mililani··on The tech boom in Seattle is bringing in droves of successful, insufferable guys
This is exactly why I hated living in the SF Bay Area. We've all heard the jokes: Man Jose and Man Francisco. This article just reminded me of the terrible time I had trying to meet a nice gal there for nearly a decade. Although, to be fair, I've read the census and it seems that the entire West Coast is afflicted by this problem of more single men than women, whereas the East Coast has the opposite problem.

Anyways, to offer an opposing point of view, I found girls like the author equally unpalatable and boring. Sorry, it works both ways.

mililani··on Secrets, lies and Snowden's email: why I was forced to shut down Lavabit
I'm surprised this isn't getting more traction on Hacker News. It's blowing up on r/technology. Pretty surprising to see the mum reaction here. I was hoping to get some more insight into the legal aspects of what happened here. Also, the U.S. is devolving into a tyranny. Sadly, Plato surmised that all democracies eventually devolve into tyrannies. Seems to be coming true.
mililani··on ‘Alien’ creator H.R. Giger is dead
Wow. For some reason, I thought he was dead a long time ago. RIP
mililani··on The Day I Started Lying to Ruth
At least he went fast from the time of diagnosis. If I get cancer, that's how I want to go: in a few months time from diagnosis. I don't want to spend several years being tortured with anxiety and fear and pain.
mililani··on The Hypocrisy Of Sam Yagan and OkCupid
Finally, someone who understands the true meaning of hypocrisy. Pretense is a large part of hypocrisy. People often misunderstand that by saying someone who does something opposite of their beliefs is a hypocrite. No, it's both that and pretense. And, Sam Yagan seems like the proverbial hypocrite.
mililani··on The secrets of the world's happiest cities
I hate these sort of ratings. Different strokes for different folks. Personally, I would be really happy living in a desert if there were a lot of attractive women who happen to be attracted to me. But, hey, that's just me. I couldn't care less for things like transportation infrastructure, etc...
mililani··on Show HN: Fresh-baked rustic sourdough bread, delivered within 20 minutes
I could see this being economical with quad copter (drone) delivery. But, home delivery from a car? Man, the gas expenses (among other car related expenses) would eat the profits to a bare minimum. Especially driving around SF.
mililani··on About that time Google spied on my Gmail
Before more people come in to defend Google, ive known for quite awhile that theyve been snooping their own employees emails. Before gmail went live nearly 10 years ago, there were beta accounts one could get. The only way you could get one was via invitation, and people were willing to pay money for those invites. This one girl i knew who worked at google decided to sell her invites to people. She was selling them to friends. Some how google found out about this. It was against company policy for people to be selling these invites. But, they found out she was and fired her. Thr rumor was they somehow pieced the info back to her. But unless the forced a confession out of these people, we surmised it was because she was sending all of these invitees paypal links for payment. She even told us later thats the only way they could have k own she was selling invites to gmail. So, yeah, not surprised by this at all.

Personally, i use my own smtp server to do all of my mail. It is not completely secure since the nsa can see everything, but its better than trusting google or hotmail.

mililani··on Notes on Discrete Mathematics [pdf]
This is a very good course to take as an intro to advanced mathematics. There is also usually an Intro to Adv Math in most undergrad programs. I've taken both at the same time, and they have lots of overlap. I've found both to be TREMENDOUSLY helpful in approaching proof laden courses like analysis and abstract algebra. It really helped me understand things I had problems with in linear algebra--which I dropped out of because I didn't take discrete or intro to adv math.

Highly recommend anyone interested in higher maths to take this class.

mililani··on Childhood amnesia kicks in around age 7
Yes, most definitely introspective. In fact, I used to think about life and death all the time as a kid. And, it would get me depressed thinking that my mom would someday be dead, and that I would be dead too. I realized at a very young age that if I had the decision to be born, I would haven't have been. Even till this day, I often think I would rather not have been born. But, before anyone intervenes, I'm not suicidal. Just not into the whole circle of life thing.
mililani··on Childhood amnesia kicks in around age 7
I was older. I distinctly remember struggling with English when we first moved to Hawaii. I could NOT talk to the other kids. I also remember my older cousins catching on much more quickly than me. I think I finally grasped English when I was about 4, when I started going to kindergarten.

