mvcatsifma··on Ask HN: Do US engineering skills translate well to European companies?
It’s 20+ years since I lived in Germany (Berlin). At the time it was pretty easy to rent a high quality property for a reasonable price. I know a lot has changed since then, and the “global housing crisis” is also affecting Germany. Sorry can’t give you more details than that.

I am confident my language skills advice still applies.

mvcatsifma··on Ask HN: Do US engineering skills translate well to European companies?
Learn (some) German. Admittedly not an engineering skill - but it will be greatly appreciated by your German colleagues. Background: Dutch engineer who lived in Germany for 3 years, and worked for one of their largest engineering orgs.
mvcatsifma··on Ask HN: Advice for someone who stagnated in their career. Help
Hi scarface74, is there a way to contact you directly? It looks like the Reddit handle in your profile has been deleted. Thanks!
mvcatsifma··on Ask HN: Have you created a 'fake' (pseudo anonymous) social account; if so, why?
How is this different from stealing something from your local grocery store?
mvcatsifma··on Ask HN: Best Way for a Dutch Speaker to Learn Polish?
These tips are invaluable, thanks a lot!
mvcatsifma··on Ask HN: Advice for leading a software migration?
CYA: Keep comprehensive records of all decisions made and identify who made them throughout the process.
mvcatsifma··on Ask HN: Best Preventative for Aging Parents?
Second that. Joe Rogan's interview with Dr Peter Attia is also quite good. See: https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x8jrpbm
mvcatsifma··on Ask HN: Good book to learn modern networking?
Seconded; I also recommend this book.

I am a pragmatic Senior Software Engineer with over 15 years of experience that brings an agile mindset and a passion for solving my clients’ most challenging technical problems, experienced working onsite and remotely. I work in a structured and systematic manner and am a proponent of the agile philosophy.

My technical focus typically involves Golang and Java using open source tools and frameworks. My projects often include implementation and application of best practices such as test driven development, refactoring, continuous integration, continuous delivery, and code review.

I seek and try to evangelize the value of teamwork, commitment, integrity, and dedication to quality from my colleagues and client teams.

Native speaker of Dutch with full professional proficiency in English and German.

mvcatsifma··on The widespread layoffs are more because of copycat behavior than cost-cutting
This is the correct explanation.
mvcatsifma··on Ask HN: How to have a long career in tech?
This is the good stuff.
mvcatsifma··on Ask HN: I hate gym. How to stay in shape?
Have you tried group-based high intensity training, like Crossfit? Like you I dislike traditional, equipment based gyms. But I absolutely love CF.
mvcatsifma··on Ask HN: What's your approach to raising kids?
Father of three here. This is great advice, thank you.
mvcatsifma··on Japan has changed in important and visible ways
Amsterdam is like that, maybe just a bit less dysfunctional. I think it's a matter of respect and decency to learn the language of the country you live in.
mvcatsifma··on Ask HN: Any advice on becoming more organized?
I am a Getting Things Done adept since more than 10 years. I believe it's made me consistently more organized and productive.

"Getting Things Done (GTD) is a personal productivity system developed by David Allen and published in a book of the same name. GTD is described as a time management system. Allen states "there is an inverse relationship between things on your mind and those things getting done"."

Good luck!

mvcatsifma··on Hard truths I learned when I got laid off from my SWE job
This would interest me as well.
mvcatsifma··on The five-year engineering feat Germany pulled off in months
That "evidence" is at best circumstantial. One counterfact is that Nordstream pipeline at the time of it's destruction was not transporting gas, i.e. it had already been shut down and abandoned by the Germans.
mvcatsifma··on The five-year engineering feat Germany pulled off in months
That is a pretty wild claim. Mind backing it up?
mvcatsifma··on Ask HN: What are your goals for 2023?
Staying alive. We don't appreciate enough how important that is.
mvcatsifma··on Amsterdam tech firm MessageBird cuts workforce by 31%, or 240 jobs
Amsterdam tech company Messagebird is slashing its workforce for the second time in a month, cutting the number of staff by a total of 31%.
mvcatsifma··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (July 2022)
"Die gesuchte Stellenausschreibung konnte nicht gefunden werden." for all three links.
mvcatsifma··on Ask HN: At a peak of my dev career, I hate my life
+1 to CrossFit. It pulled me through the birth of my youngest daughter, three job switches in a fairly short amount of time and the pandemic. Like others have said, it will not solve all your problems, but it will definitely make you feel better about yourself.

I actually came to CrossFit through reading Tucker Max's book "Mate" (ISBN-10: ‎0316375365) which I also recommend you read. Good luck brother.

mvcatsifma··on Things I’ve learned in my 20 years as a software engineer
I believe such an API already exists: https://pdftables.com/ (no affiliation).

Went to a presentation at a Golang meetup in Amsterdam by the guys behind this company. Seemed to know their stuff. But I have no real world experience using it.

mvcatsifma··on Ask HN: My lack of dating prospects is severly impacting my career. What to do?
Read and internalize "Mate" by Tucker Max (search for ISBN 9780316349437 on Amazon, no affiliation). I read it when I was already happily maried. But this is the book I wish I read when I was about your age and that I seriously consider giving to my now 13-year old son as soon as he reaches the appropriate age. And assuming he will accept that kind of advice from his father off course :) I also enjoyed the accompanying podcast that you may find here: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-mating-grounds-pod...
mvcatsifma··on Ask HN: What are your non-tech hobbies?
- Crossfit @i640GYM in Amstelveen, Netherlands

- Cooking

- Riding my bike

mvcatsifma··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (August 2020)
Neither the domain fraudio.com nor fraudio.io returns your homepage??
mvcatsifma··on Ask HN: Finding videos of people practicing programming Golang
You could check out the "GO: With Intensity" series at cleancoders.com. Here's a link to the first episode: https://cleancoders.com/video-details/go_with_intensity-epis...
mvcatsifma··on Node vs. Go: when to use what?
I don't see how wanting to "prototype something and move fast" is a good reason for choosing NodeJS over Golang. It is fairly easy to build a highly performant backend service in Golang using just the standard lib. See for instance this wiki page: https://golang.org/doc/articles/wiki/
mvcatsifma··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (October 2019)
The link to the backend engineering role is broken...
mvcatsifma··on Ask HN: If you were to switch career, what would you do?
Blacksmith / Expert Sword Maker.
