miniwark··on WebObjects Overview (2001) [pdf]
I am not sure why this stuff is posted now, but as someone who still need to use WebObjects at work because of a legacy product, we use instead Project Wonder:

https://github.com/wocommunity/wonder

https://wiki.wocommunity.org/

Because Wonder is more or less patched & maintained while WebObjects is in abandonware state since 2008 (and officially since 2016).

miniwark··on Sailing boat rescued by the Götheborg
The two images in the article, taken from the rescued boat. Show indeed than the sails where probably not used. One of the photos even show the sailors at work wile they seems to furl one of the the sail.

Also, the road taken is interested. They could have go to one of the ports of the British islands, like St. Peter Port at Guernsey. But this would have been dangerous. This part of the English Chanel, is full of smalls rock islands, shoals and one of the most dangerous marine currents in the world : The Alderney Race (or Raz Blanchard in french).

miniwark··on I worked at Google for -10 days
Yes your right... Seem like i was wrong. Sorry, I have made a brain fart here.
miniwark··on I worked at Google for -10 days
The "business reasons" by Google are probably completely fake, but we have some pointers from OP who give us the real reason :

- OP is russian

- OP was working at Yandex (who had an history of "strange" relationships with the russian government)

- in December 2022 Vladimir Poutine take over the russian subsidiaries of Yandex (through Alexeï Koudrine) -> more "strange" relationships

- OP received an official offer in December 2022

- Russia invade Ukraine in february 2023

- OP was terminated by Google in the following days in march

I am not Google, but i also would have avoided to hire a russian, just after the start of the war. I bet than all russian potential hire had been terminated the same way during the same period.

Too much red flags to take the risk to hire a potential FSB agent.

miniwark··on Lego violates GPL by keep Blender-based BrickLink Studio source closed (2021)
One the Official Lego help page about the now retired Lego Digital Designer, they recommend to use BrickLink Studio studio instead:

miniwark··on Lego violates GPL by keep Blender-based BrickLink Studio source closed (2021)
For an alternative have a look to LeoCAD:

- compatible with the LDraw Standard

miniwark··on Lego violates GPL by keep Blender-based BrickLink Studio source closed (2021)
BrickLink is owned by the Lego group since 2019.
miniwark··on FreeCAD User Book (2019)
For a good CAD user book i find the one for QCAD very good for learning the basics of CAD drawing (and the Qcad software).

This book is not free (35$), but it's available in multiple languages (english, french, german, italian). Even if you use another CAD software, its a good starting point.

miniwark··on Where has all the Chartreuse gone?
But please know the rules to harvest this plants!

In many place it's totally forbidden, in other places there are specific rules. Too many people are just badly plucking the plants without concerns just to brag than they have made their own liquor.

I you do not know your local rules, then just go buy a bottle.

miniwark··on The idea that life on Earth originated elsewhere is not as far out as it seems
One hypothesis is than the RNA predate DNA and even cells. Imagine a soup of RNA strings who replicate themselves. That said, this auto-replicating RNAs did not have been find on earth. Even an auto-replicating RNA is already too complex to be the fist steep. There may have been pre-RNA auto replicating molecules like TNA (not actually found too).

A path like: (pre-TNA world ?) -> (TNA world ?) -> RNA world -> Ribonucleoprotein world -> Simple cells & viruses with DNA & RNA

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RNA_world https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK26876/ https://www.newscientist.com/article/dn21335-before-dna-befo...

It's one of the steeps before the cells than may have come from outer space because we did not find trace of them on earth. The other hypothesis is than they have disappear since then, because of later steeps in life history like the Great Oxidation Event.

miniwark··on The idea that life on Earth originated elsewhere is not as far out as it seems
The fun part about the panspermia theory is that it's a very old idea first proposed by Anaxagoras (c. 500 – c. 428 BC), a pre-Socratic Greek philosopher.

He had also imagined the concept of a "Cosmic mind" (Nous). If i understand well, for him, this "Cosmic mind" is not really an external metaphysical god, but more a physical part of the universe itself. A mind inside the universe, but isolated from the rest, and who try to organise everything else in the universe (including life).

miniwark··on Crypto exchange Kraken to shut staking service, pay $30M fine in SEC settlement
Kraken have two options for staking on some cryptos assets like ATOM or DOT:

- "flexible" who is more easy to unstack and rewards around once a week

- "bonded" with the staking locked until the end of a period (up to 28 days)

If i have understood correctly, in the first case, it's a sort of fake staking done by Kraken as an intermediary. And in the second case it use the real staking mechanism of the asset.

So did kraken stop both way of staking in the US, or only the "flexible" one whe he is an intermediary ?

miniwark··on Getty Images Is Suing Stable Diffusion for a Staggering $1.8T
* In 2008 they lose against Alain Ernoult, a french photographer, in a french court for €1 million

https://kaptur.co/getty-images-fined-1-million-euros/

* In 2013 they lose against Daniel Morel in a US court for $1.2 millions (a french photographer again!)

http://www.epuk.org/news/follow-the-daniel-morel-vs-afp-and-...

