mobilemidget··on FreeBSD considers Rust in the base system
Isn't this what forks are meant for? Fork FreeBSD to RustBSD and experiment?

Personally I'd prefer if it stays out of FreeBSD. All languages with package systems turn into a horrible quality over time. PHP Composer, Python Pip, node NPM and so on, initially it seems effective but the version dependency/issue hells are true nightmares. And I fear rust with cargo is going to be the same. Maybe I'm wrong, and in case it does go into base, I really hope I'm wrong so the quality of FreeBSD doesn't go down...

mobilemidget··on Comparing HTTP/3 vs. HTTP/2 Performance (2020)
Many providers limit or block UDP because of the history with DDOS attacks.
mobilemidget··on Comparing HTTP/3 vs. HTTP/2 Performance (2020)
I prefer TCP for web traffic rather than UDP.
mobilemidget··on Okay, I Like WezTerm
same here, I just bookmarked it for now
mobilemidget··on Show HN: Simple Mbtiles Server – Self-host the entire planet of OpenStreetMaps
90 is okay, when I did years ago I was on 300+ but it doesn't really state which zoom level is available.
mobilemidget··on Malaysia asks Microsoft, CrowdStrike to consider covering losses from outage
I'm not a fan of neither but nobody forced people to use microsoft or crowd strike products?
mobilemidget··on Is regulated BGP security coming?
Ah I was only thinking hosting providers/consumer ISP yes, not transit parties. But then they aren't also the source imho. It would help already quite a bit if the parties that can, do the source checking.

I think many providers now also limit UDP which might become an issue when http/3 gets more adopted.

mobilemidget··on Is regulated BGP security coming?
Can you elaborate a little?

I mean any ISP can check if a packet leaving their network is actually a network they have under their control, routing doesn't have anything to do with that?

mobilemidget··on Is regulated BGP security coming?
I think mandatory ip source checking would be a nice addition too for many ISPs that still don't, and now allow tons of crap spoofing DoS attack traffic.

Do you have any good recommendation for such 1U server with 32 slots? Thanks
mobilemidget··on Ask HN: Should we stop posting X links on HN?
True but my memory doesn't seem to tell me which sites are paywalled upon reading the links often.
mobilemidget··on Ask HN: Should we stop posting X links on HN?
Those could or should already be prepended in the title with PAYWALL or alike, so one can already at point of reading the title decide not to click on it.
mobilemidget··on LoRA Learns Less and Forgets Less
I addressed the same in a previous 'lora' post on HN. For me the name is already reserved for the radio telecommunication meaning. Nothing going to change that.
mobilemidget··on GDPR: Is It Worth It?
They are easier to click now, first sites with cookie wall setups were often bad pattern, hard to disagree with non essential cookies and so on, they basically forced you or tried to trick you into accepting all cookies, essential, marketing, social and what not. Now you see more sites that have default setting to only allow essential.

But regulator obviously didn't know how cookies work, what they are good for, what they are bad for and whatever they try to outlaw now gets correlated via different means. User-agent, ip and some other browser fingerprinting.

So bottomline, we have to click once more (or every time, when private/incognito mode) when you visit a site.

mobilemidget··on Show HN: LazyVim for Ambitious Developers
cool, good to hear. I bookmarked the page indeed and a mailinglist for the interested I think is a good idea.

In the meantime, reading https://www.lazyvim.org too and messing around with some plugins.

mobilemidget··on Show HN: LazyVim for Ambitious Developers
Hi Mr Philips,

I liked the first chapters quite a bit, and trying it coming from a history of vi/vim/sublime/vs where I never took the time for proper configuration. However I'm not a big fan of subscriptions (Patreon) is there a way I can do a one time payment for the book, or is it far from being finished?

Thanks

mobilemidget··on Ask HN: What is the current (Apr. 2024) gold standard of running an LLM locally?
I guess you have a webserver there on your pihole?

Create a vhost for reddit.com, add reddit.com to your hosts file to point to the webserver (or setup a stub in the dns to the vhost webserver), and do a redirect to old.reddit.com on your webserver vhost.

mobilemidget··on Cloudflare loses 22% of its domains in Freenom .tk shutdown
There are tons of shady websites hiding behind cloudflare's services. Some used .tk domains too but just in general, many shady websites are hiding behind Cloudflare and at least I know from personal experience if you contact cloud flare about it, they pretend not to be home.

"We do not host the website" was always there response, while that is perhaps technically true, arguing if they shut down the reverse proxying for that website it would be at least offline, never worked.

mobilemidget··on Botanical gardens can cool city air by an average of 5°C
Well there are definitions, but indeed, not strict, as they do differ quite a bit who or where you ask this question.
mobilemidget··on Botanical gardens can cool city air by an average of 5°C
It doesn't really mention that. And seems to differ between US and EU already, one source for example, says,

"Forest is a land area of more than 0.5 ha, with a tree canopy cover of more than 10%, which is not primarily under agricultural or other specific non-forest land use."

mobilemidget··on Botanical gardens can cool city air by an average of 5°C
Accidentally I recently looked up when a bunch of trees are, or can be called a forest. Which I learned is minimal 500 square meters.
mobilemidget··on Starbucks $10 pork-flavored coffee
The flavour might not be crazy, as you write about the rubs and breakfasts. But paying 10 dollars for a coffee, is crazy in my opinion.
mobilemidget··on YouTube dominates TV streaming in US, per Nielsen's latest report
Besides the regular gaming content on twitch there is a bunch of weird stuff. I noticed there is this ASMR type content where people lick plastic ears in front of a microphone. The amount of views they get, concurrent streams was mind boggling for me.

But regarding 'sexy' content they recently made some policy updates, they initially hammered down on such content, but I think it hurted their income stream.

mobilemidget··on Rotten Apple
So when you sign up for Apple Arcade, which strangely you dont use? Why sign up for it? But then it's okay that you need to have your iPad to signup, but when you want to cancel it is strange that you need your iPad.

I understand it would be nice if you can login to a website and cancel, but reads as if you make your mistake of not taken your iPad, or cancelling in time a fault of others.

mobilemidget··on It’s Official, Apple Kills Web Apps in the EU
Which was about same time or just after adobe, the author of flash recommended everybody to stop using it.
mobilemidget··on The Carry-on-Baggage Bubble Is About to Pop
Booked a flight from Amsterdam to Venice the other day. It was easyJet, did not include luggage for cargo hold or hand luggage. The return ticket was about 90 euro. To add hand luggage was about 90 euro each way. It is cheaper to bring a 100+ kg person than a 5-10 kg hand luggage.
mobilemidget··on Setting up a secondary Pi-Hole on my home network
Unfortunately still no FreeBSD port for pi-hole.

This post did make me setup a void-zones-tools BSD jail on the LAN and testing it now. Seems to be very similar just without web admin.
