mthld··on The African workers driving the AI revolution, for about a dollar an hour
The first link was wrong. I updated it to the one I intended to share, about Françafrique.
mthld··on The African workers driving the AI revolution, for about a dollar an hour
Read for yourself: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fran%C3%A7afrique

Like working in some FAANG? Spending tons of money into accelerating climate change, maximizing profits for stakeholders while aggressively suppressing every cooperative efforts for the workers to unionize?

Sounds great! Congrats!

mthld··on The African workers driving the AI revolution, for about a dollar an hour
And where do you think these governments comes from? Why do you think they are in such a precarious situation?

Maybe colonialism has something to do with it, hasn’t it?

mthld··on The African workers driving the AI revolution, for about a dollar an hour
Thanks a lot. I’ll probably earn less money, but waking up and getting out of bed every morning will be much more meaningful.
mthld··on The African workers driving the AI revolution, for about a dollar an hour
It’s planned. I’ll do something actually useful for people, work in medical/social care or maybe go back to farming (what my family has been doing since generations).

Feeding people with something else than marketing bullshit to their brain, feeding them something they can eat.

mthld··on The African workers driving the AI revolution, for about a dollar an hour
Yeah. Look at all the benefits of colonization in African countries. Look at the great job we are doing. Giving them money to alienate themselves looking at the shit we produce. Such a great advancement for humanity. Thanks lord for bringing civilization to the savages

Jeez this article is nonsense! The author is invoking social sciences terms but clearly has no idea what they are talking about.

> There is no point in having some people's opinions be more important than others. That is the essence of discrimination.

No, open a dictionary or Wikipedia and see: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discrimination

> Discrimination is the process of making unfair or prejudicial distinctions between people based on the groups, classes, or other categories to which they belong or are perceived to belong, such as race, gender, age, religion, or sexual orientation.

Taking the risk to feed the troll by commenting here. This whole embarrassing blog article sounds written by someone who mistakenly conflate many things. If people call you out because you’re acting like an asshole they are not “canceling” you. If they ask you to leave a community you polluted with your toxicity, hate for women, brown and black people, they are not attacking your “free speech”, simply showing you the door.

My god, people really need to grown up, touch some grass, grow a backbone and stop playing the victims, so fragile!

mthld··on Tailscale Funnel now available in beta
I sadly failed to find the information I needed: are we somehow allowed to use proper custom domains?
mthld··on Show HN: A GitHub business card generator
Nice project! Sadly the emojis present in my GitHub bio aren’t being rendered. I can’t see them in the image. :)
mthld··on Swiss evoting system – IsProbablePrime is incorrect for input 19
Well, I'm swiss and evoting at least twice a year... https://www.eda.admin.ch/eda/en/fdfa/living-abroad/schweizer...
mthld··on Tipi – A personal homeserver for everyone
https://yunohost.org is a much more mature project, with a larger app ecosystem. Give it a try, you won’t be disappointed.
mthld··on A fully open-source and end-to-end encrypted note taking alternative to Evernote
If you are interested in this kind of app you may like to take a look at https://cryptpad.org, a full featured collaborative office suite. End-to-end encrypted, built from the ground to know as little as needed about you and easy to host.

Try it on our flagship instance: https://cryptpad.fr, no registration required!

mthld··on Price of FSD will rise to $15k in North America on September 5th
What does FSD even means?? There is no mention of that in the author’s thread. Please stop with acronyms!
mthld··on End-to-end encrypted collaborative office suite
You’re welcome! The documentation needs some work, it isn’t par with the latest CryptPad version. It’s entirely possible this information is missing!
mthld··on End-to-end encrypted collaborative office suite
That's a very interesting comment, thank you.

You can actually upload images, photos & even videos to your CryptPad Drive. Just head to https://cryptpad.fr/drive/ and choose whatever file you want. :)

mthld··on End-to-end encrypted collaborative office suite
TLDR; CryptPad is a 6 years old FOSS project developed by XWiki SAS, a french company who has been doing open-source for 17 years. It aims to replace proprietary, unencrypted services like Google Docs, etc. It runs directly in the browser and the code is licensed under AGPLv3.
mthld··on CI for the Debian Linux kernel team
It’s been a while since I didn’t visited a website not mobile-ready… Hopefully reader-mode works as expected.
mthld··on Deploy a Gmail-like email server in 30 (ish) minutes
I concur, a very well crafted and maintained project.
mthld··on Saying goodbye to an old friend
To be honest it wasn’t a thing anymore since some years already. I was a client of them and I stopped using Better facing too many issues and no help from the maintainers…
mthld··on Sustainers, Boost and Badges, Contribute to Signal
That’s an interesting question indeed. Based on this public documentation from Stripe it seems they take a 1% cut: https://stripe.com/pricing/local-payment-methods

But maybe I don’t understand it properly, first they talk about a fee then there is a table with prices…

mthld··on Sustainers, Boost and Badges, Contribute to Signal
I happen to be somewhat disappointed by Signal recently (crypto payments bundled in app, shady open-source practices…) but to this day I cannot find any viable alternative as a full-featured messaging application (and don’t tell me about Matrix ecosystem). So when these financial contributions features were added I decided to subscribe for 5€ per month. If you value Signal services I encourage you to do the same!
mthld··on Signal won't support M1 Macs anytime soon
Thanks for the detailed explanation, I better understand now and indeed it has no place here.
mthld··on Signal won't support M1 Macs anytime soon
English isn't my mother tongue, I thought the expression was appropriate but reading your comments I realised maybe not. Update the title accordingly.
mthld··on Signal won't support M1 Macs anytime soon
It became slow and unresponsive over the months, eating more and more memory. I'm currently trying the community supported ARM version and it's a relief.
mthld··on Signal won't support M1 Macs anytime soon
The community already done that: https://github.com/dennisameling/signal-desktop (working on Windows & Apple ARM). Still, I think it's a shame that all the work was done, ready to be merged (needed PRs were open) and Signal devs just shut the door on it.
mthld··on Use forums rather than Slack/Discord to support developer community
Do you already know Flarum? If so, did you tried it?

https://flarum.org

mthld··on Thoughts.page: hosting a small webpage for your thoughts
I really love the pricing model, refreshing:

> thoughts.page is free for anyone who makes less than $40,000 USD/year, and costs $5/month otherwise.

mthld··on From nuclear fallout shelter to data center (Paris)
They aren’t even close to Digital Ocean in terms of quality of service, support, performances or documentation. They are more like OVH, another french provider.

A lot of software limitations of their products aren’t documented, an example: don’t expect to put more than 40k files in one single object storage bucket. It’s written nowhere and when you’ll start encountering strange errors with your apps you’ll have to deal with the support team. First you need to pass the triage level where people have no clue about whatever is technical, then after a few days you will go higher in the chain and finally be redirected at someone in charge of the production who will announce you that kind of limitation.

Disclaimer: I’ve been a customer since the very start of Scaleway (attracted by the low prices), then got dissatisfied a lot and asked my account being deleted last week.

mthld··on Chinese activist Ai Weiwei says Credit Suisse closing foundation's bank account
You are completely true about China, and the bipartisan cooperation Switzerland is working on must cease. But alas, it’s not the trend. The Swiss government is even inviting China police investigators to come over and lead their investigations on China nationals directly on Swiss land. The whole situation is a shame, economics are indeed the reason behind all this.
