mikerathbun··on Ex Police Officer Used Law Enforcement Tech to Hack Women’s Explicit Photos
Why put all that time and energy to get naked photos of women just to extort them not for money or sex, but for more photos? Is the Internet running out of porn? This seems like a high risk low reward crime.
mikerathbun··on Software engineers paying 75K to get 3 inches taller
There are many cultures that view just being a woman no matter how attractive or successful as unequal.
mikerathbun··on Dick the Birthday Boy: The Legacy Continues [video]
Yep. I was telling my wife a few weeks ago that the RLM guys have really satisfied a social need I have had for the past few years. I don't know what it is about them.
mikerathbun··on Spotify to acquire Heardle
That was a lot of fun. Thanks!
mikerathbun··on Superb Linux Documentation
I really like documentation sites like this. But viewing this on an iPad Pro with Safari makes it impossible once you select a page such as Syscalls then command write. The menu bar with synopsis, description, etc, covers up about a third of the left side of the screen and there aren't enough context clues to get anything out. Is there a way after selecting a page and then a topic that I can hide the sliding menu window?

I do like what you have.

mikerathbun··on Artist releases album called “Ok Google Play Music” on Spotify
Out of curiosity, is the proper clap speed the same as their song from their commercials? If so I feel like I could nail that cadence every time.
mikerathbun··on Nikola’s founder steps down from board as company faces fraud allegations
Only on TV. People in casinos can be sticklers when you verbally announce one action and then tack on another. Imagine saying something like, "I call" look for a reaction and if that person looks dejected quickly follow Up with, "and raise you $x". It is sometimes referred to as "Angle shooting"
mikerathbun··on The Day AppGet Died
My experience while interviewing with MS is somewhat similar with respect to not hearing back after each stage. The initial phone interview was quick with what seemed like a lower level HR person who asked basic questions from a list with many mispronunciations of MS SQL technologies. I didn't hear anything for three weeks so I called them and they said, "Oh yeah. We want to schedule another phoner with the product team". A few days later I interviewed with for about an hour with two engineers and it was more inline with what I had expected. This time I sent an email the next day thanking them hoping that would at least keep me in the back of their minds. Same thing. About three weeks later I called to find out my status. "Oh yeah. We would like to fly you to Virginia for an in person interview this week". They set up my flight and hotel and I went through three interviews with different groups and left thinking, "Well that was horrible and embarrassing. They are way above anyone I had ever worked with". Same thing. Sent an email thanking them along with my expenses. About six weeks later I needed to know my status since funds were getting low. I called them up and was told I wasn't ready to work for them. But I should add them on LinkedIn to keep in touch. My self esteem was pretty shot, but I ended up with a pretty sweet job that week. I still get emails from them every once in a while when a position opens up, but three years later I still get a little anxious when those emails hit.

So yeah, their post interview stage communication seems to be the weakest part of a process I am sure I was one of hundreds going through at that time.

mikerathbun··on The Graphing Calculator Story (2004)
I love reading this story. Whenever it pops up on HN or Reddit it's such a motivational read. Sometimes people involved will jump in the comment section to add details which helps document the lore of one of the best early computing stories.
mikerathbun··on Tesla Was Kicked Off Fatal Crash Probe by NTSB
I get frustrated when Tesla blames the driver for these crashes by saying that they aren't touching the wheel or are ignoring messages. It is extremely common for my car to warn me to keep my hands on the when WHILE I have my hands on the wheel. Even shaking it a little will sometimes not cancel out the warnings. It doesn't seem to matter if my hands are on the top or bottom of the wheel. Anything short of a deathgrip and constant jiggling of the wheel doesn't seem to consistantly register as keeping your hands on the wheel. Anyone who has used Autopilot for a significant amount of time has been beeped at for not having their hands on the wheel even though they are. And yes, the car will make crazy maneuvers at times that no driver in their right mind would make. I still like it and am glad I opted for it, but it is far from earning its namesake.
mikerathbun··on Show HN: My embarrassing personal website from the 90s
At first I was cringing, but then felt nostalgic for the days before Facebook and other social gathering sites homogenized people's Internet presence.