* They have win against Carol Highsmith in 2016. But they probably had settled small money out court for deceptive business practice.

https://petapixel.com/2016/11/22/1-billion-getty-images-laws...

In short, if you want to win a lawsuit against Getty, do no put your images in the public domain, and be a french photographer.

miniwark··on Beauvais Cathedral
This sort of post-war concrete church where generally build with the interior in mind. Look at the photographs of the inside, with the stained glass of the previous church.

miniwark··on Ask HN: Why aim for reducing climate change?
The SSP5 Full-based model say: "This world places increasing faith in competitive markets, innovation and participatory societies to produce rapid technological progress". In short, this is believing in a return of the "30 glorious" period with the utopia than a magic technology will solve everything in time.

Then look for the example of Venice, with her sea level problem. Sure a very costly technology seem to have mitigated the high tides (for now). But in the same time, the "competitive market" of very big ferry-boats have replaced the high tides in the work of destroying the city.

For the global sea level, there will be regions who will gain a lot of money with it, like northern Canada and maybe Russia, because, it will be more easy to excavate minerals/petroleum/gaz/etc. and transport them with new and economics sea routes. This will bring a lot of GDP globally, but in the same time, plenty of poor and populous regions will disappear. The lost in GDP will be small because they will go from poor to still poor (or dead).

This... only if the Gulf-Stream did not change his route because of the climate change. This sort of very bad hypothesis is never accounted by this family of economic models.

PS: The subject here is climate change, but the mass extinction of species is far more a problem then climate change because it cannot be reverted... until a few millions years.

miniwark··on The maddening mess of airport codes [video]
And the winner of all look like to be the Sembach Kaserne in Germany of course!

Formerly 'Sembach Air Base' and 'SEmbach AnneX', and it's a military air base, so normally it would not need an IATA code... In fact this nice code seem to have disappear from the official list... to bad :-(

miniwark··on Lost 8th century Japanese medical text by Buddhist monk has been found
Yep it's weird. From the title only, it look like Liu et al. made a discovery, when the main protagonist is in fact Lei Yutian, the descendant of one of the disciples. Thanks must be made to his masters for preserving this recipes during 52 generations.
miniwark··on Lego Is Discontinuing Mindstorms
'Mindstorm' are more suited for over 10 yo children. For younger children the 'Boost' line (17101 set) may be a good choice (there is nothing said about it in the announcement). Also there is plenty of chinese clones of the previous generations of Mindstorm (and maybe the reason for the discontinuation).
miniwark··on Two hundred years ago, Jean-François Champollion deciphers the Rosetta Stone
Let's not forget his big brother Jacques-Joseph, who was one of his first educators, have worked with him, and who have edited his manuscripts after his death (his egyptian dictionary & grammar). Without Jacques-Joseph, Jean-François may not have been the same man.

miniwark··on Someday aliens will land and all will be fine until we explain our calendar
Because it's about a books who explain than at last, two people can come back from death... days after it. Historians have doubts about this (and other weird events from this books) and therefore do not keep this specifics book as very credible sources. That said, no real historian actually doubt of the historical existence of the famous religious leader from the past.
miniwark··on Someday aliens will land and all will be fine until we explain our calendar
The Ethiopian calendar still do this, 12 months of 30 days each and a last 5 to 6 "month".

The reddit thread is funny but it also forget than there is not only one calendar in the actual world... Long time ago, i have meet an indian who was never able to explain to me witch days he was forbidden to eat meat (he was not a strict vegetarian), or even food at all. It was probably a mix of one of the indian calendars, horoscope and religion.

miniwark··on Show HN: Ubähnchen – Animated subway map of Berlin
The problem with Berlin is than there are many operators for public transport by train:

* U-Bahn, for the subways (underground & aerial)

* S-Bahn, for sub-urban lines (mostly aerial)

* Traway in est-Berlin

A map, live or not need at least to combine the U-Bahn and the S-Bahn, (and if possible the tramway too), because you generally need to use both networks (with the same ticket) to travel. Staying in only one of the network is just not practical.

miniwark··on The Calvine UFO photograph
I only see an small island with reflection on a Scottish lake or a large river a foggy day... And the "plane" is just a floating tree branch for me...
miniwark··on Post-Apocalyptic Programming
The first releases of CollapseOS where developed in Z80 assembler, because Z80 is one of the more common CPU used worldwide (in 80's computers, Ti calculators, game consoles, printers, music synthesisers and many more). It's only recently than it was rewritten in Forth. The author explain it here http://collapseos.org/forth.html This history is nice to read.

In the same family of OS in Forth with low tech devices, there is also KnightOS: https://knightos.org/
