mmwelt··on Quick VPN Setup with AWS Lightsail and WireGuard
Such hotels may simply be blocking UDP traffic entirely.
mmwelt··on Removing support for forwarded ports
To have a fixed internet point of presence, when frequently travelling. Otherwise, all kinds of services start complaining that you're logging in from a new location.
mmwelt··on Killer whales wreck boat in latest attack off Spain
In case anyone's wondering, this is a TV series:

mmwelt··on Functionality that has been deprecated in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9
Screen sharing seems to be a difficult problem to resolve. Zoom only just resolved this recently[1], Webex has been promising a fix for a while[2], and Skype still hasn't done anything[3].

mmwelt··on Word-processor idiot (Japanese expression)
This is often called 提笔忘字, translated to English as character amnesia:

mmwelt··on Wine 8.0
About IrfanView: I've found nomacs to be a good Linux native replacement.
mmwelt··on The 5GHz “Problem” for Wi-Fi Networks: DFS (2018)
I've found the main problem is when on a DFS channel and doing something real-time -- a Zoom/Skype call, for instance. Very noticeable then.

Also, don't use hidden SSIDs on a DFS channel: https://badfi.com/blog/2016/2/15/yet-another-reason-avoid-us...

mmwelt··on Jami: Share, Message, Call freely and privately
I tried this a couple of times but the main problem I encountered was: on Android, it doesn't seem to be possible to delete a conversation without also deleting the contact.
mmwelt··on Unredacter: Never use pixelation as a redaction technique
Hm. Pixelation may still work well with other languages, such as Chinese, though.
mmwelt··on Obese People Burn Calories Less Efficiently, Even After Weight Loss Surgery
What is interesting is that, "even after weight loss surgery, a formerly obese person would need to eat far fewer calories than a normal-weight person in order to maintain their weight loss."

In other words the MF didn't change even after reducing adipose tissue!

mmwelt··on OneDrive Ad in Windows 11 Logout Menu
Doesn't Apple do similar things, trying to get people to use iCloud?
mmwelt··on Patch OpenSSL on November 1 to avoid “critical” security vulnerability
One probably important project that uses it is OpenConnect, as the VPN servers would probably be listening on a port reachable on the open internet.
mmwelt··on Patch OpenSSL on November 1 to avoid “critical” security vulnerability
> And by widely leveraged, I mean almost completely ubiquitous, if you’re using HTTPS, chances are you’re using OpenSSL. Almost everyone is.

This is probably a bit of an exaggeration. There are quite a few other SSL implementations that actually are also "widely leveraged"[1]. In particular, LibreSSL was forked and cleaned up after Heartbleed. Google uses BoringSSL. GnuTLS is widely used and unrelated to OpenSSL.

mmwelt··on Longevity of Recordable CDs, DVDs and Blu-Rays (2020)
So, perhaps use acid-free paper and print the data as QR codes using a laser printer?
mmwelt··on iPhones and action discoverability
Is this a reference to "You're holding it wrong"[1]?

Similar offerings, but based in Switzerland:

mmwelt··on GoodbyeDPI: Deep Packet Inspection circumvention utility
Doesn't work in China, though:

mmwelt··on Reasons to ditch Chrome and use Firefox
I'm not the person you were replying to, but a few broken sites I've noticed are:

    web.skype.com
Jitsi Meet (https://meet.jit.si/) -- apparently no support for insertable streams
    stuff.co.nz from outside NZ
mmwelt··on Apple Maps location scan spikes WiFi latency every 60 seconds
What helped me was not using a hidden SSID. Apparently, with hidden networks, the computer has to actively probe for the network, but passive probes don't affect latency as much.
mmwelt··on Wireless is a trap (2020)
Wouldn't be a problem if you have a Wireguard connection to your router.
mmwelt··on I stopped to watch kids playing at recess – security was called
I wonder what the legal position is on this situation? Could this form of discrimination somehow be justified legally?

mmwelt··on The Art of Plain Text (2015)
Quite so. Much of what the article says is interesting, but nowadays, I'd say using UTF-8 would be more reasonable.
mmwelt··on The Art of Plain Text (2015)
What's wrong with using UTF-8? Disregarding that I may want to write documents in a language that needs non-ASCII characters, I may want to use names of people or places that use non-ASCII characters.
mmwelt··on Barrier: Share mouse and keyboard between computers
Would be nice to have an Android client too!
mmwelt··on The Windows 11 taskbar is an annoying step backward
From the page you linked to:

> The tweaker is designed for Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10.

Windows 11 probably isn't supported!

mmwelt··on Iceraven – Firefox for Android fork with more add-ons and configuration options
Iceraven also has an option to prevent frequent tab reloading[1], a problem that many users of Firefox have on Android[2].

mmwelt··on Tinyssh
While it is good to have another alternative, I think Dropbear SSH[1] is also being used very widely.

mmwelt··on Vibration API
Would be useful for this: https://busysimulator.com/

Except that there's no support for the vibration API on Firefox for Android.
