mkopinsky··on Dropbox opening my docs?
Oh, and FTR, Excel gives a warning before opening the file. So they at least have thought through this vector (if you want to call it that).

The HTML, DOC, and XLS files all have identical structure (though different content). They are all HTML, and Honey Docs is relying on Word/excel's parsing the HTML in those files to fetch the image (a 1px gif).

I downloaded the credit card Honeydoc. The content looks like:

    Brian Baker 4556767839126624<br />

Even if RMS started from a pragmatic standpoint, his position has clearly moved far beyond pragmatism.

Break me off a piece of that KitKat... ecosystem?
mkopinsky··on Map of America's Racial Segregation
But you are also likely to live in the same neighborhood as your friends. So while living in a racially diverse neighborhood may not cause you to interact with people of other other races, it may be indicative if your group of friends is racially diverse.
mkopinsky··on What happens when you use a standing desk for two years
How does the ergonomics of this work? The intellectual part of writing code may be improved, but physically typing the code while on the couch can't be a good thing.

(Typed while laying in bed, in a way that would certainly screw up my wrists if I did this long term.)

While the course is running (at least for the course I'm currently enrolled in) every video has a download icon at the far right.

At times (for me), the time-based nature of coursera is a very good thing. If I know that I need to complete a homework by 1am Sunday night, which means I need to finish watching this week's videos by Thursday night, that means there's a chance I'll actually do so. Without that deadline (and with no money or grade on the line) HN or Reddit or other timewasters are far too tempting.

Thank you. I saw this article and had a feeling of "Hmm, where have I seen this before? The URL says 2013, but this is definitely old..." I think it must have Eric's flickr.

(Link somehow got truncated; it should be http://www.flickr.com/photos/walkingsf/sets/7215762481267496... )

Riding the subway means that as a white New Yorker, you will twice a day share a room with a black person. Whether you interact with them is another story - I'd venture that most people never say a word to anyone in the subway. To understand (likelihood of) interaction, neighborhood maps are one piece of the story, as would be (as mentioned elsewhere in the thread) workplace data.
mkopinsky··on Unsupervised joke generation from big data
This provides a possible source for inspiration: Perhaps 9gag is not actually full of dumb people, but of dumb bots.

Faith in humanity restored?

If only it were so easy.

Even at chain stores in the US, one of the people behind the counter is a pharmacist who went to grad school for five years studying this stuff. (The person actually giving you your medication may only be a pharmacy tech, but they have to have a pharmacist behind the counter whenever they're open.)

More common than flu, or the common cold? Really?

Perhaps you need to add a modifier such as "chronic" to your statement?

Do you have a comparable number for non-profit colleges? While I doubt it's 2.9, I'm sure it's still high.
mkopinsky··on The 1-bit interface
Is this the case even with a large difference between fast and slow? I would imagine that there's a large intuitive difference between 1 Hz and 5 Hz, for example.

You already upvoted him. No need to comment to that effect.
mkopinsky··on NSA's Backdoor Key from Lotus Notes
Oh, people noticed that they disappeared. There were all kinds of vigils in support of at least one of the women. (Apparently, the kidnapper was even at some of these. This in my mind was the most bizarre fact of the whole story.)
mkopinsky··on If you didn't cancel the credit card you used for linode.com, now is the time
Credit utilization is another element though. It's bad if you have too big a line of credit, but good if you have a historically low ratio of (debt/available credit).

Or the dreaded meeting invite for "One-to-one". I remember the first time I had one of those, and hmm, it also included someone from HR. How is that one-to-one again?
mkopinsky··on GeoGuessr: Guess the location from Google street view
Question is, were you dropped somewhere with or without a smartphone? :-)

My personal rule is absolutely no googling. I've been tempted to print out a list of all the phone area codes and take it with me in my virtual alien-ship-to-random-destinations since that is something I could actually do were I preparing for such a scenario.

mkopinsky··on A “simple” 3rd grade problem
If anything, the inside should have to make more revolutions. Since the whole bike is traveling at 10 MPH, at the point with the smaller radius, you'd need more revolutions to travel that same linear speed.

;-)

mkopinsky··on A “simple” 3rd grade problem
The third option would be to chop off both "wings" and consider it as a square plus two triangles. That is often my instinct when I forget to do it with the mean length of the parallels.

mkopinsky··on Manchester City Council
While in general I approve of the policy here of renaming posts to match the title of the page, the change here done by the mods (to simply "Manchester City Council") makes the whole discussion make no sense. (The original title was "How government sites should be designed".)

mkopinsky··on CRAPCHA: Completely Ridiculous And Phony Captcha that Hassles for Amusement
I don't care if you prevent me from posting for 20 seconds, but if you make my laptop fan spin up, or cause my old computer to get unresponsive, especially if I have no clue why, I'm gonna be upset. I'm used to video sites slowing down the computer slightly, but if a simple blog does it, I'm gonna be confused, and possibly pissed.

If any site grinds my CPU for 20 seconds before letting me post a comment, I am probably never going back again.
