miobrien··on Caesar's Last Breath
This reminds me of a question from my first interview as a college grad: estimate the number of taxis in New York City. I was totally baffled by it.
miobrien··on Virginia Woolf's list-making
Cool! Any other sites this works for?
miobrien··on How I keep myself alive using Golang
Amazing stuff. My three year old son was diagnosed four weeks ago so this really resonates with me.
miobrien··on High Interest Savings Leaderboard
Money market fund.

Treasury Money Market Fund seeks to provide current income while maintaining liquidity and a stable share price of $1 per share.

miobrien··on No bar exam required to practice law in Oregon starting next year
No. The bar exam is an outdated, gatekeeping, hazing mechanism that requires rote memorization and application of blackletter law and is altogether unrelated to the practice of law.

However, it wouldn't hurt to shorten law school from three to two years. The third year is a waste.

miobrien··on I'm sorry I bit you during my job interview (2011)
The ridiculousness of having to send formulaic, bullshit "thank you" emails after interviews.
miobrien··on Ruins of Emperor Nero’s Theater Discovered Near Vatican
Very clever. Definitely didn't occur to me when I was in middle school at the time!
miobrien··on Ozempic Settles the Obesity Debate: It’s Biology over Willpower
Despite the title's bold claim, the article isn't very informative; it really feels like a puff piece for these pharma companies.

One thing that I think is underacknowledged in discussions of weight/fat loss is time horizon. Fad diets don't work. You can't expect to lose 30 lbs in 2 months. Set a longer time horizon. What do you want to weigh in a year (or more)? Reduce your calorie intake gradually. Weigh yourself often. Are you making progress? If not, lower your calories a litle bit more. Keep trying. Try to eat healthy foods, but there's nothing wrong with some "unhealthy" foods. Try to be active and exercise, but you don't need to be a marathon runner or powerlifter. Be fair to yourself. You gained the weight over time, so now you have to lose it over time.

miobrien··on Startups should consider starting their own podcasts
I'm skeptical of the audience for such a podcast. Also, seems like it would require a lot of time that could be used to focus on the actual business. Sure, maybe you could assign someone in marketing to run it, but even then I would make sure it didn't take up too much of that person's time. And for startups with low headcounts, I'm not sure there is such a "marketing" person.
miobrien··on Alamut (Bartol Novel)
> This book was one of the inspirations for the video game series Assassin's Creed.

Interesting. Never heard of this book or author.

miobrien··on The best place to drink is the emptiest bar in the city
Fascinating observation.
miobrien··on Brain Waves Synchronize When People Interact
Fascinating thought.
miobrien··on Better cognitive ability from less snacking of processed carbohydrates
Is the author associated with the LessWrong community?
miobrien··on AI song featuring fake Drake and Weeknd vocals pulled from streaming services
I thought the song was pretty catchy. As a first example of what AI can do in this space, I'm excited at the possibilities -- especially as someone who writes music but can't sing like the Weeknd or rap like Drake. I look at it less as something that's going to replace songwriting and more as another tool.
miobrien··on $335,000 Pay for ‘AI Whisperer’ Jobs Appears in Red-Hot Market

miobrien··on ChatGPT Plus
So far I've only asked very vanilla queries, like explain X abstract concept or write a program that does Y simple thing in Z language. What are examples of queries you want to ask this imaginary SafeSearchOff version? Potentially harmful or illegal stuff? Just curious.
miobrien··on Where does ChatGPT fall on the political compass?
Skip the "establishment media" and check Pool's social media. He's right-wing.

Also, what a person "describes" himself as is worthless. He can say he's a social liberal. He's not.

miobrien··on Digital Gardening in Obsidian
Cool post. Definitely impressed with Obsidian. Not a huge fan of the UI on iOS. For some reason I keep getting drawn back to iOS Notes for ease of use.
miobrien··on Ship of Theseus
It’s a wiki link for an interesting concept. Not sure what the problem is.
miobrien··on Ask HN: Which books have made you a better thinker and problem solver?
Why Buddhism Is True: The Science and Philosophy of Meditation and Enlightenment by Robert Wright

The Art of Living: Vipassana Meditation as Taught by S.N. Goenka by William Hart

miobrien··on Berkshire Hathaway Inc.
I wish more websites/companies realized how effective, practical, and beautiful this design is.
miobrien··on Berkshire Hathaway Inc.
GEICO is a wholly owned subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway that provides coverage for more than 24 million motor vehicles owned by more than 15 million policy holders as of 2017.
miobrien··on Our conscious experience of the world is a memory, says new theory
As Sam Harris phrases it, thoughts and senses are "merely representations" in consciousness. The self, as we perceive it, is a representation in consciousness.
miobrien··on How radical was Rachmaninoff?
Wonderful piece.
miobrien··on Daughter of Putin Propagandist Killed in Car Bomb Outside Moscow
An interesting incident. First, who’s behind? If it’s Ukrainians, that makes Putin look weak. If it’s a Russian inside job, is this a sign of the power struggle Putin is facing? Then again, Putin is the guy who attacked his own citizens to justify his rise to power, so who it could also be him.

Second, Dugin (and by extension his daughter) is a dangerous thinker I don’t know if it’s media hyperbole to say he’s “Putin’s brain” but it certainly seems like Dugins ideas have been implemented: 1) supporting racial tensions in the US, 2) separating the UK from the EU, 3) supporting various far-right politicians, and 4) annexing Ukraine.

miobrien··on Electronic Music: Allen Strange's Classic Book Reissued
Very cool. Thanks for posting!
miobrien··on Taking things less personally
Can you share the lists you mentioned?
miobrien··on Cohost.org
Saw this somewhere else. Anyone more information on it?
miobrien··on Ask HN: Why is Lex Fridman so successful with his “tech” podcasts?
I've wondered this as well - specifically regarding Fridman but also other people who have become popular through social media. (As to the latter, it never ceases to shock me how various YouTube channels can amass hundreds of thousands of subscribers.)

Anyway, as someone mentioned above, he was on Rogan's podcast and fits the Rogan mold of influencer: interested in AI and machine learning, politically neutral, trains in Brazilian jiu jitsu, etc. In fact, I'd describe his style as being a more intellectual Rogan, haha (which is not necessarily a compliment). His popularity has skyrocketed after being on Rogan. However, I'm not sure about his popularity prior to Rogan.

miobrien··on Ask HN: What is the most unique website you’ve come across on the internet?
Wow. What a site!