I believe you. One of our friends has a kid who is, I think, really smart. He's only a toddler (2 y.o.), but he is really talkative and has a good vocabulary. He could start talking before 2. I wouldn't be surprised if he has some recall of his toddler years. I will have to keep abreast of this as time goes by.

mililani··on Childhood amnesia kicks in around age 7
Fair enough. However, I believe my circumstances are starkly different. My parents are native Koreans, and they couldn't speak English worth a damn until I was much older. I really can't see how they could convey these stories to me at such a young age when I couldn't even understand them most of the time.
mililani··on Childhood amnesia kicks in around age 7
I have distinct memories of when I was 2-3 y.o. that have astounded my parents. I was raised in Korea till I was about 3, then we all flew to Hawaii to immigrate to the U.S. I remember the flight, I remember my life in Korea, I remember going to the public spa's with my dad, I remember feeling ashamed of my nudity in front of many older folks around me. I told all of this to my parents later in life, and they were amazed. I even distinctly remember the time when I thought I was lost, being scared, walking through a tunnel only to emerge to find a statue of some Korean soldiers. My parents found me and took a picture of me pointing at that statue. I asked my mom about that time, and I said, "How did I get lost? I was scared." My mom said that they were following me from afar, making sure I didn't see them, and they wanted to see how I would explore the world.

I've told people about this many times. And, people just can't or won't believe me. A history professor told me that this is impossible, because children can't remember anything before the age of 3. He was adamant about it, and completely dismissive of my claims. I think these kinds of pseudo-scientific research (you know, taking polls and applying statistics) should be taken with a grain of salt. One should NOT draw definitive conclusions from them.

mililani··on Ask HN: How much money is enough?
Sorry for the late response. No, the 700k didn't. However, our house isn't worth much. We live in a rural part of Canada, and our house here was just under $70k. It's a pretty nice house too. You can even find cheaper houses, if you're willing to compromise a bit. It's not that far from Kelowna, which is a nicer area but over priced. In the States, I've lived in California (SF Bay Area) and Hawaii. Those places are WAY expensive. I would probably end up moving to a cheaper part of the country with cheaper housing. But, the health insurance thing would really worry me. Health care in the U.S. is dauntingly expensive. I know that private HMO insurance for people over 55 y.o. is over $10k a year, and that goes higher as one ages. Canada is why my wife and I are able to retire pretty young.
mililani··on Ask HN: How much money is enough?
I actually retired at age 40 with less than 700k. My wife and I own a house. We both moved back to Canada, so we don't worry about health care costs. And, we really don't spend money on much. I figured our food/living costs comes out to $1000 a month. We don't have kids or any other big expenses. We're pretty frugal too. Anyways, it all depends. Some will tell you 7 million. That's fucking absurd. If that was true, hardly ANYONE in the US would be able to retire. Others will probably tell you 5 million, which I still find absurd. Anyways, regardless of what people on here will say, you already sound like someone who is indecisive. I've noticed that people who are always searching for their answers from others will never be satisfied by them.
mililani··on From carpool to deadpool: Ridejoy’s startup journey
I actually had the opposite experience. Every time I needed a rideshare on CL, I couldn't find one. Or, when I offered a rideshare, I got no responses. And when I did get a response, it was from someone who didn't read my post and realized it was WAY past due. Perhaps it's because I live in a smaller metro area. I don't know. But, I did often commute up to the Bay Area, and I did often commute to L.A.