mikerathbun··on Ask HN: Your development environment on Windows 10?
I have used Vagrant for a few years and never had an issue. All of my source code is shared/synced on the system drive. I use Go, Python, and lots of Javascript frameworks which are all installed and compiled in Vagrant. It's really nice not having all of the frameworks and compilers installed on my work environment. If I need to run a web server or DB I will either apt-get install it in the current Vagrant VM or create a second VM and configure ports in the Vagrantfile to make sure they can talk. I recently started to use Docker to run those services so my Vagrant environment is quickly just becoming the area where I run the tools associated with code compiling.
mikerathbun··on Tesla ‘on Autopilot’ slams into parked fire truck on freeway
Same here. There is rarely a day that I don't have to disengage because of a car moving into my lane a little too close and Autopilot doesn't see it. It's great in bumper to bumper traffic, but at highway speed there are too many blindspots.
mikerathbun··on What's Wrong with Students?
My son is graduating this year from the #5 ranked public High School in a top 10 population sized city in the US. In his four years he has never had to write a research paper or read a class assigned book. When he fails a test he is allowed to correct the errors and receive a 70% for the final test grade. His AP Computer Science class was mostly playing games and learning to create websites in HTML.

I went through the same school district in the early 1990s and had a vastly different experience and did well in college. He is absolutely not prepared for college but the kid is a master at taking state standardized tests.

I wish I had taken a more active role with his education instead of just assuming his school was getting him ready. My advice to moms and dads who have kids getting ready for High School is to participate and monitor what they are learning and find a way to fill in any gaps.

mikerathbun··on Samsung DeX
I really like the idea of only having a phone and being able to have a desktop experience without a separate machine. I am pretty invested product and physiologically wise in the Apple ecosystem and would love to see them go in this direction. They already have development workflows that make it relatively easy to modify the layout and functionality of apps for phones up to large iPad Pros and this could be seen as just another form factor which needs to be accounted for.
mikerathbun··on USS McCain collision ultimately caused by UI confusion
I would be interested to see how much liberty the contractors who develop these systems are given. Are they given a rigid spec by the Navy and expected to implement it exactly or are they given a general proposal which allows them to iterate on UI from lessons learned from previous accidents caused by confusion.
mikerathbun··on Rod Vagg's statement on the request to be removed from the Node.js CTC
The Node community seems to have more issues like this than others. This feels similar to the Nodevember drama where Douglas Crockford was uninvited to speak because a small group of people felt uncomfortable. What that community needs to understand is that speaking takes a lot of work and guts to do. Professionals are busy people and it’s a privilege to hear experts present. Same goes for contributing time and expertise to open source projects. If it becomes common to force people out for perceived wrong think than all that will be left are codes of conducts instead of codes of systems.
mikerathbun··on Oni: An IDE powered by Neovim
I don’t see how this would be better than just Neovim with a few plugins. I switched from Vim to Neovim and love it. Highly configurable and rock solid for everything I have asked it to do. Although I miss things like a live Markdown editor with preview like what you see in VS Code, but that is a small price to pay for ultimate control over your editor.
mikerathbun··on Laverna – A Markdown note-taking app focused on privacy
Looks really nice, but I need my notes app to run on Windows for work. That’s one reason I use Evernote. It is so close for me, but falls short with note creation.
mikerathbun··on Laverna – A Markdown note-taking app focused on privacy
I am constantly looking for a good notes app. I have been a paying Evernote user for years and I really like it. The only problem is the formatting. I take a lot of pride in formatting my notes and like it to look a certain way depending on the content. Markdown is definitely the way I want to go which Evernote has promised in the past but still hasn't delivered. That said note of the buttons on Laverna seem to work on my Mac. Can't sign into DropBox and can't create a notebook. Oh well.

mikerathbun··on Apple receives permit in California to test self-driving cars
So far all the articles I have seen are about Apple experimenting with autonomous technology and most people assume that they are also building an electric vehicle. Those are two very different and challenging projects. I have been an Apple user since 2000 and a Tesla driver for four months and I don't see the current Apple being able to pull off an entire new car platform like that. This isn't a "one more thing" kind of reveal. Look at how long it took Tesla to get to the point where they can mass produce a relatively inexpensive electric vehicle with a basic self driving platform. I am a huge fan of both companies and have stained teeth from all of the Kool Aid, but just getting the battery manufacturing in place seems like an impossible feat for a company that is going to take over two years to design and release a new modular desktop computer for content creators.
