mikejarema··on How we had our Nectar Points stolen, and this is how yours will be too
Giftcards are not cash either!

Unless there is an obvious incentive to purchase a giftcard -- critically for a store/vendor which you already have near-term plans to spend money at -- then avoid them. Eg. I recently purchased one which had an effective 20% savings due to some holiday promotion and will be done spending the balance some time next week. Even then I barely decided to do so.

I don't know how we got conned into trading our money for giftcard balances at par.

Hopefully! But until then we do have the C64 version to enjoy: https://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=1216
mikejarema··on Nokia launches DIY repairable budget Android phone
Thank you for sharing, I'll give it a try

mikejarema··on Nokia launches DIY repairable budget Android phone
Why doesn't Nokia allow me to preorder or sign up to be notified when the device is released/available in my market?

A search for g22 on nokia.com yields zero (!!) results. https://www.nokia.com/search/global/en/G22

I'll be shopping for a new phone soon and am interested in this model. But wow, they've missed a huge opportunity to capture that interest and let me know when I can buy!

mikejarema··on Rovio delists original Angry Birds from PlayStore because it's still too popular
The announcement says it'll be renamed to "Red's First Flight" and be re-listed "pending further review".

I wonder if this is simply a rebranding so that the original no longer appears for "Angry Birds" searches in the app store. Namely that subsequent versions make more $ per install, and having the original at a low price point is cannibalizing sales of the newer more profitable titles.

mikejarema··on Apple Rankings
"The definitive list of good and bad apples."

Definitive, eh? Qualifiers like this are amusing, as they're generally self-proclaimed.

However, having a domain like applerankings.com, as well as a comprehensive, in-depth and entertaining library of apple reviews, definitely helps make the case.

What other heuristics have you seen out there that help make a self-proclaimed "definitive source" become an indisputable one?

Edit: looks like the site came online last year with that same claim, so time is not in their corner.

mikejarema··on Crypto crash deepens, stocks slip
I think the amount of fees per block is what's "insane" here.

Going back a day shows that the fees were on the order of ~3 eth per block (https://etherscan.io/blocks?p=300) whereas now they're averaging around ~20eth per block.

In other words ETH holders are very motivated to move their tokens right now, and the amount they're paying to do so reflects this.

mikejarema··on Launch HN: PingPong (YC W21) – Video messaging for remote teams
Helpful (http://helpful.com) was working on this as well but got acquired (or maybe acquihired?) by Shopify. I'm not sure how much traction they got or if the product was just before its time. I suspect there are a bunch of lessons to learn from their efforts.
mikejarema··on Retiring Tucows Downloads
Union Square Ventures invested in them a few years back, and blogged about their rationale and some info on where Tucows is/has been headed as a business:

mikejarema··on File_id.biz – A Mysterious Web CLI?
I tried some commands in [0] and common words in [1]. All return "Bad command or file name."

I did find that `ver` returns "FILE-ID.BIZ for the World Wide Web Version 1.2, (C) 2020" (default message).

And that commands are case-sensitive and white-space sensitive.

I'd be curious to see if anyone digs up anything else in the future. For now, I'm done with this little diversion.

mikejarema··on File_id.biz – A Mysterious Web CLI?
I stumbled upon this site when taking a trip down memory lane. Recalling the FILE_ID.DIZ file format[0] from my BBS days, I typed in the closest matching URL (file-id.biz) and found this curious interface.

I've only found one command so far after a bit of exploring: help → "I am not what I am."

mikejarema··on Simple Analytics hits $4k MRR and shares its numbers
I noticed the TM used in the title: "Open Startup™". I wasn't sure if TM was used in jest here or whether there was actually an organization behind it holding the exclusive right to use the term.

Anyone know? Is there an "authoritative" source for open startups -- a list, practices, etc etc?

The closest I could find was:

- a TM, "100 OPEN STARTUPS", held by a Brazilian company [https://trademark.trademarkia.com/100-open-startups-87085663...] edit: they have active US and EU trademarks on the term

- Baremetrics' list of open startups, did they pioneer this approach? [https://baremetrics.com/open-startups] edit: openstartups.com redirects here

- A seemingly independent list [https://open-startups.xyz/]

It'd be ironic for the term "open startup" to be locked up behind a TM and a "governing body", so I'm inclined to think it's not. However, the use of the TM here got me wondering.

mikejarema··on Cold-Water Swimming
I haven't been able to minimize the shock too much, but I've seen a little success fully entering and exiting the water repeatedly, staying in a little longer each time. Eg. 5 secs, 15 secs, then 30 secs. After 3 or 4 in and outs, I just stay in and get on with the swim.

This gives me a chance to gauge what I'm dealing with (water temp + how willful and resilient I'm feeling that day). Plus it makes the initial entry less of a mental hurdle because I know I'm coming out shortly after entering.

mikejarema··on Cold-Water Swimming
I regularly do cold water swims in spring and fall months, and wholeheartedly agree with the amazing feeling after a good 10-20 minute dip.

I find the first few minutes of the swim are the hardest, as your body is adjusting to the cold, surface blood vessels are constricting, etc. The next 5-15 minutes are fantastic! I don't usually push it much beyond that.

