mrcartmeneses··on Mitochondrial signal transduction (2022)
If that was true then how would any other single celled organism be able to exist?
mrcartmeneses··on Mitochondrial signal transduction (2022)
They tend to concentrate in muscle cells, so fat cells themselves will not help much
mrcartmeneses··on Mitochondrial signal transduction (2022)
The more the merrier, yes. I’m an amateur road cyclist and most of my training is spent in the lower heart-rate “zones” trying to train my mitochondria. The theory is that for endurance sports the key variable is your mitochondria’s capacity to use oxygen and fuel to produce ATP.

Further, if the mitochondria is being asked to make more ATP than it can aerobically, then it will skip the final respiratory step and respire without oxygen (anaerobically). This causes a build up of lactate in the cells that is not tolerated above a certain level, I believe due to it raising acidity levels in the cell.

You’ll often hear athletes and coaches talk about lactate threshold and Functional Threshold Power (FTP). This is all to do with mitochondria function.

Do you mean cell membranes? Animals such as humans do not have cell walls outside of their cell membranes like many bacteria, plants, fungi etc.

For real. I was talking to an academic friend who claims that she doesn’t do politics then I had to remind her about the 5 steps she uses when she wants to get someone fired (starts with creating negative narratives then gets worse from there)

mrcartmeneses··on Royal Mail owners agree to £5B takeover offer
This is so depressing. If it was publicly owned I’d love to see Royal Mail replicate Amazon Marketplace. The government could even legislate against first preference so Amazon cannot penalise sellers for offering goods for a lower price on alternative platforms. Reducing the 40-50% cut Amazon takes from each sale would go a way to reducing inflation and put money in the government coffers at the same time.

That’s called deliberately “running down” a service so it can be sold off on the cheap to your friends. Same thing happened with water and rail privatisation in the UK. When the railways were finally privatised there were several fatal train disasters that lead to the rail network being re-nationalised as Network Rail with the train “operators” now working under a franchise model. These usually make a huge loss that is then subsidised by the government. The franchises are sometimes owned by foreign governments and used as a way to subsidise foreign rail services. Sometimes the franchises are re-nationalised again, such as in the case of services on the East Coast Mainline, and then are suddenly profitable again under public ownership.

It all makes me wonder whether natural monopolies that provide essential public services can ever be run better by a profit making company with little to no democratic oversight.

This is great but… isn’t there something fundamentally eye-straining about capturing media at a given 'interocular' distance and then displaying it to a person at their own individual and different 'interocular' distance?

Interocular, meaning distance between a pair of eyes/lenses

It’s really harsh that Katalin Karikó got such a backlash for calling academia like it is in her book.

Academics are as much courtiers these days as they are researchers.

mrcartmeneses··on Study Finds 268% Higher Failure Rates for Agile Software Projects
That’s pretty much the entire promise of capital A Agile (Scrum, Safe etc). It provides a framework for people without any knowledge or passion for software development to micromanage software engineers while ignoring agile principles and not bothering to conduct user research or to investigate product-market-fit or do anything else that might be worth doing other than creating extremely loose requirements they pulled out of the ether on a bi-weekly basis. The argument used to refute this is usually that people aren’t doing agile right and if only the people and companies were more competent and or did MORE Agile then things would be fine. Generally speaking successful tech companies don’t often put unskilled dispassionate middle managers in charge of software projects and don’t often use Agile processes

Software development is a lot like photography. If your work sucks it’s because the engineer/photographer isn’t close enough to the subject/user/business goal. Agile tends to silo engineers away from their ideal motivations (users/business goals) in favour of meeting the needs of the egos of management.

One case in point was a hedge fund who had increased their engineering team by a factor of 10 because they couldn’t get any work done after the Agile people took over. Their productivity had stabilised at a pre-agile /10 level. I was part of a group of consultants brought in to build them something because they were so unproductive. The consultancy’s solution was to do MORE Agile. So we ended up building a large but not very useful set of features instead of doing the smaller, more technically complex and much more useful feature. We completed the work on time only because of the generous bonuses offered to the outsourced developers. I believe it was unlikely to be worthwhile for the hedge fund.

mrcartmeneses··on The Nonprofit Industrial Complex and the Corruption of the American City
The key problem here is that by privatising government services in the form of a non-profit there ceases to be proper democratic oversight of the organisations involved.

The possible solutions are therefore very obvious, either bring these services back into direct local government control or in the case of a tenants association require it to be tenant-owned and democratically governed.

mrcartmeneses··on Daily cannabis use overtakes drinking in US first
India and Jamaica come to mind, but one had their GDP drained from 23% to just 4% of global GDP by British colonialism and the other is a former slave colony so those examples might have rather more significant downward pressure on productivity other than cannabis
mrcartmeneses··on Daily cannabis use overtakes drinking in US first
Relative to alcohol this is probably a good thing but I think most people grossly underestimate the negative impact of daily cannabis use. I’ve seen many people slowly deteriorate. Cannabis psychosis is no fun at all
mrcartmeneses··on Nevada parents wrongfully accused of child abuse file lawsuit against hospital
Just a housekeeping note: it seems a lot of the arguments in this thread have entrenched into parents rights vs child’s rights.

In my jurisdiction Children have rights and parents have responsibilities, and so it should be.

mrcartmeneses··on Nevada parents wrongfully accused of child abuse file lawsuit against hospital
This statement seems to be based on a false premise that foster care is bad care (it is often very good care where I originate from, UK) and ignores the fact that sometimes parents kill their children and that there are many children in desperate need of help.

The greater problem with the CPS or similar agencies is underfunding. This leads to families only having dealings with them when the circumstances are suspected of being dire, rather than CPS having the resources to support parents in a meaningful way over a meaningful period of time. Such meaningful support helps to reduce the need for more drastic interventions and allows social workers to have much more knowledge of the families they are helping and of when interventions are needed.

Singapore isn’t safe “because cameras” it’s safe because it has high social mobility, social housing, high levels of education, high levels of income equality and is generally wealthy and much wealthier than its neighbours.

And also it’s a police state where you get sentenced to death for drug smuggling and can be punished for doing drugs in another country while on holiday if you are a citizen, for example.

To the naive, Singapore is a paradise, but once you visit for long enough you realise it’s just a super nice prison and it’s not very fun being with the other lags
