mrbgty··on 30 Is Not the New 20 - TED Talk
"80 percent of life’s most defining moments take place by age 35."

Even if they've somehow statistically observed that to be the case that doesn't mean it's required.

mrbgty··on Always Be Coding – How to Land an Engineering Job
I've often wished software dev interviews were as simple as passing a test I took on my own time and didn't have to share the results until I passed.
mrbgty··on Growing By Shrinking
Well of course it sounds bad when you put it that way (using all caps when quoting him)
mrbgty··on Home office produces hardest workers
Why is it the managers that have to figure it out rather than individual employees figuring out for themselves what makes the most sense?

To be fair it the individual, their team and manager should know when working remotely is and isn't working on a case by case basis

mrbgty··on Steve Jobs' exchange with Palm CEO Ed Colligan
the that's how "business is practiced" argument and "competition is dirty and messy" doesn't mean that's the way it has to be or that its the best way.

What's appalling is the fact that people in power are attempting to take power away from individual contributors who need these types of checks and balances; that is to be able to leave one company and join another for better working conditions/wage/purpose if the market is to work effectively.

Is that leaf icon on the sign up button some sort of standard icon now for sign ups? I'm not sure I understand it.
mrbgty··on Amazon Instant Video on Apple iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch
This is awesome but still only available if you've got Wifi access.
mrbgty··on Bring Back the 40-hour work week (March 2012)
In Japan, working yourself to death is common enough that they have a word for it: karoshi

mrbgty··on How to Crack the Toughest Coding Interviews
Personally, I don't really get this type of interview. For one it sounds like they've pretty much standardized it for all developers with little insight into how a new candidate might fit into an existing team best.

Also, it simply does not reflect in anyway what it will be like to work there or what it will be like to work with that person. One key reason is that the interviewer asks questions they already have the answer to and that unbalances things and results in an inaccurate analysis.

In real life, none of the people in the room would have the answers and they'd all be working together to solve the problem.

These people come and interview all day. The team would be better off just having that person tag along with them and work on real problems together all day.

mrbgty··on How to Crack the Toughest Coding Interviews
Nope.
mrbgty··on U.S. banks told to make plans for preventing collapse
Sure but that's kind of irrelevant since by that logic everyone is a parasite by force and not by choice.
mrbgty··on U.S. banks told to make plans for preventing collapse
"You're a real person in real society where Entrepreneurs(with a big E) get subsidized security, roads, mail, water, food, electricity, education, health care, etc."

Just because they get those things, doesn't mean it's the best way to get them, or that they wouldn't prefer to get them in some other way.

mrbgty··on How a Mexican Drug Cartel Makes Its Billions
Why would the largest consumer (US) purchase drugs from the drug cartels if it were legal in the US and could be sold at every 7-11?

The drug cartels would lose a lot of the revenue which makes them powerful.

mrbgty··on We work a 4-day week and just raised $4.75m
Interesting that they point out a 9-6 hour work day the other 4 days. If you believe in being flexible and not forcing employees to work so much then why enforce 9-6 on the other 4 days?
mrbgty··on Heirs to Old Money Plunge Into Tech
The first person they mention left an energy company to focus on making a service that helps businesses manage their mobile applications.

I don't know, this doesn't excite me. I would be more interested if the people with the resources focused those resources on improving energy technology.

mrbgty··on Your body wasn’t built to last: a lesson from human mortality rates
I'm curious. What backs up the idea that the average number of children per individual will be 2 regardless of reproductive lifespan?

It seems that I've seen a somewhat(?) common pattern among people who have young families and get divorced that often times have another family (+2 children) when they re-marry.

mrbgty··on Google Awarded Driverless Vehicle Patent
Keep in mind that they probably submitted this to the patent office 3 years ago
mrbgty··on Elevator Algorithms
Elevators should be able to see with a camera a percentage of the floor that is visible from the ceiling. Using this percentage (in addition to or just by weight), the elevator should be able to determine whether the elevator is full.

When the elevator is full, it should not stop for people who have pressed buttons not inside the elevator.

mrbgty··on The Messy Art Of UX Sketching
This looks a lot more like drawing than what I would consider sketching. To me, sketching would use a single pen/pencil/marker and look much uglier.
mrbgty··on Apple Submits Updated Campus 2 Plans to Cupertino
When I worked for HP, they were constantly trying to shut down buildings or do things which made the office spaces less desirable to employees to save money.

It's good to see Apple making things better.

mrbgty··on Take a short break in a quiet place
The tone is likely a reaction to the pressure that has been placed for so long on people to work more. Forget the amount of pressure bosses place on their people to work more. Colleagues, friends, and relatives all do the same. When they don't see you working a lot, they project an idea that you're lazy.

At least that has been my observation of the general mindset at least over the last 30 years.

mrbgty··on How I Quickly Test and Validate Startup Ideas
I don't really know what I'm talking about but I'm not sure this type of card game translates well online. In my opinion, the site design is a problem. The problem I'm seeing is that there's nothing making me want to learn how to play a new card game. I have no idea what the answer to that problem is but there's got to be some motivator on the site, I think, to get people to want to learn it. I'm sure once the game is learned people will love it. Maybe you could look at techniques other card games/board games use to get people interested? If you made a digital version of the game, you may also be able to sell the physical card game online?

The site is too red.

mrbgty··on I quit my job last March and it was a bad idea.
"The youngest self made billionaire was 23 when it happened for him, and that was with a ton of connections. Relax, you still have 3 more years before you're a failure."