But any discussion of the benefits of cold water swimming also needs to highlight the risk. If you're thinking of trying it out, make sure you're acutely aware of the temperatures you're dealing with, how long you're planning on being in the water, and that you understand the body's reflexes to cold water submersion. Here's a good resource covering these points: http://seagrant.umn.edu/coastal_communities/hypothermia

mikejarema··on Immediate brain plasticity after one hour of brain–computer interface
Thanks. I'm Canada-based so it seems the issue is related to geo-restrictions.

Hopefully between the two links, everyone who wants to check this doc out is covered.

mikejarema··on Immediate brain plasticity after one hour of brain–computer interface
I'm interested in watching this, but the video seems to have been taken down: "Video unavailable This video contains content from Octapixx, who has blocked it in your country on copyright grounds."

Is this the same documentary? https://www.dynamicbrain.ca/the-nature-of-things.html

mikejarema··on 2 in 5 Canadians quit their jobs because of bad bosses
The research linked from the linked article: https://www.roberthalf.ca/en/two-in-five-workers-in-canada-h...

According to that page, the data is drawn from an online survey of 400 office workers aged 18 and older.

mikejarema··on We Let Machine Learning Design Logos
Thanks -- it was just an interesting diversion with a trickle of traffic over the years, no ML under the hood (or anywhere close to it for that matter). I wish you and your team the best with your product, I especially would love to see custom drawn icons courtesy of your AI!
mikejarema··on We Let Machine Learning Design Logos
"a feedback loop where you can explore things that are adjacent to something you like" - I dabbled with this idea for a bit a few years back and ended up with logocaster.com as an early demo of the idea (desktop only). If you see a logo you like you can lock in the color scheme, font/font category and (basic) style.

I wish I had the time to get some icons in there and a better UI, but it's tough to compete with the awesome free logo generators out there, so I put it on hold.

mikejarema··on Who can I hire to hack me?
A somewhat related and interesting read is Jameson Lopp's [1] efforts to make himself vanish: https://www.nytimes.com/2019/03/12/technology/how-to-disappe...

His goal was to make himself relatively anonymous in the real world and scrub his (actual) personal info from public/for-sale databases. And while he didn't hire anyone to pentest his digital identity, he did hire a PI to try and find him.

To make sure he didn’t make any mistakes, Mr. Lopp paid private investigators to try to find him. It was an investigator who helped him figure out that his D.M.V. registration was making him vulnerable, which led him to getting a decoy address.

mikejarema··on World′s tallest elevator tower rises in Rottweil, Germany (2015)
Official site for the tower: https://testturm.thyssenkrupp-elevator.com/en/

Has some decent shots that show what it looks like finished, when viewed from Rottweil, and the conference rooms (!) contained within.

mikejarema··on Show HN: Namegine – find a name for your startup or product
Thanks for the reply, likewise.

And to echo another question in the comments, how is the name pronounced exactly? On reading it, it seems "gine" is likely pronounced "jin" or "gin" as in "engine".

mikejarema··on Show HN: Namegine – find a name for your startup or product
Congrats on the launch.

I run Namevine.com and have for 6+ years. It does much of the same thing.

Did you not consider naming clashes/confusion yourselves when creating the product?

mikejarema··on Apple is rebuilding Maps from the ground up
I like that line, is it yours or does it have some further history/examples behind it?
mikejarema··on Dapps
> Are their any services that provide usage figures for any of these Dapps?

The closest I've seen to this, eg. an Alexa.com/AppAnnie for Dapps, is https://dappradar.com.

It measures DAUs, transaction counts and daily/weekly tx value (in ETH) across many Ethereum smart contracts. It's not perfect but does provide a decent standardized view of some Dapp usage/traction.

mikejarema··on Show HN: URL Canary – Get an alert when someone finds your secrets
The bit.ly approach might result in false positives as the namespace for bit.ly links is quite easy to iterate over (assuming you don't use a custom link).

Also, doesn't bit.ly access a URL to pull a title or generate a preview? This would send a click through to the canary as well.

mikejarema··on Show HN: Tet – A todo app that deletes your tasks at the end of the day
I could see how it could be beneficial for some types of tasks in that:

- you avoid clutter, tasks like "fix the squeaking door" which would otherwise stay at the bottom of your list forever are purged

- it forces you to prioritize tasks

- at the start of each day it forces you to consciously plan what you really need done, which is something one may want to be doing anyways to be more deliberate about what you spend your time on

That said, I would probably only use this for non-critical personal stuff rather than in place of trello or tracker.

mikejarema··on Show HN: Breach Insider – Detect a data breach using realistic pseudo-users
A quick Google didn't yield much for "canary passwords", but it sounds like monitoring for passwords as opposed to user email/details as described in the OP.

Care to shed a bit more light on what you mean here and how to effectively use them?

mikejarema··on Can the new Firefox Quantum regain its web browser market share?
This threw me off, I really didn't expect Mozilla to bundle in something like this.

However, here's the info, straight from the source: https://blog.mozilla.org/press-uk/2017/10/06/testing-cliqz-i...

Looks like < 1% of installs in Germany will get this preinstalled. Here's how to remove if you're one of the unlucky ones: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/cliqz-recommendations-f...

Finally, Cliqz has a Firefox Test Pilot program (German-only): https://testpilot.firefox.com/experiments/cliqz
