mikecoles··on Car dealers say they can't sell EVs, tell Biden to slow their rollout
Stretch your kegs and hydrate? You either travel with kids or are 90+ years old.

Battery levels, not hydration or bladder levels, are the limiting factor of EV trips.

mikecoles··on Substack Has a Nazi Problem
Sounds like a stance the Nazis would have taken.

mikecoles··on Should cars have built-in speed limits? Some think it's time
Might as well throttle everyone's CPU to 1GHz as well.
mikecoles··on Ask HN: Does anyone else struggle to work within limitations?
Nope. The 'correct' tool for the job. When simple formatting is needed, Markdown works fine. It's even better when someone else has to fix or update your work in the future. Why not take out that pesky mosquito with a MOAB? Same reasoning works for other tools.

mikecoles··on Ask HN: How have you engineered the shit out of your home's front entrance?
Engineering implies working within constraints. Most people in this realm only have to deal with the spouse acceptance factor as a limiter.

Went from openhab -> homeassistant -> Node-RED. Then sprinkle in MySensors, Frigate, and Double-Take, but not on just the entrance, go for the perimeter then defense in depth.

mikecoles··on Welcome to Sealand, the smallest state – 60 Minutes [video]
Solar power and Starlink makes this a not unreasonable possibility.

It looks like they transformed from a hosting provider to a novelty royalty title business.

mikecoles··on US govt pays AT&T to let cops search Americans' phone records without warrant
Unlikely. That poster is well into the deranged zone.
mikecoles··on Three chips in and Google Tensor is on life support
'Toys' that work for the intended function makes them tools. Why blow money on hardware and power when a Coral will do the job well?
mikecoles··on Is it legal to mix cash in a jar? How is Bitcoin mixing any different?
Wrong. Mixing money can be done for non-criminal reasons. In your gloved example, you're doing it to commit crime.
mikecoles··on Why did base64 win against uuencode?
I thought the ASCII upper-case <-> lower-case being a bit operation as being clever.
mikecoles··on Show HN: Call or Text 16043326625 to Chat with an AI Customer Service Agent
Some light research if anyone else looks up information before calling random phone numbers. Fraud risk is noted as high, but the reason is not specified.

mikecoles··on IBM suspends ads on X after they appeared next to Nazi posts
Not sure how that's relevant. Who is buying from IBM? they should be advertising on MySpace. This is just an easy out for IBM.
mikecoles··on How do tech folks feel about their children choosing the same career path?
Horribly bad idea to work in tech. Anyone can do this work. The market is flooded.

Encourage kids to pick up "blue collar" jobs where most others are scared of getting their hands dirty. Less competition for jobs and the pay is great. The work is also rewarding on its own.

mikecoles··on Tesla faces strong oposition from unions in Sweden
The only 'right' the workers should have to get a different job if they don't like the terms of their current one.

Their branding already has a long history with this association.
mikecoles··on What If Money Expired?
My money is already expiring quicker than ever thanks to the intentional inflation.
mikecoles··on Ask HN: What do you use to replace incandescent lights?
Skip the middle-man markup and go to the source. Amazon adds no value, only cost.

https://www.aliexpress.us/w/wholesale-incandescent-e27.html?...

Or Alibaba if you want even cheaper prices at the expense of some research time.

mikecoles··on Gitlab Offers a New Add-On

Covid led to more online shopping. Looting and theft is leading to more online shopping.

Following the money, who gains by more online shopping and less competition from local stores?

mikecoles··on Ask HN: Which 5 websites have you used and would you like to see them back?
Google reader, Google Knol, Google Wave, Google+

nerdperfect and securityfocus.com/bid for independent sites.

update: found a new, to me, website: failory . https://www.failory.com/google/knol

mikecoles··on Ask HN: Hackers on Keto diet, what do you eat in lieu of carbs to assume fibers?
Have you found that you need fiber? When I'd done keto, it was nearly all eggs and burger with some occasional chicken breast.
