatars
Try changing just a few letters in the hash. If you change letters at the start, it changes drastically. But letters at the end change just small bits
mvolfik··on Czech PM claims Russia played major role in 2014 ammunition warehouse explosion
Some interesting things for context:

- Russian embassy in Prague is one of the biggest embassies in CZ

- our president is strongly leaning to Russia, lobbying for Sputnik V vaccine even though it's not approved, and verbally dismisses sanctions against Russia

- all of this is happening during preparations of Dukovany nuclear power plant expansion, where Russian Rosatom still wasn't dismissed despite clear security risks

mvolfik··on .new – Action Domains
I got used to these so quickly – my favourite ones are cal.new (Google calendar event), docs.new (Google doc) or gist.new, I use these almost every day
mvolfik··on Why Rust strings seem hard
this is way too common in Python world too - packages (crates) use dashes (they look nicer?), but the packaged library is named with underscores, because `-` is math operation and can't be in a name
mvolfik··on Securing a Postgres Database
I'll be soon doing this for a project running on LAN without connection to internet, during events once COVID is over
mvolfik··on I bought ISO 8601-1:2019 and 8601-2:2019
I think there was some bug in a big service (Twitter? very unsure) a few years ago related to this conflict of ISO and 'real' year