I think rideshares are just generally a bad idea anyways. After some thought, I think the idea of sitting with a stranger for several hours, trying to make conversation, would get tiresome in the end.

mililani··on How Sleep Clears the Brain
I wonder how this works for people who have stayed up for multiple days at a time. I know of people who have underwent sleep deprivation studies for over several days. The current record, I think, is 2 weeks. Personally, I have stayed up 3 nights in a row once to study for a chemistry exam. I've had great mental clarity and focus during the entire time. Yes, it was harder to do than fully rested. But, I have often found that I do better under pressure anyways.

By the way, I also ended up getting the highest score on the exam and in the class. It was a brutal chemistry course. Only two of us got A's, and the other guy got an A-.

mililani··on Judge Approves Interchange Fee Settlement with Visa, MasterCard
No ways. Unless you want to have a hard time getting a place to rent or get a mortgage, you WILL need to have credit. I learned that the hard way when I cancelled all my credit cards two years ago and have had no debt or loans since. I just used debit cards for everything. And now, I'm almost a millionaire having a hard time finding a place to rent because my credit is not the greatest anymore.

I can't get the game to run. It just sits on "Downloading Data" forever, even after it has downloaded the Dropbox data. What gives?
mililani··on World of Mathematics
I'm thinking of switching majors. I'm currently pursuing a masters in occupational therapy, but after a semester, I'm realizing it is just not for me. I did my undergrad in math and chemistry, and I've always regretted not doing at least a masters degree in math. Anyways, anyone else here a math guy? I've been out of math for almost 15 years. I'm kind of scared about going to grad school for math.
mililani··on ‘Record IQ is just another talent’ (2010)
Are you talking about physical fitness? Or, reproductive fitness? Based on what you're saying, it seems that "fitness" you're referring to is different than what I'm guessing.
mililani··on Bitcoin Crashing
The biggest problem with Bitcoin is the lack of liquidity, and this is why we're always going to see massive price fluctuations with this currency. And, until the liquidity problem is fixed, no way in hell is this going to ever be close to the reserve currency. Who wants to own an asset which prices may fall precipitously if you decide to sell all of your holdings at once?
mililani··on My Coffee Setup
It's really not that bad. I spend probably 15 minutes a week to roast a lb of coffee. Just get a small, stainless steel pot (I use a 1 qt KitchenAid) with a thick even heat base. Then, warm up the pan for 3 minutes, add coffee beans, and continuously stir with a metal whisk or wooden spoon. There are videos online of how to do this.

The biggest sunk cost, though, is practicing it. It takes some time to get this down. And, you may lose some $ in the process of learning. But, if you're really into coffee, I think it's worth it.

mililani··on My Coffee Setup
Yeah, for sure. Actually, you're supposed to let most freshly roasted beans to sit for a couple of days before grinding to allow off gassing. But, what I meant was, if you WANT the freshly roasted possible beans, this is the way to go. It's cheap, you can control the rest time before grinding, and it's fun and easy to do.
mililani··on My Coffee Setup
$18/lb??? What a rip off. If anyone is wanting to get into great coffee without spending an arm and a leg, please look into roasting your own coffee beans. There is a place called Sweet Maria's in Oakland that can ship it to you; however, I often find shipping kills the deal. I found a really cool local roaster that is willing to sell me any of their green beans for $7/lb. After roasting, you lose some weight so that it comes out closer to $8/lb. And, it's really fresh. The freshest anyone can get.
mililani··on Things San Franciscans Should Be Thankful For
I want to see the list things San Franciscans should NOT be thankful for. Let me think of some things:

1) crazy high rents

2) lots of homeless people

3) urine smell every where

4) horrible parking and traffic

5) foggy cold summers -- maybe a plus in your book

mililani··on Started a stupid company. Failed.
Hey man, sorry to hear. I really hope things work out for you. I really do. But, even if things go south for a long time, I sort of envy you. At least you've tried. I haven't done shit. I keep wanting to try. At least I can say at the end of my life, "You know what? I wasn't a success, but I followed my dreams and passions."

But, I still hope your situation will be better several years from now.
