mulligan··on It Is Time For Basic Income
Can you explain what you see as the problem and why the solution to that problem is not to tax income?
mulligan··on Multitail
We built a multitail functionality back in the day, but we built it on top of a general purpose shell script to do things across multiple machines that we called multido: https://github.com/mochi/miscscripts/blob/master/cmultido
mulligan··on Intro to Haskell for Erlangers
I attended this talk and it was very well done. Most intro to $LANGUAGE talks try to share a few very simple examples of the language. Something most people could read about and absorb on their own in 10-15 minutes. Bob's slides and presentation went for breadth, acknowledging that this was not a tutorial but a way to present listeners with a great sense of what the language does, how it contrasts with Erlang, and [what I found the most useful] a good explanation of how to approach some of the more difficult to explain concepts. Now when I sit down to actually learn Haskell, I have a useful mental model on a bunch of the not so obvious concepts.

I think video of the talk that goes with these slides will eventually be uploaded at: http://www.youtube.com/user/ErlangSolutions

Some of the presentations from just a couple days ago are already up, so I hope to see the rest soon.

mulligan··on Tomorrow's Apps Will Come From the Bitcoin Protocol
sarcasm on my part ;)
mulligan··on Tomorrow's Apps Will Come From the Bitcoin Protocol
He meant to say billions of ripple coins, surely.
mulligan··on Lyft Funding Official: Documents Filed for New $150 Million Round
"The company filed a document associated with a Series D round worth $150 million in Delaware this week"

I wonder what that $150M will be worth in Chicago next week.

mulligan··on Searching For One-Sided Tradeoffs
I think many hn readers would relate to the SAT example via the hiring process. You can get amazing engineers, even if you can't pay them as much as Google, by offering them a chance to work on more interesting projects or in program languages they find more interesting.
mulligan··on At These Companies, Interns Make More than the U.S. Median Household Income
They left out all the law firm summer clerks. Also a number of interns at these companies are graduate students.
mulligan··on With elective surgery, you can plan for almost everything except the price
I think this problem is something the folks at https://pokitdok.com/ are trying to solve
mulligan··on A Major Coinbase Milestone: 1 Million Consumer Wallets
yeah, but just think of how much they save on transaction costs when they buy something online [without the ability to chargeback]!
mulligan··on How to Get a Job at Google
WARNING: TOM FRIEDMAN.

Why is that not on the link?

mulligan··on Do messages get lost when Erlang modules are upgraded?
Mochi Media uses hot code loading in production.
mulligan··on Ask HN: Has anyone ever clicked on a tag cloud?
I've clicked on the one they used to have at theeconomist.com
mulligan··on Medium is Winning
probably to reduce click delay, which may not be a useful thing given that people are mostly reading on medium, not clicking.
mulligan··on RapGenius Growth Hack Exposed
I can only assume this would hurt them since the Panda update by Google a while back.

But more importantly:

Every instance of one-on-one communication I've seen by Rap Genius (this and the aphyr emails) include over-the-top frat boy style phrases. Are they being sarcastic, is it an affectation, or do they really speak like a parody of every "bro" ever?

mulligan··on Is Google building a hulking floating data center in SF Bay?

mulligan··on Former Amazon star exec killed in bike accident
I'm curious, is a bike capable of stopping on an incline at while going at 40 mph in the same amount of time as a motor vehicle?
mulligan··on The psychiatric drug crisis
I can't speak for the author of the parent post, but my understanding from his comment is:

He's suggesting the development of software to help people track their mental health, in much the same way people currently track other aspects of their day to day life, such as with a fitbit or mapmyrun. If people could track their mood, medications their taking, when and how frequently they take them, etc, that information would be valuable at both an individual and aggregate level.

mulligan··on Data Broker Lets You See Their Dossier About You Starting Today
Wasn't mapreduce developed at google around 2003? From what year are you comparing Acxiom's system?
mulligan··on What It's Like To Be Ridiculed For Open Sourcing A Project
Isn't the whole node.js ecosystem subject to this criticism?
mulligan··on QLB (قلب) - Program in Arabic, display algorithms as calligraphy
Cool project,

one nit in the description: "The name قلب is pronounced 'alb "

in standard arabic, it is actually "qalb", some dialects happen to drop the q sound

mulligan··on The Gmail app for iPhone and iPad: version 2.0
Nice, it finally has multi account support, which was the big reason I was still using the mobile web version.
mulligan··on Automating xkcd Diagrams: Transforming Serious to Funny
When will wolfram alpha do this for me?
mulligan··on Why was a scam company able to raise $76 Million Series B?
A twitter search on JustFab also shows they have hired some spammers to pump their site. Lots of tweets like this: "Dеаr guуs, whеn will уоu lеаrn? Girls сan nеvеr hаve tоo manу shоes! Sincеrеly, Sign uр аt JustFab & stаrt buуin"
mulligan··on RIP Vile Rat, EVE Online Diplomat, IRL State Dept Rep Killed In Benghazi
Actually, you are wrong. Libyans overwhelmingly supported the revolution. My family, friends and family friends are from Libya I just spent a month there this past summer.

These actions have been pretty clearly condemned by Libyans and don't represent the whole country. But nice try flogging your conspiracy theory.

mulligan··on Twitter acquires Clutch.io
actually, both erics
mulligan··on Creepy Spying System Revealed by Wikileaks, Which Then Gets Hit by DDOS Attack
Nope. But I do believe my family and friends living in Libya. I also believe family friends there.
mulligan··on Creepy Spying System Revealed by Wikileaks, Which Then Gets Hit by DDOS Attack
Yeah, RT alone is not a reputable source. They thrive on unfounded conspiracy theories and often times report outright falsehoods. During the Libyan revolution, they would claim whole cities were under Gaddafi control when they was clear video and multiple members of international media proving otherwise.
mulligan··on TapIn.tv (YC S12) Brings Instantaneous Live Video Streaming To The iPhone
http://bambuser.com/ was doing effectively the same thing during the Egyptian protests.
