mmwelt··on Nomad, communicate off-grid mesh, forward secrecy and extreme privacy
The concept is interesting, but a problem is communicating with others who use iOS/iPadOS devices. They typically can't use this kind of app, because of limitations imposed by the OS[1]. Then, because of networking effects, it becomes very difficult for most people to use.

mmwelt··on Debian's /tmpest in a teapot
The article describes how to change the default:

> Users who want /tmp to remain on disk can override the upstream default with `systemctl mask tmp.mount`. To stop periodic cleanups of /tmp and /var/tmp users can run `touch /etc/tmpfiles.d/tmp.conf`.

mmwelt··on wxHexEditor — a Free Hex Editor / Disk Editor for Huge Files or Devices
Looks useful, but the last release was end of 2017.
mmwelt··on Flightradar24's new GPS jamming map
The GPS jamming map linked to in the article[1] discusses this somewhat, in the "About the data" box:

    - ADS-B messages include position information from Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), like GPS, Galileo, GLONASS, BeiDou, etc.
    - It is not possible to directly measure GNSS interference, but we do calculate the NIC (Navigation integrity category) for ADS-B messages.
    - The NIC value encodes the quality and consistency of navigational data received by the aircraft.
    - Poor NIC values alone might indicate a problem with an aircraft’s equipment or unfavorable positioning. However, when observed in multiple aircraft in close proximity during the same time frame, it suggests the presence of a radio signal interfering with normal GNSS operation.

mmwelt··on Wine 9.0 RC5 – Run Windows Applications on Linux, BSD, Solaris and macOS
PDF-XChange Editor[1] is a very good PDF viewer and annotator. Unfortunately, no Linux equivalent comes close, IMHO. Fortunately, it runs very well on Wine[2].

XMeters used to be very good, but does not work on Windows 11.

Task Manager is very limited, unfortunately. You only get CPU usage in the notification area.

Rainmeter is quite pretty, but the displays (skins) seem to only work on the desktop.

The author of the article has iStart on the menu bar, so the performance indicators are visible even when application windows are covering the desktop. The GNOME extension system-monitor-next[1], as mentioned in the article, is also similar.

Does anyone have recommendations for something similar on Windows?

mmwelt··on Google confirms they will disable uBlock Origin in Chrome in 2024
Fortunately, the MV3 implementation in Firefox has the necessary tweaks to continue supporting add-ons like uBlock Origin[1]. So, even when MV2 is eventually dropped in Firefox, ad-blocking add-ons written for Firefox will continue to be able to work without restrictions.

Things are changing with Windows. Windows 10 will only be supported until 14 Oct 2025[1], and Windows 11 explicitly does not support some relatively recent hardware configurations, e.g. 7th generation Intel processors[2].

I'm not the person you asked, but one way would be to mount the backup drive just for the backup, then unmount it once the backup is complete. This would limit the time the backup is exposed to ransomware.
mmwelt··on Big leap for hard drive capacities: 32 TB HAMR drives due soon, 40tb on horizon
Restoring backups on a 32TB drive would also take a very long time! Other comments have mentioned that it would probably take more than 13 hours to fill the drive.

On a related note, remirroring or rebuilding a 32TB RAID drive would probably take days.

mmwelt··on Microsoft Edge removes ability to delete Sync Data from Cloud
I reckon because it's not possible to pay for the product directly, Firefox is getting less financial support than it could. For example, I may not want to support many of the goals of the Mozilla foundation, but paying for a product that I'm using (Firefox) sounds reasonable.
mmwelt··on Microsoft Edge removes ability to delete Sync Data from Cloud
Is there actually any way to pay for Firefox directly? I don't need their VPN service, but would probably be willing to pay something for Firefox.
