monadic3··on Judge: Citibank isn't entitled to $500M it sent to various creditors last August
This is not the only class of accidental-but-plausible transactions. Why not just use "reason to believe the payment is valid" directly rather than singling out creditors?
monadic3··on New Model M Is an American-Made Keyboard That Puts a Spring Back in Your Typing
I can't remember a single time typing speed has impacted my work, fwiw, and it's much harder to hurt your wrist with the longer travel.
monadic3··on I am a heroin user. I do not have a drug problem
There's got to be more to this because even though I consume prolific amounts of caffeine I do not experience any pain on cessation. Yet, many of my coworkers do feel this pain.
monadic3··on Il Maestro: Federico Fellini and the lost magic of cinema
What is the point of counterfactuals like this other than shitting on Coming to America? Rude.
monadic3··on Epic Games steps up Apple fight with EU antitrust complaint
I can't tell if you offering this as something that's sane to do or not. I think you should absolutely be able to install the software you want in your lexus; the built-in software is often terrible (yes, including tesla).
monadic3··on GitHub Deceased User Policy
Their activity detection does not inspire confidence. Google is an incredibly bad proxy for user activity.

Edit: downvoted but no substantive responses? Guidelines are for thee but not for mee, I guess.

monadic3··on What went wrong with the Texas power grid?
Why would you use car batteries? Seems like a terrible fit for the job of daily charge and discharge.
monadic3··on What went wrong with the Texas power grid?
That's a failing of gas furnaces. I don't know why you'd design a system without them except to breed dependency.
monadic3··on What went wrong with the Texas power grid?
Ahh, I see, power companies have simply failed their customers and certainly will receive their commupance.
monadic3··on What went wrong with the Texas power grid?
Gas heaters still require electricity for basic management.

I'd imagine heaters have batteries for specifically this case. If they don't, it's frankly a miracle if we don't lose anyone, and someone needs to get prosecuted.

monadic3··on Comparison of Rust async and Linux thread context switch time and memory use
I'll admit it's a bit disconcerting not getting a reply but I'll get over it.
monadic3··on Pine64 Unveils Quartz64 SBC
What's the concern?
monadic3··on What I Worked On
> But there's nothing like writing a book about something to help you learn it.

This is the motto of silicon valley if I've ever heard it—all the good parts and bad parts smushed into a singular brand. The bad parts are pure narcissism; the good parts are more or less asking "am I doing harm by investing in this predatory business"? Unfortunately, the answer is mostly "yes".

monadic3··on Comparison of Rust async and Linux thread context switch time and memory use
Sure, but I didn't think anything about async functions implied running tasks. Isn't it just syntactic sugar over futures? You certainly don't need to use the tokio runtime in order to use async functions.

So, it's not clear why you'd abandon the async syntax just because you're compute bound.

monadic3··on Apple redirects Google Safe Browsing traffic through proxy servers in iOS 14.5
Why would you collude when you have shared incentives? Capital is perfectly capable of shutting out smaller competitors without it, and in fact we've seen this for decades now.
monadic3··on 8-Year-Old Calls Out NPR for Lack of Dinosaur Stories
"Real politics" would involve considerably more aggressive movement from the democrats to shut out the republicans for 2022. I see the republicans gaining the house a the current trajectory, with nothing more than a one-time, means-tested, under-delivering $2000 check, let alone more aggressive policy on the horizon to address economic crisis.
monadic3··on Comparison of Rust async and Linux thread context switch time and memory use
Which rust async runtime are you referring to?
monadic3··on Comparison of Rust async and Linux thread context switch time and memory use
Sorry, what does tokio have to do with "async"? The default implementation uses posix threads, no?
monadic3··on Hello system, a FreeBSD-based OS designed to resemble Mac
Just use the built-in readline bindings: option-delete should delete the last word you typed.

Personally, the PC keybindings are completely alien to me and make no sense and bring my productivity to a stand-still. Without my readline bindings text editing is a straight-up chore.

monadic3··on 8-Year-Old Calls Out NPR for Lack of Dinosaur Stories
Politics ain't gonna be boring again for a while yet, though I can understand why you might push that narrative. Trump was a mere symptom of political dysfunction that includes both parties. Until our government can actually address the needs of its people we're going to continue swapping back and forth between the two parties.
monadic3··on Minesweeper automates root cause analysis as a first-line defense against bugs
While that's a convincing narrative, the idea of a true root cause is fallacious.
monadic3··on José Valim Reveals “Project Nx” (Numerical Elixir) [audio]
I've been porting code across platforms and most languages cannot embed themselves into arbitrary runtimes, for technical or political reasons. Had to go with rust rather than higher level languages.

If you're running a server—sure, BEAM me up.

monadic3··on Pseudophilosophy encourages confused, self-indulgent thinking
This article is pretty standard analytic bilk: demand readers use your definitions of words and complain about the decline of western civilization when they don't.
monadic3··on Starting Over: A FOSS proposal for a new type of OS for a new type of computer
> This makes systems designed never to be shut down and turned back on again

Not necessarily; you just need a way to bootstrap the memory. Plan9 is pretty easy to run a fully functional terminal from memory/network access. Live CDs work pretty well, too.

monadic3··on Study finds childhood diet has lifelong impact
There is more to the story of childhood diet than simple narratives of cheap nutrition, though that certainly plays a massive role. Consider, for instance, eating disorders, including some which may be mistaken for playing into aforementioned narrative, such as binge eating (a common symptom among eating disorders in general and often co-morbid with eating comforting but "bad" food) and picky eating (such as ARFID, also correlated with eating comforting but "bad" food). In neither situation is the consumption of the "bad" food the cause or most even the most harmful symptom.
monadic3··on Desirable streets: where do people prefer to walk?
If you're referring to the tenderloin, there's a larger issue there with obstruction of sidewalks. I'm certainly not arguing these should be 'cleaned' or 'swept', though, just pointing out that 'crime' is rather incidental to the reasons why someone might avoid the area.
monadic3··on Localize your cat at home with BLE beacon, ESP32s, and Machine Learning
The term for this is "break-away collar" if that helps.
monadic3··on Rust-Analyzer Architecture
Still waiting on my favorite jetbrains feature—show type of selected expression. Probably the single most used IDE feature in my toolbox when I used scala.
monadic3··on WallStreetBets vs WallStreet: It's not about the money anymore
You can't expect a reasonable person to read the TOS. They have a reasonable expectation to get the same service as any other day, even if this conflicts with Robinhood's business model, unless Robinhood made their expected behavior abundantly clear in advance.
